Here's a quick, easy to follow, instructional video I made on how I clean my FX6 canister filter!!
Big shout-out to my friend Kyle for being my main actor in this video, and for of course helping me clean my FX6!
I realize everyone has different techniques, but there just seemed to be a lack of "how-to" videos online. I hope this video can help you to disassemble and clean your FX6! Enjoy!!! ~ Sarah Fin
Tip: If your tank is heavily overstocked, or you have issues with nitrates, consider rinsing your sponges in aquarium water to preserve beneficial bacteria!

Best time to honestly do the cleaning. Specially since I got about 4 filters to change varying from the 300 gallon down to my 40 gallon. Course, these days now I am drunk and high. So these videos are always welcomed for this physical and mental activity.

Sarah! Thank you SOOO much for this video! I've been terrified to touch mine. I didn't know u could drain it first, now I'm on the hunt for that nifty drain hose. I've had multiple surgeries and didn't know how on earth I would lift the beast! I'm recently single and my ex always handled the canisters for me due to my condition. But this has given me the hope and faith I needed to tackle it myself!!! I'm now ur newest subscriber! ❤❤❤

@@jayjohnson3751 You don't really need to as theirs already a syphon in place through the intake tube when you shut off the valve. As long as the out valve is open then water will flow freely into the filter when you open the in valve and as in this video you will see air being evacuated out of the filter. If you also take out & clean the intake then you will need to refill. Ideally do a partial water change at the same time as you will lose water when emptying filter etc.

extremely informational video Sarah, I've noticed your media was filled with gunk and what not however the bio they have in their tray is useless than crappy ceramic, more like a marble smooth surfaced media also they placed it in middle when it should be right at the bottom where no muck is going to stuck since the water flows from top to bottom in fx6 and trust me the bottom one is the crystal clear water after mechanical filtration. I have changed mine on both fx6 on my 500 gal tank and I only have to change water once every month more or less. No nitrate reading now after changing the positions and bio media filtration. cheers

Dont do water changes the same day as canister pump cleaning. It can effect to much of the good bacteria. Also use water that has no chlorine in it to clean out your filter. Or else your starting all over again, your tank will need to cycle and nitrates and ammonia are going to spike. Thank you for the video!!! I have a Fx4 and found this video helpful ❤❤

This gets a lot more interesting for those of us who have 12" wide doors on our stands. The only way to get the base out is to take the lid off and turn it 90 degrees. We've got to do all maintenance by leaving the base inside of the cabinet and lifting the media trays out only. And that's with the FX4, which is shorter. The FX6 might not even be able to get under some tanks without loading it into the cabinet from behind before the tank and stand are moved into place against the wall.

Good video with all the steps but I'm like 99% sure u need the clean/rinse all foams with the aquarium water so it retains the necessary bacteria for the fish. Other videos have said it but I could be wrong, if anyone knows please reply. Also if anyone cleans their fx6 filter and it doesn't turn back on after, try opening up the whole thing and clearing out gravel near the rotor and actually take off the rotor itself and scrub out any built up gravel and rinse it a little then check the o ring and put it back together carefully. This just happened to me and I nearly got a heart attack lol.

+Sarah Fin Each time you clean the filter and empty out the water. The tank water decreases? Do you add back the same water level amount it was before you cleaned the filter? If so do you let the water sit in a bucket for a while for room temperature? Do you treat it for PH before adding it back in? I was told the chlorine can harm the fish.

There's no exact answer for your question unfortunately, it depends on the size of your tank it depends on your bio load , if you have a large tank with only that canister I would recommend cleaning it every two months a 75 gallon or smaller I would recommend cleaning it every three months again it totally depends on your bio load and if you have powerheads or gravel or sand or bare bottom how often you clean the gravel etc.

@sarahfin3810
@sarahfin3810 9 жыл бұрын
luvmyhondafit Hey! I just added a note in the video stating that it is good to rinse them in aquarium water to preserve bacteria if your tank is heavily overstocked and/or has nitrate issues. Hope that helps! I watch my levels closely after a water change, and only when I completely replaced the sponges to new ones did I notice any changes. I think more bacteria survives the rinsing process than people think...
@AJKAquaria
@AJKAquaria 9 жыл бұрын
Sarah Fin I agree that most of the bacteria in the sponges can survive a quick rinse. There's so much surface area in an FX style filter; it's almost like cleaning one filter at a time. That being said, I am currently on a well and have no worries. I have 5 of these filters and would hate to clean the sponges in a bucket of water. I just blast away with the hose. Good video and presentation. I never utilize the drain valve. Fluval recommends that you fill the canister with a couple gallons before sealing back up, no? I honestly cannot remember...
@sarahfin3810
@sarahfin3810 9 жыл бұрын
You should def fill the canister before plugging it in, so that's why I let it fill via gravity beforehand. :) so happy u like the video. really hope its helpful for some folks. but yes I agree. the bacteria survives enough to handle what was washed away. :)
@AJKAquaria
@AJKAquaria 9 жыл бұрын
Yea not before powering up but before sealing the lid. I usually fill almost to the top then do as you did; open intake followed by return. Then again, I fill with well water and have no need to worry about chlorine/chloramine. I find this has helped with initial microbubbles as well. And I just checked the FX5 & 6 manuals. There's no mention of filling the bucket beforehand. Must be thinking of a different filter... It's a powerhouse at a reasonable price. There's always sales about. I've never spent more than $300 on one.

I know when first setting up the fx6 you are required to add two gallons of water to it.. do I repeat those steps after cleaning the canister or will the canister refill itself once plugged up? So what I'm asking after replacing all my media/trays back into the canister do I place the empty canister just with the trays /media "no water" and close it or do I add the "2 gallons of water" to the trays/media and close and plug it up?

Hi there. I'm thinking of getting one of these for my arena aquarium but I'm getting ( online) conflicting info on the dimensions?Could anyone confirm for me EXACTLY how wide it is, both at the top and its "footprint ". I'm not worried about the height I can be certain I'm ok there, but the width could be the breaker. Thanks!

I didn't notice a difference with the purigen sadly but I added carbon and it really helped clear up the water!
