I'm a digital artist and the process of traditional painting always amazes me... In digital it's the exact opposite of what you do traditionally, in digital pieces we typically fill the sketches with flat bold colors and then go over it with undertones on a seperate layer on a clipping mask as shading. I personally like to set the shading layer as something super bold and saturated and just lower the opacity so it blends into the flat colors quite well

Well you can do that in watercolor as well, it's called glazing. The effect is somewhat different though.

I have no idea how to do digital art and digital artist just amaze me, like how can you remember all of those functions and buttons and how do you layer a colour cover the other. If you wanted to layer red and blue how would you do it?

I actually do digital art a lot like watercolor. I start with a colored value layer, like an underpainting, and then I color in washes similar to watercolor. Something it took me a while to learn is that there is no one correct way to do digital art. There are lots of online tutorials giving similar wisdom (lineart, then flats, then rendering), but you should do what works best for you. Digital art has tools to mimic many different traditional art processes, and in the end, no one process is the correct one. Personally, I recommend learning both traditional and digital and letting them cross-pollinate.

The underpainting could also help with blending in everything better so the colors don't fight with each other that much, and if you want something to pop out of the painting, to catch the eye, you will do a different underpainting to it than the rest of the painting which indicates that it is a separate thing from the rest, something that maybe shouldn't belong there, but it is there.

I think the reason why the red and green are more dark and gloomy and more fit for like "post apocalyptic" scenes is because the fact that green and red don't mix well. In watercolor they may produce a brownish hue and in subtractive light it produces black.

As a kid I remember always trying to avoid making a puddle of watery paint because it was annoying to wait for long for the paint to dry when you wanted to paint. I guess I should be talking about watercolor instead, but anyway, shouldn't probably have tried to avoid it, those puddles seem to be doing just fine.

Dumb question, but how long should the underpainting process be before it could be considered overworking? I usually underpaint to make sure items of the same color like a cluster of grapes have hue shifts to distinguish their shapes and make them easier to see. I am a very tight painter, I am not good with loose painting or expressive style and I know that can be a bad thing I need to work on. I am just curious because making said hue shifts to separate forms can take-up a good portion of the entire creation process time and I am not sure when enough is enough and it can go into overworking.
@dannydrwing
@dannydrwing 11 ай бұрын
Well, usually underpainting is a pretty quick/single layer. It’s all about layering, but it’s a balance. Speaking as someone that often overworks as well, better to stop at 80% than go 102% with watercolor paper 😂
