In today's DIY Electric Skateboard Build Tutorial, we dive into ESK8 Motors. Learn how to choose a motor for your DIY Electric Skateboard build. Today we go over what the numbers mean, how to size a motor, what KV ratings are, and more information on brushless motors. At the end of this video you should be able to choose between belt driven and hub motors, and be able to decide what size is best for you.
PARTS MENTIONED IN VIDEO:

What Motor set up would you pick? Why? We’d love to hear 😎

I think you glossed over one important thing... dual motor vs single motor braking. Dual motor is going to bring you to a stop quicker which if you are going faster than 20mph is vital imo. It also provides a failsafe if one belt snaps under hard acceleration/braking. I still have my hub motors from my meepo board but I am looking at a direct drive system in the far future. They are new and expensive so I'm not surprised you didn't include them in this video. Plus you don't sell them 😜 I already knew all this information but wanted to see how you explained it plus your videos are relaxing. Great job!

Thanks for the comment! You are absolutely right, definitely should have mentioned the failsafe of having a 2nd belt just in case. Also should have mentioned the faster stopping power of a 2nd motor. Didn’t mention direct drive because they honestly deserve their own video all together. Just too few options out there along with the higher price point. Thanks for watching!

Very helpful video thanks for the info. I appreciate the replaceable wheel skin, for a downhill or freeride skater the wheel can be much smaller after a day of skating. If a race on a motorized skateboard is anything like downhill you could have some sick burnout drift races. Also some induro aspects to long distance races. Regenerative braking for charging the battery? Very interesting prospects.

Thanks for the showcase in motors. I'm curious if you have thought of the magnet length inside the motors? There are long motors which aren't intended for skateboard use but people shoehorn them in for powerful braking and regen. ie. Instead of 6355 its 63 and the length is 80 really weird but it works with wide trucks

Apreciate this video so much Mike! Just as many of your other videos, you do so well on making it simple and easily understandable. I just have one doubt. I am making an e-mountainboard, considering lower kv makes for better torque, will a 140kv 6374 motor, 8 inch wheels with an Mboards 10s 3p give me good hill climbing performance?

Will a single 270kv motor go up a decent hill?
@ratheonhudson3311
@ratheonhudson3311 5 жыл бұрын
You also need to consider contact patch. If you use a single powerful motor and you're slipping backwards you should back off the accelerator. 270kv is good for hil climbs and it's strong enough to work alone. I hill climb a lot and I use Large-Hub direct drive motors for torque and range.

Hey man this is a great video... I am a mechanical engineering student trying to make my own board. However I am not that great at eletrical stuff and I would like to know how to get the appropriate battery (and which type) for the motor we have chosen. I know there's big differences between lithium ion, lipo batteries but considering i want range and speed as well how do I chose what kind of battery and how many of them (lithium ion) would I need to be able to get enough power out of them to get to specific speeds. I knew my question is weird I just hope you understand it. Great video btw from a scientific point of view it helps a lot when you want to get a lot more technical.

Really appreciate the video. This was exactly what I was looking for. I have a Lacroix Jaws 2.0 with stock 6389 190 kv motors but need new motors and trying to figure out which way to go. Currently belt driven but planning to put on the Boardnamics M1-AT Gear Drive. When you say 2 types of motors; Belt and hub motors. The belt motors include the gear drives and not only the belt drives, yes? Any idea which motors would be equivalent to my currents as far as speed, torque, range, price, sound? And which would you recommend if I wanted to go to the next step up motor? I'm currently looking at the Flipsky 6384 190kv motors. Thank you!

Very interesting. My board has hub , 3000 watt total,35 kph 25 k range, and goes up 25 percent hill. I would like more speed and keep the hill climbing. Looking around at options it seems to be a case of gain on one and pay with another. On the sound side of things, I just love my Razor longboard. It may only be 120-watt gear drive but that sweet turbine-like scream, the best. My 3000 watt total is a Black Hawk Electric Pro series V3.

So i was wondering if you think it even possible when its that short and also made of plastic? And if yes would the Hub or Belt be better? I do want to add that its only for asphalt driving, want to be able to go uphill but dont have to go super fast up 😆 also can i buy which ever battery, controller etc or if I need to make sure its compatible what should I look for? Nice video man! 😎 Hub motors are great but they are not for everyone! I literally ruined mines in two weeks! I ride a lot on sidewalks and the gradings make the urethane come loose after a while. They also get noisy if you ride on wet surfaces as they rust out, they get too hot and lag sometimes at low speed. Belt drive is just the best! Beside broken belt and cost, (noise isn't a big deal), it kills hub motors. More torque, more speed (handles better 12S), freedom on other parts such as gear ratio, wheels (types and sizes), ability to configure the VESC (you decide how strong the brake is, how powerful the board is, etc ). For the motor choice (for belt drive), it depends on: * the battery you want to use: 6s - 10s (190KV and above >), 10s - 12s (190KV and below
