How to Clean your Camera Sensor - DIY guide

After receiving many questions regarding sensor cleaning for various cameras (Nikon D3400, D7200, D750, D850, Canon T6i, T7i, SL2, 5D Mark IV, Sony a6500, etc.), I decided to create this relatively quick how-to video. Cleaning any camera sensor is doable and a good step for proper maintenance :). I cover/answer the following:
- Do you need to pay a professional to clean your camera?
- How do you know if your sensor needs to be cleaned?
- What equipment is needed and what techniques are used to clean a sensor?

@@RealWorld Hi. I recently bought second hand d5300(shutter count below 1000). Camera is in mint condition except one tiny detail(sensor is spotless). When I look through viewfinder I see few dust particles. Mirror and outer focusing screen look clean. I'm guessing it's inner side of focusing screen or some dust in pentamirror. It's bit annoying but doesn't have impact on photos. Should I just leave it as it is or send it somewhere for small maintenance? I don't wanna stick my fingers into this matter myself, because knowing my luck I will mess up something

Wow, I've been taking courses on Udemy but your channel has all the basic stuff I need. I have recently purchased a Nikon D5600 and am going to start doing professional photography. Your channel has a lot of great instruction and this camera cleaning video is something I really wanted to learn about that isn't really offered out there. I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next. But, I also love the fact that you are always straight and to the point. Not seeming to mess around to extend the time in your videos and I really appreciate that. Keep up the great work and take care of yourself.

Great instructions on determining if you have dirtied up your sensor. I did the out of focus shot of the blue sky, and did it reveal how much debris I had on the sensor! Some was removed with the air blast, but not all. Tomorrow my sensor cleaning kit arrives, and from this point forward I will follow your protocol when changing lens.

I just a bunch of shots for my review video on the Tamron 18-400 lens when I noticed a couple of spots on resulting images ... dust:). A quick shot of air took care of the issue:).

I have a 28-300mm lens for my FX D800 and it pumps a lot more air and dirt in my camera. I noticed when I used that lens the sensor got dirty real fast, a lot faster than using my 24-70mm lens. Those super zooms seem to dirty a camera up faster to me. I have an LED magnifier that I use. Dirt on your lens cap can transfer dirt from the cap to your lens to your camera too. Wet/Dry swabs is what I use

Great video but...... if you really want to know if there is dust or other contamination on your sensor I suggest you do what I did when I had an issue with my old D40 some years ago. Remove the lens after setting the camera to Bulb mode and making sure it will shoot with no lens attached. Point the camera at a large, mainly white surface such as a painted wall or ceiling (you can do this indoors). Whilst moving the camera body, press and hold the shutter release and make an exposure of about 10 seconds, count to 10 if it helps. Keep the camera moving the whole time during the exposure until you have released the shutter button and heard the shutter close. Quickly place a body cap or lens on the camera. Examine the resulting image on your computer screen. Any contamination will be obvious - anything blurred is probably a mark on your wall or other surface you were pointing at, whereas any distinct shape is something on the sensor. Don't forget that the image is reversed, so dust on the bottom left of your image is actually top right on the sensor. When you think you have the sensor clean, try the above again, just to be sure. In my case it took about 6 or 7 cleaning attempts before I got a spotless sensor, do idea how so much stuff landed on the sensor but once I had given it a thorough clean, to the best of my knowledge (and visibility on the images I've shot), it's stayed clean to this day.

Hi. Between Nikkor 18-200mm and Tamron 18-200mm, which you think is better? Nikkor lens cost almost thrice the Tamron lens and there DxoMark is almost same. Thanks

I have used both:). While the Nikon may have a sliiiiiiight edge, I would lean towards the Tamron and save some money (just my two cents:)). After shooting with the Tamron 18-200, I sold it and purchased a used Nikon 18-200 (I had a great deal on the Nikon). The Nikon felt a bit more solid but I felt that resulting images were very similar.

@RealWorld
@RealWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) In order to achieve a nice/smooth background, you will want a wide open aperture. I might suggest moving into aperture mode and opening the aperture as wide as possible - set the ISO to 100 (or if on auto ISO, the camera may use 100 if you have enough light) and let the camera control the shutter. The 18-55 kit lens will do a decent job but the fixed 35 or fixed 50 will do better as they both open to f/1.8 which is great for portraits (I have videos on both the fixed 35 and fixed 50 which might be of some help).

To really get a thorough view of the dirt in the sensor, it is best to close the aperture all the way down and shoot at a bright continuous surface with the focus completely off and preferably with a low exposure so you can move the camera a bit while shooting. That shot will only show what’s on the sensor. Also, I think you should always have a cleaning solution on your swab, never use it dry.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 3 жыл бұрын
good point regarding the aperture - this will help to spot dust, etc., however be careful with the cleaning solution (not too wet):)

Love your vids. I'm in dire need how to get my raw files of astrophotography viewable on my computer. Tried everything nothing is working.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback Chris!:) Not a problem ... many post editing packages can handle RAW images (like Lightroom, etc.). If you are trying to simply click on the file and view on the screen, your computer will most likely error. RAW files are - RAW and need to be processed:). The beauty of shooting in RAW means you will capture everything the camera's sensor is capable of capturing. This allows you to post process the image(s) in whatever manner you like allowing for loads of creative influence. You can use Adobe's DNG converter (free) to convert your RAW images into DNG (DNG is a generic form of RAW (Digital NeGative)). I created a video using Adobe's Lightroom which discusses and demos the converter ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qteUkqaf0JOqcoE.html ). If all of this sounds like a mess, you might consider shooting in JPEG (after converting/processing your currect RAW files:)).

Chris, I use Irfanview and/or Faststone Image viewer to look at photos on my computer before working on them in Lightroom if needed. Both programs have some basic editing features, as well as the ability to convert into other formats. (And both are free or donation-ware). Also, sometimes in order to see stars captured by the camera I have to zoom them to 50% or higher because the standard ~16% view is too small for the stars to show.

I am looking at the Nikon d3400. Learning about cameras and my questions is regarding the lenses. If my purpose for as a beginner now is for scenery and people . Is the 18 to 55mm lens sufficient or should I get the kit that comes with the 70 to 300mm? I am looking to see what’s economical for me.

Yes, I would stay with the 18-55:). I have the 70-300 but primarily use the 18-55. When your budget allows for another lens, consider going after the fixed 50 or fixed 35 - both are great for portraits in my opinion:).

Many thanks in advance, keep up the great work 🎥🔥 also, do you have an Instagram page where you show off your photography?

Hi, i have a question about the durability of the Nikon d3300. I like to go mountain biking and I would like to bring my camera, would it be okay to place it in my camera bag and then put in in my backpack? Or will the vibration from riding on harder surfaces break my camera ? is it safe or should i avoid that completely ?

Thanks for the post William - sounds like you are set for a great adventure!:) I like the 18-55 kit lens and believe it can do a decent job, however if you want a dedicated wide angle lens to better capture landscapes, you might consider the Sigma 10-20 ( amzn.to/2QQWQ19 ) ... a good/solid/capable lens in my opinion:).

Thanks for the post/question:). Do well or as well as can be expected!:) Unfortunately, macbook air does not support 1080p (a resolution of 1920x1080). The macbook will easily scale down though. I am not certain what version of the desktop you have but I suspect the same might be true although most desktops should not have an issue. Macbook air supports the following: 1440 x 900 (native), 1280 x 800, 1152 x 720, 1024 x 640

I have a question for you? I am thinking about upgrading from my d3200 to d7000. I have bought a couple lenses but they are not dx lenses so with the 3200 I have no autofocus. I have found these lenses are cheaper to pick up and easier to find. Will I miss the difference between the megapixels between the two and will I give up any quality. Thanks for any help with this.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, you stated 'I have bought a couple lenses but they are not dx lenses' ... did you mean they ARE dx lenses?:). DX lenses are less expensive and do not have AF motors. This means you will need a camera body with built-in AF like the 7000 series in order to use AF:). I have both the D3400 and D7000. The 7000 is a beast - relatively heavy compared to the D3200, weather sealed, etc. I used the D7000 for many years with good success. You will drop from 24mp to 16mp but it's not too bad in my opinion unless you plan to create large prints:). I might consider the transition from the D3200 to the D7000 a bit more of a lateral move, although I would definitely feel more confident taking the D7000 into a challenging environment (sand, rain, etc.). The D7200 would be a nice step-up if your budget allows:).

@@RealWorld when I use 50mm prime with c continuous af, this is in video mode not photo. is there a way to have af in video with out using manual focus?
@RealWorld
@RealWorld Жыл бұрын
Ahhhh yes, I have been down this path before:). When I first got the D3400, I attempted to capture video with continuous focus but the focus would constantly hunt and adjust - it was frustrating. I later got my hands on a Canon 80D and the focus was awesome. I realized Canon created a lens to help with silent focus - the STM lens. Soon after, Nikon released their version of a silent focus lens which I later tested and it works well! Any Nikon lens that is designated AF-P is much better suited for continuous auto focus for video IMO:). The standard AF-S will work, but the focus will hunt/adjust and make noises along the way:).
