On the other hand, I find LrC’s catalog simple to use and works fine for me. Yes, one catalog, all LrC files in one external HD, that I back up. Organizing by date (yyyy/mm/dd + a descriptive name, then those folders are lumped into a year folder) is my choice. I do not mix Finder changes with LrC. Heavy use of key words, and some use of collections are also part of my organization. 50k files, at the moment, but there needs to be more culling. Always more culling.

Excellent video. One of the best I've seen so far about lightroom cataloging etc. I had one question though... there are some photos that say they are missing or can't find. When i plug up my hard drive, that notice goes away. If I try to leave the hard drive unplugged, and then locate a photo (and then plug up my hard drive to find it, that sometimes works but one I unplug my hard drive, it can't find it anymore. My issue is that I'm building "smart previews" and "1to1 previews" so that I can have the ability to edit the photos in the develop module without the need for having my hard drive plugged in. Say if I wanted to go to a cafe and do some edits and not need to have my hard drive plugged in just yet. I've done it for a bunch of photos already, but some of my recent imports have this issue. Once the photos go "missing" or cant be "located".... even If I do then plug in my hard drive and find/locate them, am I no longer able to develop them if the hard drive is unplugged?

Newbie question. When do YOU decide to delete "unwanted" images after shooting? Like the image of your foot that was accidently taken or if you took 10 shots of the same thing and you uploaded all 10 to lightroom and then decided the best one to develop and edit. What, how and when do YOU decide to delete the extraneous, unneeded, unwanted yet uploaded images?

I have a weird issue where the edits are being saved in the original folder where the image is in. so if i have 2 pictures in a folder on a ssd that i put all folders in just for light room pictures. i also have a separate ssd for the light room catalog. if i start working on the 2 photos and i edit them with light room and Photoshop and other software it saves every edited photo in the same folder that the original is in. so if i edited a photo 3 times i have the original photo with 3 edited photos of the same original. i thought all this info was saved in the catalog, im so confused .

Having just upgraded to Lightroom Classic, I'm great with editing my images, but not so great with organizing my images (catalogues, folders and collections?) :) I've been shooting photo assignments and then just creating a CATALOGUE for each assignment that contains the individual photos. But I know I need to create a folder or collection for them as well, right? HELP! :) Thanks for this tutorial...

hi Tim, so I have multiple photos missing and stuck in the Tether folder. They all have the !, but when I go to locate them they are nowhere to be found. They seem to be missing from the HD which I used for that tethering session. I have not switched HD, nor moved the pict anywhere else, I also did not re-name them. I think I narrowed it down to me switching my lens during the session. It seems like this is causing issues. I turn off my camera, switch the lens and turn the camera back on. I don't know how to fix this and prevent from losing photos!!! Do you know of any setting that I should turn on???? anything else? I use Nikon Z7 II directly into LrC. Thank you

super! I'm struggeling with all the catalogues I have.. replaced and renamed some of them. When I open the different catalogues I can't find the changes I made in some of the albums .. Spending more than three whole days now of how to deal with this, but can't find the answer.

Is it a good idea to delete LR catalog of thousand photos if the mess is too complicated, and then import all the photos again?

I've been taking pictures for the last 3 years and let Lightroom categorize everything by dates. Now it's almost impossible to find a picture so I tried sinking everything together today but all I did was make while Drupal it pictures and I've got over a terabyte of stuff to go through. What's even with my computer at 32 gigs of RAM has taken over 14 hours and I'm still not even close to done

Same happened to me

I have another problem. It is One Drive. When I connect my camera to my desktop to upload my photos to light room One Drive takes over. Even if I click to close it my photos still go there. Plus I am probably importing incorrectly as my photos are missing. Please any suggestions. I cant find my one cloud icon, and Microsoft ill not let me uninstall one drive. Its a mess

Having photos on a single hard drive is convinient, but do not forget to back them up to sparate physical hard drive (preferably external that you store separately from your computer, if it gets stolen etc.) or cloud. Because if that hard drive fails or you loose it, you will loose all your photos!

i have 260 000 photos in my catalogue ! The only slowing down moment is when i start it first time it needs about 5 to 7 seconds! Then it runs perfect and i have all in one place!

You'll never lose a folder if you store files by date. Store by date, organise by metadata. When you import your images let Lightroom sort files automatically into folders by date - and then never touch the folders or files directly again. For the purposes Tim recommends naming your folders, instead use collections, and of course keyword everything. If you use metadata rather than a filder structure you will always be able to find the images you need using the search & filter system. Where Time created a duplicate file, instead use virtual copies (and the auto-generated tiff/psd when opening externally in photoshop via the shortcut in lightroom). Think of the folder structure as the domain of the filesystem, or the computer; and metadata, descriptive information, as your domain - it'll make your life much easier.

This video starts off with way too much bla bla. High on general sense ordering files but I am not here for that... Personally I think it's bad design to have a catalog that expects all changes to be made in it. The info I was really looking for is how to use LR without using the catalog, never seen the point of it.
