THANK YOU NAMESAKE! Sometimes when I photograph some models, specially kids, that does not hire an make up artist, I have to work around about the oily area... Usually I ask then to clean it up with some moistured paper towel, but it´s a work around and sometimes it does not fix at all. So I love the powder tip! As I´m not a makeu artist... I did not know. Now I will buy it to have in my studio! Very Valuable one! Thank you and God Bless you David!

It was all good but that tip about the oil absorbing sheets is great. I recently shot a coworker & his family in a local park and didn't notice until getting home to touch up the images that his youngest child had little beads of sweat on the bridge of her nose. I'm new to photo editing so it took me more time to remove but having them would've saved me some work. Even though I'm shooting with a different brand camera & lights, applying your guides to my own gear has been relatively easy.

Great tips. I've been churning out school/corporate-type headshots for a few years now in a studio that has under-sized soft boxes that tend to exacerbate shine/specular highlights and - since I couldn't convince management to switch to larger boxes - I've been doing a lot of correction in post. The quickest way I've found is nearly identical to your patch tool method. I make a duplicate layer, do a pretty hasty patch on the shine, then dial back the opacity on the duplicate layer until it appears natural and then flatten. That said, it looks like I may finally get to replace our soft boxes and save myself a lot of time!
@DavidBergmanPhoto

You could also try shooting into a white wall or even a large piece of white foamcore. Lots of ways to soften light!
@stanspb763
@stanspb763 Жыл бұрын
If the room is small, and has white walls, point the lights to the rear upper wall. You can also use the small softboxes to excite translucent screen like a scim to use as the light source close to the subjects. Sometimes small rooms are easier to light omnidirectionally than using large sources. A couple of remote triggered speedlights hitting high on a back wall keeps the floor open and creates very diffused light. Experiment on off hours to get it right and never touch the lights again.

One thing to consider also is that the Xplor 1200 Pro has a basic flash tube without a frosted end on the bulb. Other high end strobes like the entire Profoto line, Broncolor, and the Flashpoint 400 Pro, 600 Pro, and 300 Pro have frosted bulbs/heads. The Flashpoint lights are just on the end, but it still is designed for this exact purpose. The 1200 Pro is likely bare to maximize output since output is the #1 goal of this model, seeing how diffusion/frosting cuts down intensity. But using strobes that have frosted panels or bulbs will greatly reduce the need for other workarounds.

I always have matte powder and wipes in my camera bag. I used to waste money on brushes for the powder, not wanting to reuse them on multiple clients, and then Gary Hughes brought disposable applicators to my attention. 100 latex free applicators can be had for about $7.00. On wipes, for guys like me with shaved heads the wipes are great as long as you blot and not actually wipe. While there's no makeup to smudge the wipes can leave bits of lint behind if there is any stubble. Rather than a shiny head you end up looking like you have dandruff. One other thing I've done is move away from modifiers with silver interiors. While they may get you a little higher F stop, helpful if you're using speedlights, there's still a bit of specularity to the light coming from them. The difference between white and silver interiors is minor once the light passes through a diffusion panel, but it's also addative. P.s. Don't let Seth know you use Portrait Pro. He hates it with a passion.

I use Portrait Pro for all the photos not going to be processed manually. The actor clients want all the photos and that allows auto processing RAW files as a batch, whole the selected few are done with PS/LR. Setting a mild custom preset, the batch processing works really well but most people hate it are using the overly aggressive presets.

The translucent powder is a key in makeup but not all have the same reaction to the skin, oil, and foundation. A pro model will know what will remain neutral but one-time portrait sessions have the choice of hiring an MUA or oil absorbing pads. I have a pretty wide selection of powers for various skin types and blotting paper. Most of my shooting is stage actor headshots or full-length for their intent in transitioning to cinema. We work with casting directors and film directors conducting master classes preparing them for film work. who know how to control oil. Stage actors do their own makeup but they are not doing it for close-ups, their audience is 13 rows away. Cinema or TV makeup is much more complicated and can take two hours for a short scene in makeup. Luckily where I live I can get experienced MUA for modest fees. Three-day master classes twice month with up to 60s stage actors being shot on one of those days, plus video 1-2 dialog pages of video clips, plus a 1-minute introduction video shot for each means keeping MUA busy. In my city, there are a few thousand trained professional stage actors and 250 drama theaters. Also do stills of ballet and opera, for the 8 opera houses and 5 ballet theaters. I have one frequent model whose day job is jazz standards singer. She is beautiful with high cheekbones and perfect features...but produces oil like an oil well. On stage I can only get clean shine-free photos for the first song., then wait for the break for more powder but power builds up so after a short time so don't add any more and trust blotting and post-processing. For model sessions and fashion, if there are more than 3 changes of clothes I get a MUA. The advantage of women with high oil production is their skin looks great for decades longer than most women. Too much oil is better than having too little. She is 36 and passes for 24 and might not have a wrinkle at 50.

A lot of soft boxes have reflector dishes and silver lining. So you don’t have to worry about the light in the middle, the lining gives you hot spots, even if you feather it.

Fade patch selection is a nice touch, but you can also use a blank layer for color between frequency separation layers and a brush at something like 1% or 2% flow to lightly paint over the hotspot while retailing the construct of your lighting. That's the easiest method for me, personally. I'm going to do color work anyway, what's cleaning up a hotspot in the same step?

Getting this right in camera is even more important when shooting video. I remember working with a male subject, and even if he washed his face immediately before the session, we still had a lot of hotspots, and even with a larger light source. Feathering the light is a good suggestion and one I'll try next time this comes up. Is there a type of makeup that the typical guy won't balk at using?

Feathering to soften light is the biggest myth in studio photography, turning the light away from your subject effectively decreases the size of the light source relative to the subject which leads to increased specularity and harder shadows.

Is nobody going to mention polarising filters?

They'll reduce some of the glare, but they don't give you the broad highlights and reduce the texture of the skin that makeup and a soft box will. Makeup really does wonders. People take it for granted in portrait work because they hardly see examples that aren't using it.

@@gregorylagrange the way I see it, following the light to the final image, there are four places to solve this problem. 1. At the light source - using a diffuser 2. On the subject - using makeup 3. In the camera - using a polarising filter 4. In the computer - using patch/clone or compressing highlights The polarising filter isn’t always the right choice but it’s probably the quickest.
