I picked up a 10' 8" Hardy Ultralight LL 3wt today. Got a Hardy Ultradisc 5000 5/6wt reel too. Just need the Euro lines and leaders. I'm totally inspired by your Euro nymphing videos. Can't wait to get out and try this form of fly fishing soon.

A good, informative video Joe. I fish in Spain, where I live, and this style of fishing is almost the only style fished, certainly in competitions. I use a 10’6” #2 and a 10’ #4 for streamer fishing, which pretty much echos your advice. Semi automatic reels are very popular in Europe - to pick up the spare line when you are playing a fish. The style is not difficult to fish, but extremely rewarding!

Thanks for the video. One comment that I'll make about choosing your fly line is whether it is a braid or mono core. Each will have pros and cons, and should be considered. I believe that the first Rio line in this video is a braid core, while the Rio 'technical euro' line is a mono core. I prefer the braid core, which has lower stretch, works better in cold weather, and can be used when attaching a euro nymphing leader with a needle nail knot.

I have the winston boron super ten in a 3 wt with a tilt reel. I absolutely love it. My sage 4 wt sonic is collecting dust. Would love to see a review of the super ten from you. BTW, thanks for all you do and all the info you provide. Also, I am a big fan of the dirty dozen nymph flies from you guys. Always spot on for me out here in Colorado.

Hey Joe, Awesome video. What ate your thoughts on uplocking reel seats on euro rods like the syndicate for example? Any advice on how the balance/feel comes into play with the reel being an inch higher on the blank than as opposed to a downlocker?

I want to get set up with a versatile rig to try out euro nymphing. I'm on a 10'6" 3wt rod and planning to get the Rio Shorty to attach to a floating fly line so that I can switch over to dropper hopper, etc. In this video you recommend a 4wt line for this purpose but in a previous video you recommend a 3wt floating line. I really don’t like loop to loop connections. The only time I utilize loop connections is when steelhead fishing . I think it’s because in the late 60’s on up to the late 80’s loops were never heard of . It’s just me but knots are one of the basics of fly fishing . An old flyfisher made a comment once “ if you don’t want to learn to tie the proper knots … you’ll never be a serious fly fisher “ so will nipping off the loop hinder line performance of euro fishing ?

Hey joe. Starting the idea of building my own leaders. Using a 10 ft 3wt Clearwater. I noticed I had to many knots going through my guides. Would you recommend a long piece of maxima to fix this ? Or a 3 ft piece with 3 feet of sighted? Will the fly line get blown easier in the wind than a longer piece of maxima?

I’m confused, why would I want a 5 weight reel if Im Setting up a 3 weight system? I was thinking of getting a Tilt with a moonshine Vesper 10.6 rod length.

love your videos and direction provided. congrats on your success. question, i've had good luck with a mono rig for my euro nymph setup. like 20' of 20# then like 8 of 15# and 4 of 12#, sighter, tippet. so really just the 15 and 12 come out the tiptop. it casts pretty well, good feel, not a lot of sag. but i really like that new RIo technical euro line with the integrated leader. you think thats thicker/heavier than the 20# maxima cham. ? i think the leader portion of that rio system is 14' and is .013 whic his about the same diameter as the 12# maxima. just curious how they will be different? thoughts?
