Hello Marcos, The best care for the plants indoors, besides bright light is to submerge them for a few seconds once or twice a week depending on how hot and or dry your air is, and to turn them upside down for several seconds after taking them out of the water so that the excess water has a chance to drain out.

I have been trying to look everywhere for the very thin flexible plastic coated wiring you used to hang these airplants in this episode. I have looked everywhere and even online and cannot find em. Can you provide a link to where I can acquire some? This wire does not exist in all the hardware stores in my state. Yes I checked at Home Depot and Lowe’s too! No luck. Thank you for helping me. I am looking for wiring in a variety of colors not just white color wire. Thank you so very kindly in helping me.....

There doing good but don't look anything like the size of yours are. Are these plants that can live for years and also would they do better outside under porch not in direct like who h is best. I read where hanging a plant upside down when you see new pups can encourage it to form clumps, does it matter how the plant is hung? I hang them this way so they drain better. Received my order, delighted with everything, thank you for the extra plant very kind of you.

Hi Judith. You're welcome about the extra Tilly-it's nice to have a pleasant surprise once in a while, right? It shouldn't matter HOW the plant is hung as long as it's getting the requisite amount of light and water.
@rainforestflora8691
@rainforestflora8691 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Judith, I didn't see your question until now so apologies for that. I suppose that may be true although I haven't really thought of that as a way to form a clump. Some Tillys are ageotropic and some are geotropic-some grow irrespective of the light source and others will grow toward the light. Hanging the plants upside down will certainly alleviate any rot issues due to the meristematic tissue at the base of the plant from being too wet for too long which can cause rot.

Maybe you could tell us how to care for this gorgeous alien-like plant, and how long they grow until they die off...I heard this plant grow, flower and then give a few pups and eventually die. Not sure if that's true or not.
@paulisley7225

Hello Burnout minion, Other videos we've produced discuss Tillandsia care in detail. In short, tillandsias are like people in that the grow and mature, and then produce new offset plants (pups) during and after they bloom (for most of them). The larger types can live for many years before blooming. For most of the smaller ones, their life cycle from offset it to grow, mature, flower and start the process over again with new plants, this on an annual basis. Good Growing to you!

Greetings from Western Australia! Wow, those tillandsias are absolutely stunning. I was actually looking at a Spanish moss related video on YT and this one popped up, seeing the image had me instantly go "wow, I have to see this!". I have only been collecting tillandsias for around 1.5 years but absolutely love them. Sadly my success rate in keeping and maintaining them has been around 70% and it's distressing when a silly error kills a beautiful (and hard to come by) plant. Your tips in this video have been excellent and I'm glad I stumbled upon it so I will have to check out your other videos. I was sorry to read in the comments that Paws is no longer around, that's heartbreaking. However I will ask, are there any tips on how to stop cats chewing tillys??!!

Hi Ashley, If the leaves aren't brown but rather gray, this is the way they're supposed to be. In water the white (gray) fuzz, the trichomes, becomes transparent so what you see is the green chlorophyll in the leaves themselves.

I love air plants. Their method of absorbing water through foliar trichomes is endlessly fascinating. But what is the best length of time for soaking in a bucket of water? Wonder what Paul thinks?
@rainforestflora8691
@rainforestflora8691 5 жыл бұрын
Indoors, mine are in moderate, temperate conditions and I submerge them under "good water" once a week for five seconds or so and then I hold them upside down for a couple of seconds to mostly drain them.. April will mark five years since I began doing this and it's worked well for me. For you, you have to be aware of your humidity, temperature, etc.
@newbotany
@newbotany 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, thanks for your reply. I ran some experiments here in the UK in 2017. I found that the plants continued to absorb water for up to 16 hours when immersed. There were no problems with plant death. As it is now winter with outside temperatures of around -2 Deg, I immerse for around 4 hours every 3 weeks. It would be nice if definitive guidance on this was published, but I haven't seen any up to now.

I’ve collected a large trash receptacle of rain water. Can I continue using that throughout the year to soak my tillandsias & other plants or will it get too old and contaminated over time and jeopardize the health of the plants?

I submerge them in RO water for at least 15 minutes, and I do this every 3rd or 4th day, as in our part of the world summer temperature is 35 degree Celsius usually.

It could go either way. If the "grandmother" plant still has good leaves, it should continue to produce offsets.

Hi Tina-I just saw this. Sorry it took me so long. I don't use Facebook much and I was responding to someone else's message. I don't remember the ancestral plant but this is a good, general rule. The ancestral plants will continue to produce offsets as long as there are leaves left the cells of which can photosynthesize. Sometimes we are amazed that with just a couple of leaves a Tilly will fight for life and produce an offset.

Hi Diana, Not necessarily in this order but...Some species grow larger than others; some plants within a given species grow larger (just like people); and, of course, care has a lot to do with it. Bright light, a good watering schedule with good water and the judicious use of a fertilizer that has ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen like Rainforest Flora's, Epiphyte's Delight. Good Growing!

We use one that we've had made for over 35 years that works really well called Epiphytes Delight. It has ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen so the plants can use it. Without having any soil they can't use a urea based nitrogen. We have it at the nursery, and it's available at most of the Home Depots in CA and many nurseries around the U.S.
