How to chip from Bermuda grass

With the wrong technique, Bermuda grass is almost impossible to play out of. I’m sure you’ll know what it’s like to play shots around the green where the club constantly feels like it’s getting stuck in the grass!
To play short game shots from Bermuda, we need to understand how to adapt our technique. To help you with this, I cover the 3 main lies from the rough, a short sided shot and a fairway lie with green to work with.

Its a common grass in Mississippi. At least 90% of the courses have Bermuda from tee to greens. Can also hurt your feelings when the grain is heavy on the greens.

Green side rough in Portugal absolutely destroyed me last year. Quinto Do Lago especially. I'm not a confident short game player back home so had no chance over there lol

You couldn't have timed this better Dan as I'm down in South Africa at the moment and have been really struggling trying to play release 1.The other thing I find is you have to be super aggressive with every shot because 99% of the time come up well short. Many Thanks.

Very helpful for people like me that don't play on Bermuda unless they take a golf holiday somewhere warm and are suddenly confronted with Bermuda. It's weird that grass can grow sideways. I've done it all: the instant stop, and even completely fluffing it going fully under and through on a lie that was on top of a thick airy patch.

I really needed this ty. I'm playing Monte Rei in a few weeks. Last time I played on Bermuda grass was Dubai and my iron shots and chipping from the rough was horrendous

Dormant Winter Bermuda rough gives me fits when the turf is patchy and soil is hard/muddy underneath.

Very helpful here in Texas. Perhaps you could go over hard pan shots and high shot off of hard pan.

Hardpan allows you to "Spin the Ball" so "lots of Height" is unnecessary. All you need is 12 inches above Anything between you and the Green to guarantee clearing the obstacle.

I can't wait for the next video! I never thought of the types of grass that are out there in the world. I guess I have the same type of grass in Brittany, France as you have in the UK. Certainly not a Bermuda gras. Which one is it, I wonder? 🧐

If that tight lie is into the grain, "use your normal shot" is not good advice. I know you are the expert, but still. BTW I just bought your book and really like the straightforward method. The #2 release has already tremendously improved my short game. Back to the original point, I'd love to see a video on chipping into the grain on bermuda. The only things that work for me are raising the heel off the ground, or using a putter or hybrid.

Hi Dan, great info as always thank you. Just wondering what your grip pressure is like in the thick stuff? Do you grip tighter than you would on a tight lie?

Yes. I grip the club slightly tighter in my left hand (as a right handed golfer) to help stop the face turning over when the ball is deeper in the rough

Dan, when you release, it almost means braking with the arms/shoulders and letting the wrist break and come around? Right? I have trouble with trying to move the grip into the belt buckle or hip.

Dan, It looks to me that playing on Bermuda all the time is going to influence your short game technique and players who are used to it are going to have problems evolving a short game for bent grass and also the other way round. I can see that happening with players who play the Asian tour and rock up in Europe and the other way round. The snag you get on Bermuda grass has to be factored in and will get in you on a sub conscious level if you play it a lot and it is going to be difficult to adjust to when playing on bent grass and the techniques are different also.

Dan do you think it is possible to get the same kind of tight accuracy and consistency chipping from Bermuda grass as you can from bent grass? I have always found it much more difficult getting up and down from Bermuda and made hitting the green more important. Watching this video although you played the chips well you were not getting them as close as you do when demonstrating on your home course. What do the stats say about this question?

Yes much tougher as you can’t get the same control, will always be a bit of a mystery how they come out.

@@DanGrieveGolf That is what I found when playing in Thailand, the shot that caused me the most problems was the short side chip where I would hit it long to a back pin having very little green to work with and in most cases chipping into a downslope on a short shot shot.. I could be no more than 12 to 15 feet away from the pin and I would not get up and down., grain on the green also made it much more complex it was not just the rough.

I get your point Dan, but when you demonstrate that release 1 isn't gonna work from the back foot, at least don't stab 2 inches behind the ball... I guess you would get a decent result from that lie with that shot...

You might make the green yes, but if lots of grass behind the ball it will always grab

On the tight lies bouncing it off the face takes time to get the distance right but key is listen to the sound

Pretty sure he was with the grain on the tight lie shot, which is super easy and what he said is sufficient. Into the grain Bermuda is completely different animal and he did not even touch that topic.

I think he was into based on the divot but clipped it off nice. 8i is the play. Into the grain Bermuda on a tight lie is tricky. Especially to a close pin. Way to easy to grab and just move the ball a foot. Crazy.

That’s how you play it, bump and run hitting ball first. Grain is irrelevant when you can hit ball first. You just can’t do it when ball’s sat down in Bermuda because you can’t avoid the grass behind it even if your low point is perfect.
