I cut the highs when I'm distorting or bit crushing sounds usually. This is because bit crushing or distorting can produce extremely harsh high end frequencies that aren't too friendly to the ear

@@JRent506 a good solution to that is parallel processing, if you sidechain the vocal to a new track and call it distortion or sth you can go crazy with the saturation and Eq the highs out. This way the original vocal is not affected and you still get the effect you want.
