Want to get more life out of your sandpaper? If you’ve been wondering how to clean sanding belts, good news is, it’s easy. All you need is an abrasive cleaning stick.
ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT ON DRUM SANDERS
Of course we want to get more life out of every piece of sandpaper we use in the shop, but this is especially important on drum sanders, for a handful of reasons. Good quality paper for drum sanders ain’t cheap, so it makes sense to get as much mileage out of it as possible. In addition to the cost of the paper, you may be custom cutting rolls of abrasive to fit your sander. That means you’re investing money, and your time, to keep sandpaper on your machine. A little preemptive cleaning will go a long way toward keep your sandpaper cutting. Clean sandpaper is going to cut better, with less chance of burning your material, than clogged paper.

HOW TO CLEAN SANDING BELTS
The simplest approach is to grab the abrasive cleaning stick and run it across the drum. Want to distance yourself a little from the action? No problem. We show you how to make a drum sander cleaning “wand” for just that purpose.
DRUM SANDERS ARE GREAT
A drum sander is a wonderful tool to have in the shop. It can save you A LOT of time sanding, and give you better results than a hand-held sander. There are a ton of benefits of a surface sander. In order for a drum sander to work correctly, the abrasive has to be put on it correctly. On many machines this is done by wrapping the paper on the drum. This can be a little tricky. Here are tips on how to wrap sandpaper on a surface sander.

Another thought: I agree with what LiPe said below. I needed to clean my stationary belt sander and did not have an 'official' cleaning stick. What I did have was a dried out tube of clear silicone sealer. Having nothing to lose, I tried it. It worked great and the rest is history. That was 10+ years ago and I'm still using it. Since a cleaning stick and a tube of sealer are about the same price, it's your call. But if you have some old tubes of sealer laying around you might want to keep one just in case...

Tip from Stew Mac video: For really stubborn buildup, place sandpaper in container, soak in CMT Orange Tools Formula 2050 Blade & Bit Cleaner overnight, rinse with water hose and let dry. The cleaner can be used over and over.

This is a great technique for light clogging, but it won't work for pitch and such. I remove the belt, role it up tight, then drop it in a wide mouth quart mason jar. The roll will loosen after you get it in the jar. Then cover the belt with a liquid cleaner. A couple of people on here said mineral spirits but I use Krud Kutter Original. You can get a gallon of it at Walmart for $18 or so. Let soak over night. Then simply rinse the crud away in the sink. Let dry and put it back on your sander good as new. When you are finished put the lid on the jar and label it. You can use it over and over. A gallon will last a lifetime.

I read somewhere that a piece of polycarbonate (NOT plastic) can help remove the really stubborn stuff. I found it is not perfect either, but will remove some of the residue that the rubber stick will not. Serious burn, like when I did not pay enough attention to increasing the gap on the last wrap and it climbed, Not so much....in that case, just make a note of where the burn is and work around it. -Veteran '66-68

Looks like there are 2 types think one is a large Glue stick and the other like this made from ??

The cleaning sticks are the same. One is newer, and the other one is getting too small to be safely used so it is attached to a stick to be used as long handle. That way you can use it all up without getting your hand too close to the abrasive.

I have had good luck cleaning sanding belts without heating them first. I don't know what would happen if you heated it first, but it sounds like something that might hurt more than it helps. Paul

I Heard take belt off then brush ammonia on the belts, then jet spray the ammonia off and leave to dry, ammonia eats at the sap apparently, Obviously safety in mind, goggles and gloves and protected gear must be worn, as ammonia is a strong chemical,

The cleaning stick doesn't help always though! My discovery in case of resin buildup: take off the belt and put it in your wife's best cooking pot. Fill it up with hot water and a cup of ammonia and let it boil for a minute, then let it sit for an hour or so. You'll be surprised: it comes out as new, without having to use a wearing wire brush.

Thanks for the tip. Where are your safety glasses? ( eye glasses, even safety eye glasses do not give side or top or bottom protection).
