My Beyerdynamic DT-880 Pro headphones have gotten quite grimy over the last couple years so I decided to revitalize the once-soft velour ear pads by giving them a proper cleaning.

Old video still holds true today. I used a tiny drop of Dawn Platinum soap instead since I only keep Tide Pods on hands (for pod-parties) but this worked perfectly. I almost ordered new earpads from Beyerdynamic for my DT770 Pro set and it would have been $35. This cost me about 10 minutes of time and they feel as soft and fresh as ever. Thanks for the tip! I am so glad I didn't throw these out.

Fun tip: most headphones have a little notch on the plastic part of the earpiece...that's so you can thread the elastic band on the earpiece through it and essentially screw it on. Don't try to stretch it back into place...use that notch!

Hopefully not too much of a douche-moment * fingers-crossed * - Somewhat long - You've been warned. If that part is made of plastic you're buying too cheap stuff. The sound quality can be perfectly adequate and while admittedly I'm a bit harder on my hardware than I'd like - A sturdier yet lightweight metal construction is preferable. At least if you're mainly using them sitting down at the computer. For commuting and moving about and such it's a different story I reckon, but that's not what I'll be talking about. Nor is the scenario in the video unless I was wildly not paying attention (strong possibility ^^) --- Douchebaggery Commences --- If not for breakage due to falling off places then definitely because you will have nowhere near the same risk of material fatigue where one day they just snap - seemingly yet obviously not out of nowhere. Typically at a joint where they can pivot backward and forwards relative to the headband. Similarly, the internal build quality is usually miles better. Meaning you won't crack a soldered connection as easily and that famous If-they're-perfectly-set-on-my-head there's sound and/or mic coming through cleanly syndrome that cheaper ones tend to develop usually right around the warranty expiring is less likely (Curious - I know). All of the above said - I get that not everyone has the money to spend on stuff like this - fair enough. Ask yourself though - Is it smarter to buy a new, cheap pair yearly, bi-annually or even more frequently for xx dollars or your regional equivalent or perhaps you pay 25-50% more for something that lasts you at least 3 years. Often longer. A stand of some description especially if you're using wireless ones as I do is 100% worth it as well :) Those you absolutely don't even have to buy, if you're handy you can probably make one yourself easy as pie. Sturdy base with some weight to it to stabilize it on your desk, yet not too wide, slightly flexible or rigid "stem" (my second language English fails me somewhat here) and a bit sticking out over it all on top. A bit rounded off or perhaps covered with a non-slidey material so it stays snugly on there without wobbling about unnecessarily. A storebought equivalent can have USB-passthrough and RGB and probably some other superfluous bells-and-whistles, but that's just what we in Sweden might call "lull lull". Nifty yet unnecessary for the primary function of it all. Whelp that's my rambling post of the day, I hope. No promises though. If you read it all - Thank you and... I'm sorry? Eh - Not really. Imma just sip my morning tea now and not bother you further. // Some Swedish guy

It works! I tried this with the pads for my DT 770 Pro and not only do they smell pleasant, they're also quite soft again. Drying them out with a cool (or room temp) fan speeds up the process. When the velour pads are wet, they tend to stay wet for a long time. I don't know how they would handle a hair dryer, or heat sources, so try those at your own risk.

Great video! Washed my DT 770 pads the same way. A note of warning to the viewers: don't be too rough while cleaning; the stitches that connect the inner ring started to come off in one of my pads. Guess I'll be sewing those together, but the pads look clean.

Can confirm on my DT990 Pro's that washing and drying cleaned them, had a little problem with (plastic/leather) that succoured to the headphone frame shrunk, a little finger work over the head pads restored them. Also the foam is no longer compressed

A quick question here, is it also okay to dry them on a heater or will that ruin the texture/foam inside? Better to just air dry? The reason I ask is I live in a colder country so air drying can take too long often and lead to worse smells than you started with so whenever I clean stuff I always have to either tumble dry it or dry it on/next to the heater or it will never dry and start to develop bad odour.

At the end of the video, those earpads are cleaned up? Unless I'm missing something they look the lint trap in our dryer. Is that normal? Because my earpads on my headphones are black with lots of white fuzz them. When I bought them, they were black fuzzy earpads. The smart thing to do is to clean them the same way you clean your cloth and cold water if we talk about synthetic materials. Most important is to wash them several times, even let them just take a clean water bath since some products can cause allergic reactions to your skin.
