Welcome to LivingPianos.com, I'm Robert Estrin. Today, we're going to discuss how to choose a piano. Different people are going to have markedly different criteria for choosing a piano. For example, if you're an accomplished, seasoned concert pianist, you have very specific ideas of what you're looking for, and you'll want to try countless pianos to find exactly the touch and the tone that you're after. But if you're like most people, you haven't had the opportunity to play a plethora of concert-level instruments, you might want to have a trusted person who knows a lot about pianos to help guide the process. I'm going to try to give you some pointers as to what to look for when you are after a piano.

My Mom bought a Baby Grand at 65 years if age and started playing the piano. And she played at least another 20 years. I bought a Yamaha Digital at 65 years and started playing the piano.

Wow, you really replicate Argerich's "machine gun" repeated notes in the Scarlatti. Amazing skills!

Great video, sensei! You are a great influence and you are a big reason I made the plunge for my Mason and Hamlin AA from 1919! The tech came today to start bringing it back to life. Thanks for all the great advice!

At 3:00, Scarlatti's Sonata in Dm. The old saying applies: "You get what you pay for." Of course in my case I will probably never be able to afford a high quality, hand made, grand. So it will probably be a digital piano for me. I have an Arturia Keylab 88, but it has died on me. I am really liking the Yamaha P525 that has recently come out.

In my area( northern Delaware, very close to Philadelphia), Craigslist has seen a lot of good, cheap or free pianos. Free 1996/Baldwin Hamilton, $1000. Knabe grand( I forget the age), free 25 year old Yamaha baby grand, free Chickering baby grand, free Yamaha U2. Many people have pianos that they or their family no longer plays, don’t have space for them, they just want them gone. Find a local piano technician and they will help you choose. Also my local University music school has an annual instrument sale at reduced prices, most just a year old,but be cautious as they may have been played hard in that year.

I have a fabulous Chickering studio piano, deep voiced, made just before the Chickering closed their factory but prior to them leading their name. I have tried to sell this gorgeous piano for two years. Ill health has become seriously ill health, and I am no longer able to play or teach. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you for your essential and entertaining YT channel! Deborah

Hi Robert, do you have thoughts on the (digital) piano-playing becoming more important in music production with sampling?

Things have progressed beyond digital sampling with physical modeling which adds the expressive element to electronic pianos.

Did you say that Baldwin is no longer made?

He is talking about Baldwins that are made in USA. Today's Baldwin's are made in China, not the same instruments at all.

In the early 2000s, Baldwin was bought by Gibson the guitar builder. A few years later, they shuttered the American factory and started importing Chinese pianos from various companies and stenciling on the Baldwin name. There are some aspects of these Asian production pianos that pay homage to Baldwin, however, they are completely different scale designs that have nothing to do with the American Baldwin pianos from past years with the possible exception of the Hamilton Studio piano.

Yes, you need to try out many pianos to get the feel and hear the sound. This is why I wouldn't buy a piano from an online store located far away.

Anyone with vast experience with fine pianos would absolutely have to try out the instruments the way some of our customers do visiting our store. We offer transportation to and from the airport and help with accommodations as well.

I totally agree with your comments with some of my own. IMHO digital pianos, notably Casio and Kawai, have advanced to the point that I wouldn't consider a cheap upright in 2023. I was fortunate because my NYC piano teacher's son was a Steinway tech who knew of an M. I'm only the 2nd owner of my 1929 instrument.

Useful advice for inexperienced customers. A strange thing happened. My last post got rewritten, with inferior grammar, so I deleted it.

Para mi, si tengo que elegir un piano para comprar, es que tenga un sonido ORIGINAL. Y no el más caro necesariamente.

It's simple. Just pick the biggest Steinway you can afford.

About five+ years ago, I purchased a Yamaha YPG-535 sensitive touch electric piano keyboard to learn new music without stressing my hands. I recently acquired a Baldwin-Hamilton Studio Console from Living Pianos to relearn playing an acoustic! I didn't have the option of traveling to Cleveland to test drive pianos and trusted Robert to choose a piano for me. I'm overwhelmed by the gorgeous sound this 1992 Baldwin-Hamilton has! It's in excellent condition and very clean inside! I couldn't be happier and am working to become a better pianist. ✨🎶🎹✨🤍✨

A Baldwin Hamilton like this was the practice instrument our father, Morton Estrin, bought for us when I was 12 years old - and we loved it!
