Hello cleaners anonymous!
I am trying something new - cleaning an old mattress (or two)! I have always been afraid to tackle this type of cleaning because I never knew how to get rid of stains on a mattress. It seems that the stains only grow in size when you try to spot clean them. So once and for all I am going to solve this life-long mystery (well, adult-long mystery). Get ready for some scrubbing action and magic of simple ingredients!
Not to spoil the surprise but here is what I used: 1 cup water, 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide (3%), 1 big table spoon of baking soda, and 1 table spoon of dishwashing liquid. The measurements are approximate. If you see it too bubbly, then reduce dishwashing liquid. If you think you want to bleach the stain more/less, then adjust peroxide by 1/2 cup more/less.

Next time less water you only need 1 cup water, 2 tlbs of baking soda and about 2 cups of peroxide and I recommend getting the strongest sold near you. Start outside the stain and work your way inward. I blow dry with my hair drier in between and depending on if it's pre do 2 treatments. If it's blood do 3 or 4 treatments. Put lemon juice in for white mattresses and leave lemon juice out if it's a colored mattress! You're welcome ladies 🤗❤

If you live somewhere like me where hydrogen peroxide is hard to get hold of I used plain bleach at half the concentration she used I didnt like using the baking soda it just turned into a wet paste and didnt do a whole lot besides making friction which pilled the soft pillow top. I was also worried about the long term for leaving bleach on fabric so tried to rinse it out after by using water and a cheap wet/dry vaccum. Which I think worked well the mattress didnt smell like chlorine after that. I found it easier to get that second lot of water onto the mattress using my hose through the window on a mist setting instead of using a spray bottle which took forever. The wet vac was very satisfying too, the water and the bleach mix both went on clear but came out again brown. I think that might be good for lifting it out rather than pushing the stain in too. The wet vac cost me $60 nzd (so like, $30 usd?) and I plan to do a deep clean of my car and couch with it too so thats why I thought it was worth it... and dont worry, I know, I do fully expect it to die before I finish all these projects since it was so cheap, its more of a "use it till it does to save time" machine... its not a investment. In the end this method got my mattress that I let my sister borrow from having a big dark yellow stain to mottled white (from bleach not being applied evenly I think) I think it'll need another pass on a different weekend. Giving this feedback to add to the info for people, not to complain, thankyou for making this video it gave me a great starting point.

Great job on cleaning your mattress! I am glad some parts of the video helped you get started. Yes, I agree that baking soda stays behind in powder form if not rinsed out. The easiest way to get it out is just to vacuum it when it dries. But I am glad bleach worked for you! Clearly there are multiple ways of cleaning :) my way is not the only way, as bleach is an excellent disinfectant! Since doing the video, I have bought an upholstery (wet) vacuum to help with stain extraction rather than spreading, so I wholeheartedly support your decision :) I just know that not everyone can pull a hose through their window😂 great job!!

the grime on the sides are most likely grease based stains - you could increase the amount of dish detergent and it might work those out as well. great job though
@YuliyaHardin
@YuliyaHardin 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought. I did not think of stains on the side being grease based. Originally I thought these stains are just particles of dirt embedded in the fabric from mattress being dragged. Next time I'll try adding more detergent to see if it helps. Thank you!

I really appreciate this video and will be using this solution tonight on a 6 month old mattress that my English Bulldogs have been using as a bed in the spare bedroom. Hm do you know what the stains are from? Certain stains like those from red wine, blood, ink, and dye are hard to remove from fabric. Most common mattress stains are from pee, spilled drinks, blood, sweat, and dirt. All of these can be removed fairly well using the method in this video, except blood. Hmm How exactly small and big are these spots? My first two thoughts are either cat pee or some liquid. Cat pee can be tested by using a black light, which would illuminate the spot. However, cat pee smells strong and not of grease. The second guess is liquid, and this can be anything. If it's an older mattress it may absorb even plain water and make it look yellow. Yet again, this would not produce a greasy smell. Did you happen to switch from using lotion to coconut or olive oil maybe? I wish I could help more.

@YuliyaHardin 4 жыл бұрын
If you were to hand wash the sheets, then the solution would work. However, if you were to put the sheets in the washing machine, I would leave out dishwashing soap because it may turn your laundry into a foam party room! The hydrogen peroxide can also be replaced by bleach. And lastly, I would recommend adding the sheets only after all ingredients mixed well with water, otherwise some peroxide/bleach will leave extra white spots, which may turn into holes at the next wash. Ask me how I know haha

Did This Cause The Mattress To Mold Or Stink.
@YuliyaHardin
@YuliyaHardin 5 жыл бұрын
I still have all three mattresses a year later and none of them developed any smell or mold. I let the mattresses air dry vertically for a few days before putting bedsheets on them. You could speed up the process by possibly using a hairdryer or placing the mattress in a warm location (sun room or outside). If the mattress has a pillowtop like the first one, it will take longer to dry than the one with a traditional top. Thank you for a good question!

Thanks, I had a used bottle of Hydrogen peroxide solution 6% from many years ago and Soda Crystals (for cleaning stains off anything in the house) and as soon as I spayed it, it stank a little like poop and I thought it’s normal and now that I finished it, my room stinks badly. Is that normal?
@YuliyaHardin
@YuliyaHardin 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I had to look up soda crystals to see if there would be a different reaction. However, the solution you made seems fine. So it makes me think there was something in the mattress that released the smell once dampened. I would suggest washing the mattress again with the same solution, but adding some soap to help battle smells not addressed with the first solution. It may also help airing out mattress in the sun while it's drying (using hair dryer may speed up the process). If the smell improves, then I would wash a couple more times. If the smell does not improve, then I would wash with only water and fragrant soap. I realize it's a lot of washings, but some old stains can be a little tough to lift in one go. Just please make sure the mattress does not stay damp for more than 2-3 days, because mold may start setting in. I hope this helps.

Are there any substitutes to baking soda or will this work without it?
@YuliyaHardin
@YuliyaHardin 4 жыл бұрын
Baking soda is a deodorizer and a mild abrasive. I am not sure if white vinegar deodorize as well, but at least the vinegar helps whiten the stains. Airing out the mattress, especially in the sunlight, will improve the smells. The abrasive function of baking soda can be replaced by using a soft brush instead of a sponge.

@YuliyaHardin
@YuliyaHardin Жыл бұрын
Hmm I was trying to figure out why and came up with some questions. What was the original color of your mattress? Could there have been a yellow dye in the cleaning solution (yellow soap) or the mattress stain (tea, marker)? What was in your cleaning solution? As I understand yellowing of fabric over time is normal as body oils and perspiration build up. Perhaps, your first cleaning attempt evenly spread the original stain making some areas appear more yellow than before. If that's the case, cleaning the mattress the second time should do the trick. I hope you can figure it out soon!

Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching (whitening) agent and mild antiseptic. You don't have to use it but it helps a little bit. To replace it, you can add white vinegar (just never mix vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, use one or the other). Don't worry about the vinegar smell - it will evaporate. The amount of vinegar can be 1:1 to water or as little as 1:4 to water (1 part vinegar, 4 parts water).

Hi,what percentage of hydrogen peroxide should be used for cleaning?
@YuliyaHardin
@YuliyaHardin 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would use between 1 teaspoon and 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide per 1 cup of water. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent, so use the larger amount if you have tougher stains. You should be able to buy the 3% concentration hydrogen peroxide type at most stores. That's the type you use to dilute with water.

Great question. I would skip hydrogen peroxide on black or colored fabrics to avoid discoloring them. I would probably also skip baking soda. Usually just warm water and soap takes care of most stains safely.
@YuliyaHardin
@YuliyaHardin Жыл бұрын
@@benruash1525 also great question. Bacteria should be taken care of by the soap, especially if you use anti bacterial hand soap. Vinegar can bleach fabrics, so I would avoid it on darker fabrics. @YuliyaHardin
@YuliyaHardin Жыл бұрын
@@benruash1525 You are welcome to use baking soda on the seats to absorb the smell. I would sprinkle the baking soda on the dry seats and spread around with a brush, let it sit to absorb smell or moisture, and then vacuum the soda off the seats. After that you can use whatever soap you have with water. If you have more food related stains, then dish detergent would work better removing stains from fat. Otherwise, you can use a fabric detergent or regular soap mixed with water. Just please make sure your seats dry fully within 3 days, because mold starts to grow on day 4.

i am not sure about all red stains, but a tomato sauce stain may benefit from this method: the detergent will help clean it up, while the peroxide will lighten it. If you already cleaned it thoroughly but there is still color left, bleaching using diluted peroxide, white vinegar, or lemon juice it may be the only step left. Exposing to direct sunshine while wet may also help.
