Choosing the correct size of cable is absolutely critical to ensuring the safety and compliance of our electrical installations. But it's not as simple as just picking the right one off the shelf, even if you've taken all the correct steps up to this point there's still a chance you'll get it wrong.
Having performed all the necessary calculations in the previous videos it's finally time to select the correct cable size. Make sure you select the right cable, from the right table, using the right installation method to get your cable size right and prevent potential disasters.
Take a dive with Joe into the exciting world of electrical design in this series of videos that will help you if you're just starting out in this area at college or work. Even if you've been an electrician for years, there's something for everyone in this series of videos.

I could utterly wring the neck of our builders that put in 10mm for a shower (that goes unused by everyone who simply changes the mixer tap in the tub) but for some reason put 4mm out to my garage. You know, where everyone wants to put a car charger.

Wow, this is worrying electricians needing to do CPD to work this out - is this not basic stuff covered during formal training? How many are out there that are sticking fingers in the air 😮

We've got people watching from every stage of the electrician's journey, some apprentices who'll benefit from this at college, right up to the spark who's been doing it for years and not fully understanding it. 😂

Most industrial/commercial jobs we do have the cable size specified by the consultant so no calcs required onsite. I personally verify whats specified, for peace of mind and so i don't loose the skill. Most of my colleges, approved electricians, would struggle understanding this video!!

@@johnaphone and this is what's worrying! I guess then having repeat training on basics is what's needed - I wouldn't consider it CPD however!

@@tonywatson1412 I used to be a factory spark back in the late 80's early 90's I'm fascinated by all these gadgets that have appeared over the years to make people's lives easier and their day more productive But the actual hard work and maths that you need to do in order to do a good job is not shown and everything thinks we spend all day in perfect conditions playing with expensive toys and billing huge figures for running a few wires The other day I spent 3 hours running a lighting circuit for 3 time and a hallway in a loft, a job that would have taken me 20/30 minutes as a first fix but took 3 hours as my mate, whos house it was, wanted me to explain every single connection and how it linked to the next light/switch/room Anyway, it was hot and itchy and I didn't need to get that way

Nooo please don’t do these kinds of videos. Your videos go all over the world and every place has different codes and regulations and rules that govern different awg wire sizes I don’t wanna go to a house because some kid blew himself up because he didn’t size the cable properly. Orr make my job even more of a headache because I couldn’t find some other dumb thing he did in the house. I studied this and worked a lot of years in this trade. This was irresponsible to post I’m gonna have to unsubscribe because of this. 😢

Trust me if they follow the British standard for cable sizing nothing will blow up / burnd down because the standard is extremely cautious, at the full load rating the correctly sized cable would not even get warm. That being said people should still only undertake work to the local codes/regulations, and be qualified/competent to do so .
