Regular cleaning helps jewelry look its best. We recommend that you bring your jewelry in to your local jeweler every six months to one year for a professional cleaning. But, in between visits to the jeweler, you can use these techniques to help keep your jewelry looking great.
We cover several different cleaning methods including:
- Windex and toothbrush
- Jewelry cleaning solutions
- Ultrasonic cleaners
- Steam cleaners
- Polishing cloths
With any cleaning method, you should always be very careful to avoid damaging fragile gems. We recommend that you get the advice of a gemologist before cleaning your jewelry at home to make sure the technique you use won't damage it.
We also cover some common myths about cleaning jewelry at home including:
- Toothpaste
- Boiling water
- Soaking overnight in amonia
If you have any questions or if you need a good place to have your jewelry professional cleaned, please get contact us. We would love to help.

I have a silver necklace , 3 months ago I gave it to a jewel store to make it shorter because it was little to big for me. I think he used some kind of heater because when I got it back the necklace was much darker in color and its shininess had disappeared. Do you think the connoisseur could help to remove the dark stains from the necklace ? I would appreciate any feedback!
@ArdenJewelers
@ArdenJewelers Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, and I'm sorry to hear about your necklace. That's a tricky one. It's very common to use a torch to repair silver chains, so it's likely that heat was used. This is not really a bad thing in most cases. Some silver jewelry is plated and it's possibly that when the repair was done that plating had to be polished off which could cause the change in color. You can definitely try the silver dip. There's a good chance it will work, but it's also possible that the piece needs more of a professional polish. I think your best bet would be go back to the jeweler and ask them if they can polish it up a bit. Most shops don't mind doing some touch ups on their work to make their customers happy.

I'm considering buying a connoisseur jewelery cleaner but I don't want to mess up the steps and ruining my chain. So I leave it in the cleaner for like 5-10 seconds, I rinse it off immediately but with cold or hot water? After that I dry it with a cloth, correct? I have a Figaro Sterling Sliver chain 5mm 22 inches. I'll let you know if it worked
@ArdenJewelers
@ArdenJewelers 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I would stick closer to 5 seconds if possible. You don't want to leave it in too long. The water temperature shouldn't really matter. We typically use cold or room temperature water to rinse off the jewelry. Then go ahead and dry it off as we showed in the video. Good luck and let us know how it goes. :)

I’m wondering the same thing bro lol , if you read on the back of the sterling silver cleaner it says that it can lead to Thiourea which can cause cancer
@ArdenJewelers
@ArdenJewelers 3 жыл бұрын
Some more good questions. Yes, the pungent smell is normal. It's part of the fun. :) The smell normally won't linger on the jewelry itself after it's been rinsed. If it still smells after a day or so, it might be worth bringing it in to a local jeweler for a deeper cleaning. As for the safety of the solution, we aren't doctors and can't give medical advice. I can say that we have gotten it on our hands before and as long as we have rinsed them off thoroughly and quickly we haven't had any issues. That said, read the label and follow all the instructions. Finally, if you don't feel comfortable using it, that's what jewelers like us are here for. Bring in your jewelry and we'll help you get it shining like new again.

Right now I use ultrasonic with solution and maybe I’ll put the connoisseur gold cleaner tub in the ultrasonic so the waves pass through. Been thinking about getting a steamer but I’m not sold on it. What do y’all think is best.
@ArdenJewelers
@ArdenJewelers 2 жыл бұрын
A steamer is fantastic addition to your cleaning tool kit. Use it as a final step after you finish the rest of your cleaning routine. Like the utltrasonic though, you always need to remember to be careful about what you steam as some sensitive gems can be damaged by the heat of the steam.

@ArdenJewelers

Good question. We haven't noticed any impact from these kinds of small particles in our solution. We will typically use a jar until it no longer cleans effectively. The time this takes varies based on how much you use it typically around 6-12 months. Hopefully that helps.

That's a good question. We don't typically recommend polishing (even with a cloth) anything that's plated. The plating is very thin and can be removed if you polish it. A light cleaning with warm soapy water and a tooth brush should be safe.

@ArdenJewelers 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. Sterling silver refers to a metal that contains at least 92.5% pure silver with the rest being made up of other metals. Sterling silver is usually stamped with a "925" stamp or simply "sterling". If your jewelry doesn't have either of these stamps anywhere, it is most likely not sterling. Hopefully that helps.

@@ArdenJewelers hello, I had a 14k gold Franco chain polished at a jewelry store. When I got it back it seemed darker, more like a 18k gold look. I didn’t like it so I used a silver tarnishing cloth to take it off. It did work, only problem is I couldn’t get in between the tight links so the chain looked like it was 2 toned in color and it looked really bad so I just had them polish it again for me. I tried everything but could never make that chain look lighter , like when I used the silver tarnishing cloth. Do you think that silver liquid tarnish cleaner would take the polish off my chain? Make it look lighter, like 14k again? I tried everything and nothing takes that polish off , only the cloth did. It was the same brand cloth as the liquid you have in this video was? Your feedback is very much appreciated, thank you.

Also I used that silver tarnishing cloth on my 14k gold Saint Christopher pendant and it took the “dull” polish off in the center. It was polished like all traditional Saint pendants are, or at least how I’ve seen them. Now every jewelry store I go to says they can’t re-polish the pendant to make it look like it use to. Any suggestions on how I could go about having that re-polished professionally? It has more sentimental value than anything that’s why I’ve been holding on to it but not wearing it. Thank you again.
