Thanks for all of your videos George, nicely filmed and presented in a calm professional manner. Just got a 130i, had 2A99, replaced solenoid and seems to be good. old one was probably getting damaged by the oil from leaking filter housing gasket, so your video for that will be coming in handy soon! Getting the solenoids back in was an absolute nightmare for me, what worked for me (try at your peril given that you don't want the washer to go into the engine!) was to slip the washer onto the thinner part of the solenoid, put the solenoid half way into the block, then i could easily locate the washer into its home behind the notch, then start pushing the solenoid in, it will require a little force to get the washer back onto the fat part of the solenoid (scary as you can't see if its going to fly into the engine or not), and then it goes right in nicely. I noticed on the oil filter housing video gasket that someone asked about bleeding the system, it would be nice if you could add a note in the description about this, as i expect not everyone reads the comments and might miss out on that kind of useful info.

Put your hand behind the metal part and wiggle on it don't come out. The metal part is where the bolt screws and the rest of it is plastic so be careful with that part of the battle

@@GeorgeAusters not sure its all in my mind. But when cleaning them, feels like I get power back for a few days then its back to being sluggish. I went ahead and changed to new OEM parts the other week. After 1 week of driving it feels completely better then before. Instant torque right at the 2000rpm mark.

I cleaned mine as well and didn't know any improvement. I notice that if you change your oil according to the recommended oil change interval, you will never have to clean them. People who have to clean the solenoids only when they drive on the old oil for more tahn 20k miles. I've seen N52 with 20k mile oil change and their solenoid were clean with no sludge.

Just succeed. After driving to shop I waited about 40min, so the engine was still warm and then I used pliers and grabbed the solenoid at the centre (plastic bit) and slightly turning and gently pulling at the same time. To reinstall I had to place the o rings (oiled them before that) in the block first and then solenoid just went back with a bit of a struggle.

Should these solenoids have oil on them? Mine has quite a bit, the idle isn’t super bad but it’s not great. I have code 2AA9. It said first be smaller disa valve then these solenoids were second cause. So I’m hoping it’s that there just dirty and it will solve it

@@FPSAnarchy I bought an inspection camera but did not see the o-ring. Drove a few miles, changed oil and oil filter but saw nothing in there. A BMW mechanic said that there is probably no danger as it is not made of metal, and there is very little risk that something serious will happen. Now we have been driving for a week with the car and nothing has happened. I will drive for a month or so, then change the oil and oil filter again. Best regards from SWEDEN ;-)

*TIP:* Take some fuel and a cup and pour it into the cup. Then connect the solenoid to a 12V power source, amps can be low (a 20 year old phone charger with about 200mA will do fine) and place the solenoid in the cup with the fuel. Now switch the power on and off to force the solenoid to open and close. That way you will flush out all the gung that is stuck inside too. If not then you basically cleaned it just from the outside wich is just half the job. CAREFULL THOU!!! Attach a clip to the end of both wires which will be connected to the pins on the solenoid. DO NOT use the wires to touch the pins while the whole thing is submerged in fuel or else one of those strikes will spark too much and light you up. For the same reason do not do this at your home but somewhere outside with a bucket of water at hand (or a garden hose ready to be used instantly). And no I am not joking :) O rings can be purchased separately or you can order them from a store that sell those for little money which I did and I recommend highly to do this. Even if the old ones are "good" they are probably somewhat hard and their sealing cappabilities are lower. Also when installing it back you may want to put the O ring into the engine opening first and the solenoid second. In some cases you are fine putting them back in together but in most cases you risk damaging the O ring during the installation due to sharp edges around the opening where the solenoid goes. If you lube the whole solenoid with a little bit of engine oil it will slip right in... which may be very helpfull if your workspace is small. BTW once you cleaned the solenoid try to shake it. If it makes a sound you are good. If not then there is still some sticky gunk inside. And don't worry about the solenoid getting damaged as you'd have to smash it with a hammer or drop out of a window in the 20th floor or something. Not saying to not be carefull but merely to not worry too much.
