These videos feel like they have a weird disconnect in that Dr. Jubal is plainly mythological in how successful he was at all stages of his career. I was lucky enough to be able to choose between schools but after multiple cycles and I certainly wasn't choosing between Harvard and NYU

Hey there, something that I felt was also important in choosing a medical school was their curriculum. I applied to ~82 or so, and ultimately the curriculum was one of the biggest make-or-break factors. Having a true P/F vs a graded/ranked system was a huge load off my shoulders, plus I imagine it has a pretty significant impact on the culture at the school itself. Systems-based vs normal-abnormal also had a massive impact on my workflow. I can't say how much this would change with the upcoming changes to Step 1, but I would personally take the P/F school regardless. Great video!

Might be best in your case to look for med schools with the same theme, i.e. rural underserved areas, poor urban populations, etc. Then tailor your app to focus on that mission. Sure you can always apply to schools that don't fit the mission, but you'll have better chances at getting into the ones that seem like a fitted glove to your tailored app.

I think a video on Medicare for all would be interesting. How it would effect doctor pay, what specialties would benefit, how it could help patients, etc
@alphaspartan
@alphaspartan 3 жыл бұрын
Medicare reimbursement is low AF compared to insurance company reimbursement. Doc pay would go down big time as a result of MFA. Patients would have long wait times to see their doctor, and even longer wait times to see a specialist (see any country, like the UK, that has free healthcare and they will confirm this) and lawyers will decide if you deserve life saving treatment, because you won't be paying for it, the public will. I.e. old people who need a liver transplant? Nah, too expensive a procedure for such an old person, a waste of money, let them die. Now sure, if you're wealthy in the UK, you can purchase private healthcare and get USA quality treatment, but because of MFA, taxes there are very high and becoming wealthy is that much harder, as a lot of your income is being taken away as taxes to the gov't. Having said all of that, I imagine USA will eventually get MFA because the people love 'free stuff' and the politicians love being elected, 'free stuff' is a win-win for both parties to achieve their goals. If you're going to medical school anytime soon, I would heavily consider the high cost of attendance (i.e. loan debt upwards of $400,000 for 4 years med school + interest from 3+ year residency) that will likely be impossible to pay off if MFA passes and docs get salaries slashed to $90,000-100,000 due to gov't taking over the healthcare system. In countries like the UK, this is possible because school is basically free, but for the few 100,000 medical students who get caught between the transition to MFA that owe $400,000 in loans but don't get paid like docs did before MFA, they will probably be stuck paying 10% of their income for 20 years to get the federal loan forgiveness option, which will be one hell of a bummer if you ask me, because that's like having an extra mortgage payment for half your adult life that could have been spent on vacations, starting a family, owning a nice home, etc. Not really worth the sacrifices you undertook in undergrad, med school, residency and as an attending to end up living your life that way... Although med school will likely become far less competitive as all the people wanting to do it for the money will go seeking more lucrative professions that take less of a sacrifice at that point. - Dr. J.

@alphaspartan
@alphaspartan 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm and people in those countries pay higher taxes and get worse service, sometimes waiting months for medical services unless they buy health insurance to use a nice private hospital. 😅 Have you talked to someone from Canada/Switzerland, or are you just repeating the Tiktok video you saw from some politician trying to get votes? Because I've heard from people who know what they're talking about and they hated public healthcare. Have you never seen the nasty teeth of people from the UK? Turns out dental care isn't covered by free health insurance either lol 😆 I'm sure the struggling middle class families would be happy to give up even more of their paycheck to pay for the poor to have free health insurance. Actually though, real world example, look at California with it's high taxes and social welfare programs. Then look at Florida with it's low taxes and lack of free stuff. Very similar climates. Which state is growing in population and which is losing population?

Yeah, adding to prev comments, I know plenty of residents that come from all over the place (Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, Washington, Cali, etc). Location doesn’t play as large of a factor as school prestige, publications, LoRs, and academics. I would say Step1 score is powerful, but it’s going to become pass/fail, which just emphasizes the importance of the previous factors more.

Be an anesthesiologist with a KZfaq channel that sedates/kidnaps psychiatrists to your real estate properties. You’d only release the psychiatrists when your vids get enough likes. The money you’d make would go into investing in other properties around the country. Subs can visit and talk to psychiatrists. Would make for great content.

Question, I plan on applying to both DO & MD, but my beliefs align more with DO. If I get accepted into both DO & MD, what are some things that can help me choose? Everyone I know is telling me I should pick MD if I get into both. I know there was a "stigma" about DO, and it still exists, but not nearly as much. I want to make sure to get a good residency but I am afraid from what I have heard that DO won't secure my residency as much as MD would? Any advice would be SO appreciated. Thank you!!!
@rayanrahmani9838
@rayanrahmani9838 3 жыл бұрын
What specialty are you interested in? If you’re interested in more competitive fields such as derm, surgery, etc., you should really be leaning more towards MD. If you truly want to go into primary care, then you have to really think about it. Personally, I’d err on the side of safety by going MD, as most people change their intended specialty. You don’t want to all of a sudden want to go into neurosurgery and then have to fight an uphill battle because of the DO degree

I’d do MD if you get accepted. MD-DO Residency merger will be in effect, meaning that MDs will now be able to fill in some of the 1200 slots that were originally reserved just for DOs. While DO application will be more streamlined, it’s going to be more competitive- and if you still aren’t sure what specialty you want than MD will put you in a better position. Your values/beliefs don’t have to change with the type of school either. You do you playa

Not everyone wants to go into a "competitive" specialty. If you look at the residents bios in whatever specialty you want to go into, it's not like they all come from top 10 schools. Sometimes I really like the vids on this channel and some other times they are soooo off. Kevin is trying to sell you things so for baby premeds that are feeling anxiety, med school is med school. The name is not everything. You got this. Being a high achiever does not mean you will be a good doctor. Just because a person receives a full scholarship to med school doesn't mean they will be a practicing physician in the future.

If I’m interested in dermatology, would you say going to a school with a strong department and more prestige would merit an extra 200k in debt versus a school without those things.

DAMN, Here in morocco you can only apply to one med school depending on where you live and you get in straight from high school, we don't pay a penny (at least for public med schools) Fun fact : 3rd year is the first clinical year, and students get paid 10$ a month !!!!!!! (Salary increases each year tho)

It is similar to Brazil, but we have to take a test and if we get a really good score, we are in. We can only apply to 2 though

Don’t stress too much. Just focus in the moment. If you are in 8th grade and want to choose medicine as your future career, you should start now. Do well in your class, get good sat/act score, attend a good college, get good gpa in college, ace the mcat, and do well on the interview.

Nice - yeah so the short answer is: after high school you got undergrad for 4 years, med school for 4 years, then residency for 3-7yrs (depends on specialty), then a fellowship (1-2yrs). At the end of it you’d be a doctor flying solo. There will be a ton of standardized exams, and having a strict schedule is important during med school. It’s important to find healthy ways to relieve stress because it’s a long road. Longer answer is this: Think of all the schooling like generally the same thing, but the material you learn slowly gets more and more specific. In high school everyone generally takes the same classes and you figure out what you like/excel at. You take a standardized exam SAT/ACT and go to college. You can study anything you want in college (math/history/biochem/art, whatever u like) but you need to do certain basic science classes required by medical school (some chemistry, biology, physics, and a psych class). Towards the end of undergrad you take a standardized exam called the MCAT, and then put together an application for med school. Once in medical school everyone will generally take the same core classes the first couple years, and then you get to do clinical rotations with different specialties to figure out what you like. During med school you also take a few standardized exams called USMLE (there’s 3 different exams, each called a “step”, each tests a different thing, they are spread across med school). Towards the end of med school you pick a specialty you’d like to pursue, put together an application, and interview with different residency programs. You put down your favorite programs ranked, and if the program also liked you, then you “MATCH” into the program. In residency, you are a doctor, but are basically learning the ropes of what it means to work as a physician in the real world. You work a lot of hours and learn a lot of things hands on from doctors that are very experienced, basically you live at the hospital (that’s why they are called a resident). You can then do a fellowship after that with something even more specific (if you did neurosurgery residency, maybe your fellowship is skull base surgery or spine). After that you’d be on your own, you pick up a job as a doc at some hospital (you’d be what is called an attending) and have a bit more of a routine. But the exam fun never stops, and every ~10years you need to take your “boards”, essentially a test made by some docs in your specialty to make sure that you are still a competent physician.

@@blossom1294 Based on my research you can check when to start with the uni website. For your next question if you're planning to study in lets say Canada you first need to go to college and major in whatever field you're passionate about but also complete the required prequisite the med school needs then I think in your year you need to sit for your MCAT and start applying . However other unis don't require MCAT, like I think Mcmaster. In the US it's almost the same thing but all unis require MCAT. I hope this helps.

@@blossom1294 In China (and I think most Asian countries) you start applying right after highschool. I'm not sure tho

Short answer: No. if you are really smart you can try to get into a linkage/guaranteed acceptance. I believe there are some 6 or 7yr combined programs with DO schools that mush undergrad with med, but those competitive. Outside the US they do things differently, but I’m assuming u in US if you mention high school
