If you let your K&N Air filter get that dirty, you've already lost any flow benefit from having one in the first place.

It really depends on where you live & drive as to whether these are worth getting / cleaning / risking your turbo in poor air quality. I got one for my VW Golf, and while airflow is higher, (and therefore potentially more particles pass through), the air quality in my city/country is some of the cleanest in the world, so K&N is right for me! I'll check the filter every 3 years or so, perhaps invest in cleaning equipment and do that routine maintenance as a satisying DIY project. $5 per year maintenance is hardly anything worth worrying about.

Using a $5 tooth brush and the cleaning fluid to scrub the filter will remove all the built up crud. Just make sure the tooth brush is rinsed under hot water every 10 seconds of use because otherwise it wont clean your filter for long. They don't bother to tell you about scrubbing the filter at K&N do they! Also you need to tap the filter on a hard surface to remove all the bigger bits of rubbish that get stuck deep in the filter. My K&N is working just fine.

The big thing is making sure it’s 100% dry after rinsing. To be safe I let my filter dry over night then apply the oil.

@@chriscapo5963 huh? You don't have to actively WATCH it dry. Let it dry and then wake up five mins early the next day, oil it, and throw it back in the vehicle. This isn't rocket science, here

How do I get the thing off to clean it? I've loosened the screw for the metallic ring around it and cannot get the filter to come out. Is there another screw I need to loosen or do I need to very forcefully yank and twist it off? Don't want to break something...

@@gb6003 thanks, I had to give it quite a few forceful twists and tugs and it finally came off. After that cleaning it was a piece of cake.

It’s road dirt… just spray it away. It doesn’t need to be disposed of in any special way. It did make my pee red tho so i wouldn’t recommend drinking it even tho it’s cherry flavored

@@tmp1k i did mine outside and the water/cleaner just goes into the earth. It’s either drain, or grass. Not really sure how you plan to catch it, and the garbage dump will basically do the same. It’s not like the cleaner is concentrated after spraying tons of water through

Its probably going to work out cheaper to clean and re-oil a K&N reusable filter than buying a new one every service
