I wasted like hundreds of gallons of water spraying that out-side grill, decided to take a break, open KZfaq and search for Window AC cleaning, open this video, and you sir taking apart that grill, I was thinking of all that water gone to waste, people!, open KZfaq first, there will be some Samaritan like this gentleman here showing you how not to waste time and resources and do it right. Thank you sir for the time and effort, your good deeds are not gone in vain.

Good job! Nice video • Well done - Cleaning the older AC units requires a level of being able to remember how you took them apart. (I always take a pic with my iPhone) so I remember. I put the vacuum hose on the fins first, sometimes use compressed air too... laundry soap is cheaper than that can of foam. I've noticed in some of the A/c's I clean, the dirt is mixed with oily residue so acetone might help. I do appreciate your efforts on keeping the a/c out of the landfill.

A good grease-cutting cleaner for just about anything mix together some good dishwashing liquid, baking soda, white vinegar, and real hot water. When you combine all of together it makes a VERY sudsy and foamy cleaner. That is what makes it so good about cutting through the grease and grime. Just leave it on for a while and let it sit. it's all-natural and MUCH CHEAPER and efficient than any of that crap you would buy like that foaming cleaner there. It will clean anything. It's great for cleaning your kitchen and it makes your hands super soft and they feel SO good afterward. Just give it a try and I think you'll find yourself using it for everything. By the way, I love what you did there. That was AWESOME. MY window unit I noticed that that the air is not coming out of the unit evenly from both vents. The right side vent is blowing out less air than the left. If you got any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the video! I found an old AC unit in the attic of the house I bought. It's not as big as that one so I hope it's a real cheap model that doesn't clean up but I'm inspired to try it your way. By the way, I like the little powered workbench you have there. Super simple. I think I'll put an awning on the side of my garage.
@JohnSigler123457 жыл бұрын
Agree on statement of coil/refrigerant gas //. But one should consider to fully increase the CFM`s the fan blades should be cleaned as well when one goes into the unit. Older units with metal fins you have to mark any balancing weights with scribe marks in case you accidentally physically remove one to the proper place. In plastic they all can still be cleaned to make optimum air movement across the clean coils. Great video
@TH3C0017 жыл бұрын
Yup. I have to do this with every ac in my house once a year. It's so dusty where I live that it is a necessity to clean them yearly. But our biggest problem is when the squirrel cage fan blades get clogged with mold and mildew and dust. Finally, I figured I could just take a dish brush that looks like a pipe cleaner and and saw that back and forth between each blade. Make an ac that blows like a butterfly flapping its wings blow like a hurricane again.
@Barracuda480825 жыл бұрын
Another great idea is when first installing, duct tape door screen over air slots on outside end of unit. This will reduce dirt getting inside and blocking coils . If screen gets dirty, just wipe with damp cloth and go! I use Big Wally wall foam cleaner or in extreme cases, Oven cleaner but be careful and use protective clothing and eye protection. !!
@FrankWolenczak5 жыл бұрын
So I need to find screen door fragments that are already cut and just duct tape over the top of both of my 5k BTU AC's to keep dirt from getting into it. I wish I knew about using a fragment of a screen door about five years ago! Thanks Gary!

Hey Brother, Go to an AC Supply and get the Gallon Jug of Cleaner $15.00 and mix by the oz based on the strength you need Non ACID. Ask the AC house what brand is the best they carry and why. Got mine from Grangers. I used it every 6 months to clean Motel style units by Friedrich AC in-wall unites and rooftops package unites. We kept those unites running from 1997 until 2017. I believe they kept 2 out of 6 package unites and they were just replaced this year. Compressors were replaced during that time but you don't replace an 8-ton package unit just the compressor. Clean, Clean, Clean, and More Clean and they will last! Good Luck and God Bless!

I use “super clean “ degreaser that you can buy at Walmart. I don’t use a pressure washer for the same reason I don’t use the jet attachment on the garden hose because the coils can bend VERY easily. I just use a degreaser or something like mr clean and let it soak a few minutes. If you have never done this before I highly recommend you don’t try to remove the coil. Last tip some units have different length screws so be sure you put those screws back in the original place. Thanks for the video It’s obvious you have done this before. 👍👍

If you want to keep mold from growing inside of an A/C unit buy a product called Shock-Wave made by Fiberlock you can get it on Amazon as small as one quart. 2 oz of this makes a gallon, smells nice, won't harm skin. Here is a direct link if you want to go directly to the product I am referring to: amzn.to/2cebOcn Just spray it inside the foam housing of the A/C let it dry. Mold will never grow where it has dried. This is used by professionals when dealing with mold, it kills the mold and leaves the area without any type of "undesirable" smell.

Rebekah Underhill, Thank you so much for posting this comment and link! I have mold on the white Styrofoam part of my window ac. It's only a couple years old, and I thought I'd have to junk it and buy a new one. I've been having breathing problems and bronchitis for awhile now, (I'm a smoker, who's trying to quit,or at least cut down) so I was afraid to deal with the mold inside my ac. According to some of the reviews, (under the product) you can spray the mold part and walk away. I wasn't about to put on gloves and a mask and try scrubbing it with bleach like some people suggest. Thanks again!

How do you know when the coils are freezing up?
@DJPenguino516 жыл бұрын
You will see frost on the capillary tube(s) feeding the evap coil spreading to the coil itself. Icing is caused by insufficient airflow (due to dirty coil / filter) or(and), low on refrigerant.

great video my friend its time for me to clean some of my window units , i also have 5 of the friedrich 14000 btu portable ac/heat/humidifier units they work very good but also have to be taken apart to fully clean but its worth it. and they have to be properly draining to work well. the first time it stopped working i called the warranty and they said its dirty and its not covered by warranty and they wanted $300 to clean it, so i have been taking them apart and fully cleaning as needed. its usually once a year due to the extra dust and pet dander , we use them in an animal rescue so all the cat hair gets them dirty fast but they are a very good units cools very good even large areas.

Yea, I never cared for flaming coil cleaner. When I worked at Home Depot they sold it as a cheaper supplement to the normal gallon jug of liquid coil cleaner. Whenever people got it I'd advise them to get the real deal coil cleaner or just use some Simple Green if it's a light duty clean. A few times I mixed a little Ajax degreaser dish soap with water and very little bleach in a spray bottle but if you do that I highly advise letting the a/c air dry for 14 hours after rinsing out with a water hose because if you have shitty lungs like me it'll really suck when you turn it on.

I've never taken an AC apart like this, but with that coil, instead of that spray can you use Mr. Muscle? It's for stoves, foams up, destroys grease and other stuff, you let it sit a few hours to do it's work then clean it off. Also, could you maybe do both sides of the thing off of the unit then use a high-pressure setting to spray it all out? And maybe let it dry before putting it back in? And I would've probably used a wet/dry vac to vacuum the inside of that AC unit, or even a shop vac. I watched a few of these videos and I like your video the best.

Have you tried spraying the foam cleaner vertically instead of side to side? I would think up and down and way closer to the coils would work better as the aluminum fins are vertical. Can you please reply back as I am unsure on methods and really like the foam option instead of just using a garden hose that bends the fins. Also, have you since tried other brands of foam cleaners? Thank you for your video and your time, your knowledge and video are awesome!

You seem like you know air conditioning better than me. My portable unit was like this. It smelled like socks so I sprayed some spray and sit coil cleaner so it would be ok while I was away for work. Next day, I come back and it ain't cool at all or kicking on conditioner. Just fan. I opened it up cleaned it up with coil cleaner and a toothbrush...waited for stuff to dry...it has a dehumidify and air conditioning setting...it was about as fluffy and plugged as yours already cause this unit doesn't have a filter for the bottom coil just the one blowing over the cool coils. I believe it's advertised as air to air as well. The dehumidifier runs and cools now for some reason. My understanding is that shouldn't happen, but it dropped the temp a couple degrees in a short time (5 minutes). Fan runs, but when set on air conditioning it won't kick on. Should I be checking the capacitor and power from switch? Obviously the 410 gas is suitable to run the dehumidifier, but the coil isn't reheating it right, right? I am a noob with a reading understanding, but haven't really dug into air conditioners much before. Pretty much everything else.

very wild to move the lines of refrigerant, hard is not fleible as the tubes, as for that foam cleaner, it is a garbage, and it is not needed, I am a technician in A / C, you only use a water pressure machine, and If you do not have it, with the hose and a lot of experience is ready, the same is for the front panel. there is also a pink acid that reacts with the aluminum and discharged the dirt, although I think in u.s. It is not sold or at least not without a license. but use pure water and do not waste in vain. Greetings.

N L CLR Mildew and a stiff nylon brush will get every last bit of that off the styrofoam. I clean mine pretty much every year but this year I used CLR= perfect.
