🌸In today's video I'm going to try and demystify the foundation (and concealer) buying process. This video will cover finding your undertone and skin tone, noting some common foundation shade names for various undertones and doing a little research online to help you narrow your shades before you go into the stores or online to purchase. Part 2 will cover what type of coverage you need, how to swatch in stores, and how to ensure that the shade the consultant is insisting is the perfect shade for you is really your best shade!
🌸Foundations Matching Sites:
www.temptalia.com - great for both foundation matching and also just identifying your undertone/skin tone and and getting some foundation options
www.findation.com - great for foundations are similar shade to those you already own.

When I shop for a foundation I find that the easiest way is just to look at the foundations I already have and just put a good match in my purse and use that for picking out my new foundation. This works well for me. I also keep a compact in my purse with a good match for impulse purchases.

Thank you for this video! I've always had a really difficult time finding the right shade of foundation, and I don't trust the department store assistants with it either because even after getting a more professional opinion I get told that my foundation looks heavy and like I'm wearing a mask. Mortifying.

Good info. I didn’t know you could return open foundation. When I buy $50 foundation I’ll usually go to Sephora or Macys. They will give you a small sample. The last time I went to Sephora and the clerk gave me a sample of NARS that I got three full face applications so I could really decide if I wanted it.

Hi Lisa, thank you for another great video. In Australia you cannot return opened foundations, but you can get a couple of little sample pots to take home and try. I find this particularly useful because I have a cool undertone, but the consultants get it wrong under the store lights and recommend foundations that make me look jaundiced in the daylight.

Good stuff, Lisa. I can’t sleep so…thanks for the early morning video! Another tip for identifying neutral is if they initially burn then tan (even with sunscreen). I look forward to your swatching video. I have been swatched at Ulta and Sephora and still had to return. Store lighting can be deceiving. Then there is the oxidation factor which is my greatest nemesis. I learned to swatch…leave it on for an hour and look at it in natural light before buying. Also ask for a sample.

My dad said we were Heinz 57…a lot of ingredients. Lol. Anyway, I am definitely fair, but can tan after a burn. I no longer lay out in the sun, but used to. I had oily skin as a teen and young woman. This is definitely a needed and helpful video Lisa! As an image consultant I do colour analysis and help ladies find out if they are cool, warm or neutral and always help with makeup matching. It can be such a challenge. I have even gone into store with clients because they were not matched correctly in store. The vein thing is not always accurate and can be hard for some people to see. Also some have a better eye for colours than others. Yes this can be a challenging process but you gave so many great tips. Love your idea of looking at website for colours before shopping in person. xxoo Jackie

You know I actually have a terrible eye for color, it’s really hard for me to see it and so I’ve learned by training my eye. And Photography they would always say will you just need to see the light and I’m like what light, so I became a technical photographer and just learn to pose and where to place my lights based on experience not because I actually could “see the light.” Though I can always see it on my computer screen, I just can’t see it real time

I went to 3 Sephoras and each salesperson recommended shades that were a miss when I stepped out to natural light. The store lighting is horrid! I returned all foundations. When asked , they will never admit if a foundation oxidizes. Sephora wants to make a sale. I will always return if I’m not happy with a product. Another dilemma is that our necks are usually lighter shade than face, so it’s tricky to find a face shade that will naturally blend to neck without creating a mask look.

I figured out all my tones but find even expensive brands oxidize on my face. Most recommendations end up being too light for me. Even though I am fair/light I need a light-medium color in foundation or I look like a full moon. (I don’t like wearing bronzer to darken it cause then I look like I’m spray tanned only on my face.) I have found a couple that work but have to go through it all again in the summer when I’m a bit darker. Sigh. I found my recent trip to Ulta for the first time in 2 years was frustrating. Many of their sample bottles of even newer foundations had separated. I’m not sure how accurate the samples colors really were because of that. They were also out of samples in shades that I needed to try in some of my preferred brands. I also learned that some brands lean toward yellow at least for me, no matter how many shades I try. Ugh. It’s such a chore. I do find tempalia helpful.

Frustrating ain’t it! If they are just a little dark or a little light you can always try just a foundation adjuster or a darker serum type foundation like the NYX foundation drops and use them to get the closer shade. Or if you’re olive undertone you can get a little bit of blue. LA girl makes a blue and white foundation adjuster. They carry that at Ulta.

@@LisaMonique thanks, I did not know about foundation adjusters!! The big problem seemed to be dryness, even the Lancôme Tent Idol! I was so disappointed because everyone raves about it so much. I use a tinted moisturizer, I love Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue, tinted hydrating gel, spf 30…. Have you tried Rimmel Scandaleyes or Wet n Wild 24 hour waterproof? They both are super long lasting. However they are really really soft and so I have to tap them on and blend and let them dry down. I can’t wipe a line because it’s too much product and the line gets too fat. Wunder2 Also works really well for me. And they’re eyeliner is typical consistency. But I can’t rub it off my hand even the next day. All three can be found on Amazon. And my final question is are you sure it is not your mascara? I usually find when I have dark circles under my eyes it’s my mascara not my liner. My other favorite liners are at Sephora, the makeup by Mario precision pro and the Sephora brand 12 hour contour pencil. I prefer liners that need sharpening because they are creamier when first applying and I can blend out better. Then they set down in about 20-30 minutes and don’t budge. I scribble on the back of my hand, and test and see what still on the next day LOL

I return makeup because it’s impossible to get the shades right without trying them in natural light. I don’t feel I should have to cover the cost when I am not given the correct shade.
