With four nail gauge sizes to choose from, one size does not fit all carpentry and woodworking applications. Need to know how to pick the right finish nailer? Watch as This Old House Pro2Pro editor Chris Ermides showcases the differences between the types of finish nailers as part of This Old House: Live-[bit.ly/2WYiIgp] an initiative providing daily programming and opportunities to connect with our experts during these challenging times.

When it comes to installing trim around windows, doors, baseboards, crown molding, assembling cabinet parts or installing stair treads and risers, as you can see, one nail gun does not fit all. Each of these nailers covers a range of applications. In some cases there’s overlap, but more often than not-you’re not going to get the results you want by using one when the other is the better option.
The difference between them is the gauge nail that they shoot. The most common and readily available types are 15 gauge, 16 gauge, 18 gauge, and 23 gauge. The higher the number, the thinner the nail and the smaller the hole.
So, do you need them all, and which one should you choose if you can only buy one?

I've been a huge fan of TOH since the 80s watching it with my dad "over the air".... fast forward to 2020 and this is the content i want to see in 2020. Still love everything else you're doing, but THIS resonates with me as i'm tackling some new projects in my house.

The audio is awful. Why is the speech audio so muffled and only on the left side?

All of my nail and staple guns are air-operated because I like the continued power air provides. I have one 16 gauge 18 volt nailer by Ryobi and it's all I need. The air 15 gauge is my go-to for me because it's between the 18 Guage and the framing nailer.

When explaining the nail sizes for the 16G I swear I hear you say that the nails range from "three and a quarter" to two and a half inches, I'm guessing you meant one and a quarter?

Music in stereo, voice on the left only. Otherwise, good content. I think I need an 18 gage gun for bead board on a cottage ceiling, and air to be light. Thanks!

Heck an 18 gauge will. I used them on the baseboards I work on. No you don't have to pepper the hell out of them either,

The 16 G will definitely hold it, the 18 G can as well, just shoot the nail in at a slight angle.

18 gauge less likely to split wood near the end. Or pre-drill. 23 gauge is too tiny except for thin molding, etc.
