Figuring out how to choose yarn for knitting seems to be a major problem for many beginners. There are so many choices and sadly most of them just focus on the color. And even there, finding a good yarn color combination can be hard. With this video I want to fill in the gaps and show you everything you need to know about yarn properties. What's the best yarn weight/needle size. Which material should you pick. Because some yarns are very durable, while others are super soft, or show a nice stitch definition. And depending on your project this might mean you need to go for Arcylic, sheep wool, or even cashmere. Spinning is also often an overlooked topic I want to address with this video. The best yarn for knitting a scarf can be a single or 2 ply but for socks, you probably want a sturdy 4-ply or even 8-ply that can withstand a lot of wear and tear.

Great advice, as always!! I gave my sister-in-law a brioche scarf in a wool silk blend because I knew she was willing to hand wash it. But I guess I didn’t give her specific instructions - she showed it to me later and it had lost all its softness and looked stretched out! She still loved it, but I had to figure out what happened. It turns out that she washed it with Tide, which contains an enzyme that destroys animal fibers. She also wrung it out instead of just pressing the water out. Lesson learned, I’ll provide written, detailed care instructions with anything I gift knit! 😊

Back when I could only afford very cheap acrylic yarn, I knit a sweater for my husband out of Red Heart worsted. It wound up more dense than it should have been and was so warm he couldn’t wear it without getting heat exhaustion! I’m exaggerating slightly, but not much. It can only be worn on the coldest days. These days, I make an effort to knit breathable fabrics with non-plastic fibers.

The best choice of yarn I have made was for a shawl. I used a hand-dyed yarn that was shades of blue and green with a bit of purple and picked out one of the blues and one of the greens for the three colours. My husband calls it my seashore shawl as it does look like a beach/sea/rockpool. And my top tips: 1 When you think you have chosen good colours, take a black and white photo of the different skeins together. That will show the contrast. If two look too similar, you won't get enough contrast. This is particularly important if you're planning say a throw with multiple colours. 2 Always buy the best yarn you can afford. Why waste all that effort on a substandard yarn? The only exception I have to that rule is making soft toys. Then I always use acrylic for the washability; but then that's the best yarn for the job anyway.

Before I knew better, I knitted your Into the Wild cowl with a dark gray 100% baby alpaca yarn. It was super soft, but the cables didn’t show up well because of the color and lack of stitch definition. After reading the Knitter’s Book of Yarn, I knit the same cowl again using a white wool yarn. It looked so much better using the lighter colored wool to show off the beautiful cables.

The other two colour tricks are: a monochromatic colour scheme, where you use lighter and darker versions of the same colour; think Crimson, Bright red, hot pink, pastel pink. an analogous colour scheme, where you pick three to five colours that are side by on the colour wheel; like purple, indigo, blue, teal, green.

My biggest mistake was knitting with a wool yarn when I am horribly allergic to wool! Wearing wool sweaters has nearly sent me into anaphylaxis, but I was told "just holding it will be okay," and I'd bought a pretty alpaca yarn from Algawo (for a nice warm scarf for my husband in Canadian winter). I ended up with an awful rash on my hands, then face, and mailed it back to Germany so my mother could make use of it (after her lecture about allergies). You have taught me a lot more about how to substitute different fibres/weights and understand how synthetic or plant-based yarn will look different from wool when finished. Thank you for your advice!

Great video. Picking the right yarn for a project is so important! I learned that the hard way. I made a hat with a loom using a yarn that stretched. I didn't realize until I was done with the project that the hat was way to big! I am now using that yarn to make a blanket since the stretch on a blanket is fine.

Thank you for the heads up on Canva color wheel! I recently knitted a pair of minis advent stripe socks where I put 8 variegated colors together with a solid contrasting color for cuffs, heels, and toes! I knitted it before I saw this podcast, and the result was awesome. I am usually not sure about what color combo, but I just went ahead and arranged the colors and winged it. This is the third pair of stripe socks that I put together myself that I am thrilled with the results. I could not afford the self stripping color wool so I used what I had. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and I appreciate the time and effort you put forth your tutorials/podcasts! Loving learning about yarn and knitting with you!! My first attempt at crochet was with a whispy textured yarn, sure it was soft. But.... it was a horrible experience because it was a poor choice to start out with. 🤯🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤣😂🤣 I should have started with a yarn that allowed even stitch definition to start, that would allow me to practice on my own natural tension. I struggled with stitch gauge for a long time afterward. But, staying true to crafts, it's all learning. Now, I will use roving or yarn with halos without stress. Thank you, Norman!

Lots of useful information in your video. Thanks. I tried using a merino and cotton yarn instead of the recommended wool tweed yarn for a lace cardigan. I realised after I got up to the armholes that it was twisting towards one side, presumably because of the way it's spun. Using it now for a plainer pattern and going much better. Thanks for your videos.

I am planning to knit cushions from Arne & Carlos. They used Rowan, a yak blend. It is rather expensive, and colors are somewhat limited, so I am considering either substitute yarn or saving to buy the suggested yarn. This helps so I will keep looking. I want to make several pillows with the same color way. I think I may buy one skein of the suggested and a close second choice and knit swatches to see how they look. The swatch video mentioned in this video is excellent, as all of your videos are. Thank you so much Norman!!

Thank you so much. Yarn substitution is so challenging…I never understood the difference between woolen or worsted spun, and that makes so much sense!! This will help me so much with finding the right yarn for patterns when the yarn used is unavailable. This has always been so challenging, and now I have some more information to help me out! Thanks for all the great pointers. Currently knitting up a sleeveless summer cardi in a linen, viscose and cotton blend. I picked the yarn called for in the pattern to make it easy on myself. Took a while to get used to the yarn but now I've got a few inches on my needles it's easy. Very tightly spun and it doesn't split which is making it the perfect yarn. Since I've crocheted for ages, I can substitute much easier. Someday I'll try subs in knitting.

Oh yes thank you! finally found that vertical and slanted stockinette stitch! I was so frustrated because I just bought 9 skeins of cotton yarn and when I made the gauge swatch, the stitches were all over the place, like it's slanted and wonky though I'm pretty sure my knitting techniques wasn't that bad. I remember you've mentioned it before about how the yarn plied yarn stuff and you said just pick another yarn, but I really don't want to discard all the stash. So i came up with an idea to soak the yarn in warm water just like how you treated recycled yarn. I just hope it'll be more manageable once they're dried out! Wish me luck!!

@@NimbleNeedles Hahah I considered that too, but tbh i did it anyway out of frustration. They are all hand-dyed cotton so I made the swatches with 3 skeins of yarns and they look so wonky as in each skein slanted to a different directions so they kinda give a zigzag effect in each row. That's why I was so devastated because I've bought a lot for my next project. But thank you, I've read online, some says it'll look better once I blocked and wash the finished product. We'll see about that.

Wow! Who knew?!? Just getting started and I thought the only issues I needed to consider were color and how soft is it! I feel almost paralyzed with fear and anxiety… I think for me getting started I will go with the yarn used by the designer. I can see that over time and with experience I will (hopefully) have a better understanding and will need to refer back here. Thank you for the information!

Perfect timing! Thank you for another fantastic video with lots of comprehensive details. I’ve been reading about this topic all day today with The Knitters Book of Yarn and The Knitters Book of Socks both by Clara Parkes. Love them both so much! Learned about the first book from another one of your videos awhile back. I have been trying to be much more careful with my choices of yarn. I have not had epic fails. However, I did just finish my very “first” sock (still working on the second) and chose to use two different yarns. A contrasting color for the cuff, heel and toe and another for the main color of the sock…before reading your recommendation about sticking with same weight /brand . I learned immediately why this could be important. 😂 I am definitely a novice knitter… both yarns said “sock yarn”. One was a commercial sock yarn and the other was a hand dyed 75 merino 25 nylon blend. It worked out fine enough just the same. Had I read your instructions all the way through before purchasing the yarn 😁 I would have chosen differently. The sock fits perfectly regardless and I love it. I certainly will be more careful in the future. Thanks again, as always. Loved the suggestion about the app for color selection!!

Great video! I found out how much fibre content matters when I chose to substitute a merino yarn that contained nylon with a pure merino yarn. My project was the Eowyn blouse, so a rather simple top knitted with a looser gauge than the yarn calls for. The yarn I chose is super popular so I thought it must be great. What I didn’t know is that pure merino tends to be heavy and it ended up stretching and drooping quite a bit. Also this is a summer top so it felted under the arms. That part doesn’t really matter much to the top, but it makes it impossible to unravel and use the yarn for another project. But what I learned is that super wash yarns and yarns with nylon are great for tops and don’t need to only be used for socks. Also pure merino has it uses, but it’s better to knit it with a tighter gauge and maybe as an outer garment. I think it’s so much that can be learned from using different fibres for different projects and also to knit good swatches. Looking forwards to your next video!

This is a fantsatic video. Great suggestions ! My worst mistake was to choose a cotton varigated yarn for a summer sweater, it was pooling so much !!! very ugly, plus it was quite heavy ! My best match was a mohair hand dyed yarn with a pattern designed for that specific yarn, it was my most pleasurable knit ever, as I was knitting it and as I am wearing it. It was in colors of sunrise, I knitted it in very cloudy Canadian November and it gave me so much joy, I wrote to the designer and to the yarn dyer to express my gratitude. That scarf makes me happy every time I wear it, which is quite often. Love your Bavarian twisted stitch socks !

I was knitting a winter scarf that I did in blue and yellow but got two different yarns by mistake. The color combo was fabulous but while the same brand the different yarns were a disaster. Lesson learned.

I recently needed a merino wool with fingerling yarn weight to match mohair kidsilk so I looked mainly for the color which was for burgundy fingerless gloves 🧤, they didn’t have cascade yarns merino but they did have drops Fabre , I don’t know if you know it ? But it’s mixed with acrylic not my favourite fiber, the cost 💲 was very inexpensive which was appealing to me! Even if the price was right , I bought the Fabre yarn 🧶 because it was the good color and weight but I didn’t consider the fiber content . I didn’t know why it was that much cheaper this brand , I realized after it’s marketed as a cheaper yarn alternative for sock yarn. So for sure after watching your video I will for sure think of fiber content , I usually love cascade yarns they are so nice 👍I don’t hate the Fabre yarn but it has a slight different texture than 100% merino.

Hi Norman, thank you for another of your encyclopedic-yet-summary-of-essentials video! I am very indecisive about the yarn for a future large fingering weight shawl project: go for a (relatively) high twist 4-ply or try out a single ply for once (because of the promise of softness). I guess I'll just have to try out, swatch and block, and then see how it looks and feels...

My first lace project, a shawl no less, + fuzzy yarn = tons of tears 😢. Once I figured out it wasn’t me I felt so much better and was finally able to finish the project!

I wish I watched this channel before I started crocheting last year! (still not got the hang of knitting although I keep trying haha) I knit everything with aran weight or heavier yarns and it means I cant bear to wear my favourite jumpers inside or with a jacket because their far too hot even in the English winter! It's a punishment for my laziness haha

Love this! I would add (cause I'm that bossy LOL) that it's so important for the knitter to realize their own limitations and then adjust expectations accordingly. For example, I really like the Daytripper Cardigan by MJ Mucklestone which I currently have on needles. Now, it calls for light Lopi. Looks great in the photos. Well, I have the world's most sensitive skin. Sorry not sorry that I can't knit with burlap! Plus, the sweater's for my teenage daughter. So I'm using a wool/acrylic/nylon blend. Not itchy so far for my hands, but I can still feel the wool to be sure. The sweater will look much firmer and have more stitch definition. It won't look sweet and lofty. The floats won't felt together. All this is ok; I've adjusted my expectations.

P.S. Was thinking more about Lopi today. So I've visited Iceland, and I too live in the frozen white North. I get why Lopi was/is necessary. It would be fantastic for outerwear worn in windswept, icy, moist, treeless environs. Iceland is nothing if not windy!!

Dearest Norman. I am currently working on a shawl that has stripes of stockinette stitches. Just before beginning my last section, I noticed that I had purled approximately 25 stitches when I should have knitted them - 6 rows down. I nearly cried at the thought of taking out and then attempting to pick up almost 400 stitches. Then I recalled a video of yours that provided instructions to fix this. I am now happily fixing this mistake with no stress thanks to you. I am so incredibly grateful. Thank you so much. 😊
