Before going out on your first trip with your new stove it may be a good idea to fire up the stove at home to burn off the oil on the metal. This avoids smelling up your tent with oil fumes. Happy camping

These are the Kni-co wood stoves we talked about. I have 2 Trekker stoves & the Alaskan Stove. These are actually made in Wallowa, Oregon.

Strongly agree with upsize if in doubt... I run the full size Alaskan in a 9’x11.5’ Snowtrekker and it is a perfect fit from +5 to -30. You can always dampen a big stove down to get less heat and a longer burn but it’s very labour intensive to run a small stove wide open just to stay warm and you won’t be sleeping much if you have to fill it every couple hours.

if i use the alaskan in a size smaller snow trekker then your tent i should still be good you think

@@crownroy4946 You shouldn’t need the full size Alaskan in something like an 8x10 short wall, I’m not positive but I also think the smaller Snowtrekker tents come with a smaller stove jack so you would do well to call Snowtrekker to discuss options... they are 110% out to make you happy and super easy to talk to.

I remember watching this three years ago when I was deciding which stove to buy for my bell tent. I went with the Packer and it's still going strong! Finally caved and bought the hot water tank so I'm excited to give that a try. Highly recommend these stoves! Not flashy by any means but they're well made and very durable.

Thanks for the video Tim... I was definitely unsure of size when I purchased mine. I might have gone too big, but a friend suggested going larger simply for the benefit of having a larger cooking surface. You didn't mention anything about the spark arrestor - I think that's an extra accessory that can be purchased as well...? Anyway, did my first burn today... definitely glad I did that before heading out on trip.

Hi Dave - Unless you have a specific reason for using a spark arrestor (dry conditions in the spring or fall, heavy rain), in the middle of winter, I would forego it's use - they can often create more problems than they solve in terms of airflow, creosote buildup, and keeping the stove properly aerated.

Can't have both lightweight and super longevity. You will eventually have to replace it, but I am pretty confident it will end out being cost effective. I would not like to bring with me on a trip my house wood stove who weights around 400 pounds and is worth around 3000 $. Should be also an interesting solution for my project of an enclosed functional trailer who will also serve as a "'stealth'' camping trailer, no permanent furniture or bed, only cots and easy to remove and store furniture.

totally agree. I bought one took it home. Took it out of the box and immediately put it back in the box and returned it. It's basically just a tin can - sorry just being honest. Wasted the whole afternoon on it.

trekker size on the website is 9*8*17 inches (which I believe it is W*H*L), how come here starts from 16" height?

Good question. Yes - the damper sleeve section is a straight pipe: either 4" to 4", or 5" to 5" depending on stove model. Elbows can go in before or after this section, before the tapered section starts.

Burn chambers are the same, difference is in the legs - Esker's support the use of long staves to support the stove when melt occurs beneath it.

Pym's, I have tried it while winter camping through a friend of mine. He returned the stove. Damper is very cheap, flimsy and difficult to use when the stove is running. The handle is way too short.

New laser cut steel damper replaces old spring dependant cast iron dampers. More reliable, better design.

@@mark82914 My friend has the new stove damper design from Kni-Co. He hates it. Too flimsy and hard to install. He threw it out and bought the old style damper design with the pin.

Would the Alaskan be too much of a stove for a 10x10? I was thinking of getting the larger version over the jr in case I wanted a bigger tent later on and also for the ability to damp it down to have a longer burn?

Agree with everyone else - a bit big is not a bad thing when it comes to stoves - damping down and longer burns totally doable.

I just bought this tundra takedown stove, and on my initial burn, the powder coat came off on several locations. Was that your experience as well 🤔⁉️

Very disappointing to hear. It happened to my friend too. You should have purchased the new stainless steel stove from Boreal Outdoor Innovations. They now make stove sizes similar to Kni-Co's Tundra Takedown and the Denali but ALL in stainless steel. I pre-ordered one stove for my Snowtrekker Mega Crew tent. New stove is 1/8 inch thick stainless steel.....it will never wear out. Merci!

I tried to find one with no luck. Canadian companies manufacturing wood stoves seem only interested in certified home wood and pellets stoves.

If you're in Canada, would opt for either Kni-Co Packer or Alaskan Jr, or Esker Ontario or Huron - better to be a bit big than a bit small when talking stoves in Canadian winter.

Hi Rick - All Kni-Co stoves are for outdoor tent use ONLY. They are NOT designed or made for use inside campers or permanent structures. Inappropriate use can lead to asphyxiation or death - for campers/bunkies/cottages hit up your local wood stove retailer.

Most likely - that's a pretty big tent. Would also depend on what you're burning (hardwood/softwood), but I would opt for a larger stove - having too small of a stove is a recipe for working constantly and not ever getting warm enough to enjoy yourself.
