Hi Chris, I have been using chain cleaning machines since 1985 on my mountain bikes and road bikes. After watching you method of cleaning the chain with a scotch brite I will never use any other method. I follow all of your other instructions also. Ordered a Park a Park dummy hub after watching your video. My father has watched every TDF since 1985 and he says you are the best analyst he has ever listed to. He's 86 and hates almost everything but he loves you work. I agree and watch all your cannels. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Your stories are always entertaining..

Oh man, ya gotta love Chris Horner. I would dearly love to hear stories of the Vuelta victory and what it took to win, but the bike washing videos are great. Chris, you are a natural born communicator. Great storytellers are very rare indeed. Seriously, I think he would be worth watching reciting a friggin phone book. Godspeed, buddy.

Use to live in Bend, Oregon, working for the US Forest Service and volunteer as National Ski Patroller at Mt. Bachelor. I clean my bike without water most of the time. Just use clean rags and paper shop towels and alcohol to remove stubborn dirt like brake dust. Use to use brushes, but they seem to hold onto the grease. Keep up the great work at NBCSports for the TDF.

One suggestion, Chris: I find an air compressor essential for blowing out trapped water after the initial clean. So much fluid comes out immediately from the chain rings, cassette, chain, and brakes. 40 psi works, using an air nozzle tip.

I was thinking about this while watching the video. I have a small ArmorAll vacuum I use to clean out my cars and it also has a blower function. I throw on one of the narrow nozzles and it blows all of the trapped water out of the tight spaces

Critical not to force mositure minimize (water) into bearing areas such as wheel bearings and crank bearings. Air compressor air could force this moisture where not needed. I have used leaf blower from distance. Both techniques do speed up drying phase.

Excellent demonstration. I used tri-flow on road, but switched to Boeshield. Seemed to perform a bit better. Since I’m mostly gravel/MTB these days, I’ve gone to the Silca hot wax. After watching their engineering video review, others who have gone to hot wax, I’m sold. The chain drag is amazingly low.

Good video. Love the simple green as well, although Dawn dish soap also does a great job. My other secret weapon in cleaning is Pledge - it leaves a thin waxy coating on the frame that makes dirt come off a lot easier. Plus it makes clear coated carbon pop in the sunshine. Also great for lubing pedals so the cleats glide right in, and of course it doesn't collect dirt or gum up.

Love this guy and his commentaries and knowledge on bike racing! Am a bit confused by this cleaning though: - Throwing carbon rims around might be ok if you are certain there are not even smaller stones on the lawn to mess with your braking surface. Also, why not just put them down gently? - Not sure what the bio-degreaser in that spray bottle is capable of doing, but I would be hesitant to use it loosely aimed around the hub bearings, or any bearings, for that matter. I feel regular dish soap or mild detergent will do the trick, especially if so much physical force with brushes is applied for assistance. - Cleaning the chain vigorously over the big chainring works of course, but the inside of the chain is what I would be most concerned with for functionality - this is where it interconnects with the teeth of the sprockets. Same goes for waxing/greasing, the inside rollers are your key to performance. - For the brake pads, I'd add a quick but close inspection for ingrained sand or tiny rocks, which need pulling out with a needle or such, as to not further scratch brake surfaces unevenly. - For re-greasing pivot points and such, I'd probably go with Balistol. Smells great, and is a purpose formula. I have heard so many mixed things about WD, that I do not feel like using it other than to unstuck really grimey parts. - And lastly, I hope this is an aluminium seat post. Or has anyone here had good experiences clamping down a work stand onto an unsuspecting carbon fibre one? The order of work makes utter sense to me though, get the worst done first (as it will contaminate the rest) - then work over the whole bike.

I think it needs to be said that Chris Horner can only clean his bike so quickly because he cleans/maintains his bike regularly, like a good pro. Lifetimes ago, I worked at a bike shop, and I can say definitively there is no way to do a good and thorough cleaning job with a bike that hasn't been cleaned in…years. Heck, some of the grease/oil/grime/dirt is so caked-on, Simple Green won't do a thing to them; you'll need much stronger stuff, like Finish Line Citrus degreaser.

Tip from me is to wipe down as much as you can with furniture polish, avoiding braking surfaces, drivetrain etc. Makes dirt fall off. You can even do sidewalls of your tyres. When I do a deep clean I use a car wax in the same way. A little attention at that point saves time later.

I went out and bought a brush and those little green sponge things and went at it. The bike looked pretty good for a 20-year-old. Today was the first time I had a chance to ride. Not having a team car following me with a spare bike, I had to push the thing back home after the cassette hub came off and the chain got wedged between the cogs. I think the dirt had been holding it together! LOL!!! The one plus to the story is that I didn't get my hands dirty while I was messing with the chain and trying to figure out what had happened because I had also bought and used that wax chain dressing you recommended.
