How to Clean a Sculpey Polymer Clay Conditioning Machine (when you've wrecked it by using plasticine!) 😜
Apologies for the wobbly table. I don't usually have my machine set up here, but it's just easier to record on this side of the room.

Thank you, I clean my clay machine once a week when I'm busy making items. I clean mine the same as you. Except, I use a very thin wooden skewer. It's able to get in there between those pieces of metal & clean it right out. 😊

I've never tried it or seen it done, but my first thought is to soak it upside down in a few cm of very hot soapy water, just enough to cover the rollers. Beyond that, I would spritz quite a bit of alcohol into, and around the rollers, and allow it to soak for a few minutes before trying to clean it more. Personally though, based on the way I see it turning, I'm pretty sure there's something going on with your gears, and suspect they are stripped or misaligned, I would take mine apart (since there isn't much to lose at this point). If you're not comfortable doing that, then I suggest opening the ends, just enough to put some petroleum jelly (or even spray cooking oil) onto the gears. On either side of it, there should be a screw holding on the side plate that covers them. If you loosen those screws, you should be able to pry the cover plate back far enough to use a flashlight and toothpick to get a couple of small globs of petroleum jelly onto to top of the gears, on each end. Then try turning it several times, to work it in. I have actually taken my Atlas 180, and my no name cheapy one, apart like this, put copious amounts of lubricant in there, and it worked wonders! As far as a replacement, the advice I was given by someone in the business for 30 years, is to spend the few extra dollars for an Atlas 150 (15cm wide) or Atlas 180 (18cm wide), and you won't regret it. I made the mistake of buying cheap in the beginning, and not really knowing what I was doing, I put thick pieces of clay through it, needless to say, it's tucked away as my spare now, since it no longer works all that well. Apparently another piece of advice we don't hear enough, is "never put clay through the rollers, that's more than twice the thickness of your setting, the gears are often plastic and easily bent or broken. If you have to buy another, I have heard that they are frequently on the shelves of thrift stores, or found at flea markets, I hope you manage to figure something out! Happy Claying!

Ooh, this is really helpful. Thank you! I'm very tempted to take it apart once I've ordered a new one in and try lubricating the gears as you've suggested, as it's always handy to have a spare. I've only had this unit for a few months and it's always been a bit tricksy when compared to my previous Sculpey machine (that for some reason worked like a dream for years!) so I'm very reluctant to buy another. I bought a really cheap pasta machine as an experiment last year and it was AWFUL, but I am tempted by the Atlas as I've heard that they're premium machines - plus the silver's on sale at the moment. It might be a sign! ;) Thanks again!

@@ClayDisarray No problem at all, I managed to find the Atlas 180, used, and it's a dream compared to the cheap one, but I did exactly what you said, once I had the new one, I took the old one apart. It never worked like the Atlas, but it's nice to have a spare! Have fun, and a sale is always an omen in my mind, lol!

I'm on my third sculpey machine in a year. They are horrible and I clean mine often. I use wooden tooth picks to get the stuck clay.

Oh crikey - I think it's the luck of the draw as to how useful they are. My first Sculpey machine lasted years!

I dread taking apart my machines, but they get a lot of abuse by my kids and need tightening up. It’s worth it though. I do have an Atlas 180 for ‘best’ which I keep lubricated with a spray lubricant and haven’t need to dismantle so far. Good luck.

The Atlas seems like a popular choice! I've been a little reluctant as it's not designed for clay, but I'm now giving it serious thought. The spray lubricant is a great idea, thanks Lizzi! 😃

Have you tried warm water and either Sugar Soap or baking soda. Also to stop squeaking and promote a smoother roller action WD40 or sewing machine oil should do the job3😀

Hi I came across you whilst looking for cleaning tips ....... you do realise that the "sculpey machine" is a really cheap pasta machine that they've "rebranded"...... cracking marketing ploy. I realised this when I bought a £15 cheap pasta machine and my friend bought the sculpey machine and they were identical which was a bit of a bummer due to the price difference x

Many pasta machines and clay conditioners have the same basic design, but the quality of the product can vary dramatically. I've tried a cheap pasta unit and found it near impossible to get clay through it, but my first Sculpey unit lasted years with heavy use. The best machine I've found is the Atlas 150 - exactly the same design again - more 💷 but the quality is 👌

You are right to some extent that Sculpey "rebranded" a cheap pasta machine. But I'd like to think they did some research and tested various machines to find the one that works best with clay. So, there's that.
