How to clean a brake rotor : brake clean vs hot soapy water!

As we were prepping the Fit for a quick brake pad swap, we noticed the box for the pads instructed us to clean the rotors with hot, soapy water. This was something Matt and I had never heard of. We both always just used brake clean. So, we fired up the camera and here are the results of our little experiment. It was definitely a shock to us!

Well, I accidentally got some of the soap and water on my car and on my skin and it miraculously cleaned those too...and THAT is why this is one of the greatest you tube videos ever made.

soapy water is actually really good on brakes collects all the brake dust cleans everything removes old grease it's just better. as long as you drive your car after so your rotor doesn't rust

I use the power washer and soap at the self-serve car wash every month to blast the road dirt and grease off my motorcycle rotors. Works great. I used to think that I had to take it apart and soak it in some specialised fluid. Turns out dirt is dirt. It doesn't know what you are using. As long as it degreases you are gold.

The soap and water actually brought some Of the shine back to the rotor which maybe the brush helped break some stuff off there as well but the brake parts cleaner just barely cleaned some of the surface grime. I learned a new trick today.

Maybe because they didn't dry off that rotor? Usually when things are wet they're going to look shinier. Still, I think I'll give it a shot on my car mostly because I'm too cheap to buy products I might not need.

Why not do both? Brake cleaner first the soap/water. You have the wheel off already....just go full force cleaning. Brake cleaner may get stuff off which soap/water didn't and vice-versa...
@Mylifeinthepits
@Mylifeinthepits 3 жыл бұрын
You can always do both. Brake cleaner seems to take stuff like oil and grease off better than the soap did.. This was just a comparison test.

And have you ever tried to clean car carpet with dish soap? 1/4 - 1/3 oz soap (3-4 pumps), dilute with water. Quick Prewash carpet to remove crumbs and dirt, then drizzle the solution all over. Use your shoes/boots to scrub evenly. If you’re ok to get your hands dirty then scrub lightly with any flat head brush (up&down, back&forth). Apply concentration to spots you wish to focus and give them couple swirls to dissolve. Leave 30min to 2 hrs, rinse. Garden hoses work just fine for this method.

I guess the less destructive of metal brushes would be the gold brass bristle ones? I need more of those, nylon bristle not as effective. The light surface rust (on the other surfaces besides the actual brake track) is inevitable and just cosmetic eh?
@Mylifeinthepits
@Mylifeinthepits 3 жыл бұрын
I usually go through the nylon one pretty quickly. Most of the time it is just surface rust and isn't bad as long as you take care of it early.
