Nothing cleans better than oven cleaner. Wrap everything with one piece of HD aluminum foil (left ledges, grease pan, grease trough, and the drip bucket.

I get my foil from Sam's Club/Costco in the foodservice sized roll. One roll usually lasts about a year for me and it's the right width for covering the grease tray as you have done in this video. I learned the hard way to make sure you have a dust bag in your shop vac when you vaccum out...or you end up with another mess on your deck/patio, hahaha

For the window I suggest getting MEECO'S RED DEVIL 701 Woodstove Glass Cleaner. This stuff is amazing. You can spray it on, and it will break up the creosote off there like nothing. You can use a paper towel, so you don't have to use something as abrasive as the pads on it.

I have the Davey Crockett model (smallest). What I've found that works really well for the grates is to get a small tub which has a lid that will seal it reasonably well (more air-tight the better). I place the grates in the tub, pour in about 1/4- 1/3 cup household-ammonia, close the lid and let the fumes do their magic. About 2 hours later (I usually let it go at least overnight) most grease/drippings will fall off under a stream of hot water. You might need a little scrubbing with abrasive sponge or steel wool for some crustys, but the grates look brand new afterword. If you've never used household-ammonia, a word of caution -- boy does it stink and will sting your eyes/nose. If you or someone has respiratory problems, this might not be a good idea for you. Also NEVER mix, accidentally or otherwise, any ammonia with any chlorine bleach (Clorox, etc). The combination will give off chlorine gas which can be deadly.

@The Insufferable Tool - What I do after is send it down the drain. I wash them in a sink in the house (I have used the kitchen sink and a deep laundry room sink.) I do it all in the house, I have an overhead fan like you'd find in most bathrooms and leave that on for a few minutes until the stink clears out. You could do it outside, weather permitting. Generally the grates don't "soak" in the small amount of ammonia, but they could if you wanted to. Never tried "boiling water". Respirator -- Depends on you and your housemates. My wife has mild asthma, I always tell her to "stay out of here" when the stinks around, she's never had any issues. I should have stated when I first posted that I do this right after using the grates (same day at least), so the crustys aren't too bad. If your grates are really gummed up and thick crustys, you might have to do this several times. Some guys use "Oven cleaner" for that. It can be nasty too, but newer products tend to be not so bad. This ammonia method is cheap, I just bought some more ammonia at Wally World, $1.50 for 1/2 gal. That will last me for a couple of years. Hope this is helpful. You might want to reread my original post, as I'm going to clarify some of what I wrote.

I don't use my grease bucket. Instead I use either an empty tin can or an aluminum soda can with the lid cut out. I made the handle out of a clothes hanger which I use over and over. For soda cans I simply punch handle holes with an ice pick. For the heavier tin cans I use a battery powered drill...... disposal is so much easier than cleaning. The original bucket now catches pocket change that once full is used to buy more pellets.

I still absolutely love mine! You can read all over the internet about stuff but it might be 1% of people that complain. What I really like about GMG is that they listen to customers and will make changes to fix whatever issue you might have. The warranty is top notch. I have a build video in my channel that will help you. Where are you located?

No because the auger is full. You only have to take the first step again if you run the pellet hopper completely empty.

You can make you own can liners by forming foil over the outside of the drop can then it will fit inside . When your smoking is done, remove the foil and toss or reuse again next session. The result is a clean can.

@DR. Smoke Very helpful. Thank you! I have a 10 year-old Weber Summit gas grill that's on it's last legs. Thinking of getting GMG. Good to know how to maintain. I'm kind of lazy about maintaining my grills (to say the least). Seems like this requires some diligence because it's pretty sophisticated. The Weber is a little less maintenance, just because of it's high heat cooking. Do you think the extra care needed for the GMG is worth it because of its more consistent results? I just want to make good food :-)

Marshall i know it might look like a lot, but once you get the procedure down it will take around 10 minutes. Again this is a deep cleaning which really only needs to be done about every 5-6 bags of pellets. I came from a weber Smokey mountain 18.5” to clean and maintain was a true pain every single time. The GMG offers very constant results and very little maintenance. You will be very happy when your not maintaining a fire all day and worrying if your temp is still ok. With the GMG you set and forget. Where are you located Marshall?

@ronradil
@ronradil 4 жыл бұрын
Once you cook in the smoker it gets seasoned like cast iron. Leaving a thin layer of grease will protect the bare metal. If it really bothers you and you wanted to paint it you would have to clean the area with acetone before you use high temp paint on it. That would require you to do another burn-in to season the new paint.

You do not have to recharge the pellet box at all when cleaning. The only reason you would have to do that is if you ran the auger empty. If you keep pellets in it you would never have to do this step.
