Great video Richie. We've been using Berkey since 2004 and we love it. Instructions say to scrub the candles but it wears them out especially the closer to the bottom you go, that's because the bottom filters more water. If someone could make the candles so that you could flip them upside down they would last twice as long.

Thanks so much for demonstrating the compressed air cleaning method. Im so annoyed at how little info there is about that. I live off of well water and had my filters for less than 2 years, and they've stopped filtering the top chamber to about 1/3 of the water remaining. And they've slowed down a lot. I scrubbed them real hard one time and it improved the filtering slightly, but only for about another week. Will definitely try the compressed air method next time I clean them! All the info I keep reading is from people filtering tap water, and it's frustrating that berkey themselves don't provide extra information for people who use their filters in slightly more rural situations, especially since filtering all kinds of water is a huge feature of their filters

I have a Berkey as well and just scrub them down and re-prime them. I have never used compressed air. Just keep in mind, not to use too much air psi, since the one end is just glued on and I have seen them split. I just changed out a set of filters after 8 or so years. The old filters were filtering slow, even after a good cleaning. Possibly calcium build up, not sure.

Seems like a slick method to clean the filter. We used to have a berkey and always had this problem.. At some point I suppose the activated charcoal would loose its power to absorb chemical toxins. Because of the cost of these filters, I did lots of experimentation with making your own activated carbon by using hot salt water. Certainly not as potent as store brought activated carbon, but it would turn tea into clear water within a day. All very interesting.

You're the reason I bought I bought one almost 2yrs ago and been using it since. Texas has some of the worst water quality in the country, so bad it almost killed my labrador due to a toxin he picked up outta one of the local lakes where 90% of our drinking water comes from and I noticed the water will actually change the color of rubber wading boots. South of me the ground water has so much tritium and "other" radioactive elements that it can't be used anymore. Thanks for sharing. Note that the fluoride filter have aluminum in them. Drinking aluminum is bad, too. It is a great idea to filter the Berkey water a second time to get rid of the aluminum. The best solution is to stop adding the bydro fluorosilicic acid, along with hundreds of other pollutants that come with it. This stuff is scraped off the chimneys of phosphate mining processing plants. Look it up!

Hi Richie, I hope you see this question! Thank you so much for sharing this information - you saved me $300! I bought myself a little dual rechargeable/12V air compressor, and I cleaned my filters. Worked like a charm! Here's my question: if you've blown everything out with the compressed air, don't you have to reprime the filters, to fill them back up with water? I did, just to be on the safe side, but I'd value your advice on this. Thanks again!

Nice vid. I assumed the black filter was fluoride remover and the white the standard. Advice rocks ---- hair aint bad - beats paying 45 bucks at the shop.

Richie, thanks again for the great information and taking the time provide the information. My only question regarding using the air compressor is the psi you may recommend. 20#s, 30#s, etc. Only if your time permits a response, thanks again.

Never even thought about using air to blow it out. Good Idea you got there. Filters are up to $166 for 2 now. Yikes! Mine use to break at the stem and leak until i started using rubber washers on both sides of the stem, instead of just inside. That cost me a lot of money to learn. Those stems are not just made to strong. Now if i could figure out a way to reglue the stem where they meet the carbon filter. Then I could reuse those old broke ones that still have life in them. Any who gonna need the old berkey when it hits. I dont have to deal with Flouride because its well water.

I’ve considered repairing leaky filters. Didn’t want the possibility of chemical contamination from any glue. Holler if you come up with a safe way to repair them.

@@truthalways Yes but it's not added fluoride like municipal water which adds fluoride from pollution scrubbers from the fertilizer industry.

I’m 25 years into the trade of plumbing and first and foremost my filtration system is insane. 25 stages of filtration before the water hits my lips. Fluoridation pisses me off. Hot subject here.

It pisses me off too. I am amazed why almost everyone accepts this. We shouldn't be paying taxes when the government is poisoning us with water additives.

But if he reccommends a psi of 60-90 with a can of air how can this be achived? And do we still need that little ten$ rubber tip ??
@SallyInCT
@SallyInCT 2 жыл бұрын
@@sarahbarber5418 I’ll have to rig up my pressure gauge in the tubing to check the psi - all I know is I hooked up about a 5” of tube with cone tip to the can nozzle (instead of the lil coffee stirrer sized thing that came w the can and it did blow out water/etc out of the length of the filters... I repeated it a few times then ran em under scalding hot water and they’re running beautifully.
