Keeping your engagement ring clean and looking like the first day you got it is something that can easily be done! By following some simple at home cleaning tips your ring should sparkle at all times.
Once your center-stone, or ring as a whole, gets dirty it can start to lose its beauty and look like something that is lower quality. The only difference is your ring can be cleaned to bring it back to life while a low quality diamond's appearance cannot change no matter how much you clean it. Diamonds, and most gemstones, rely on light traveling in and out of the stone in order to give it sparkle and brilliance. At the same time, diamonds are a sticky substance and they attract oils, lotions, grease etc which can get on its surface and block the light. There are certain activities we recommend not doing with your ring including: physical activities like sports/gym, showering, sleeping and how you take it on or off
There are a lot misconceptions out there on how to clean your ring with some as crazy as ketchup, vodka, toothpaste and others. The best method is to let your ring soak in warm water with dish soap, then take it out and scrub gently with a soft toothbrush. Be sure to clean the underside of the ring as that is where a lot of the dirt can build up and cause light blockage. Once you have cleaned you can do one final soak or pat dry with a micro-fiber cloth and voila!
Finally, if you happen to be in the New York area, our clients are welcomed to by stop the store anytime for a complementary ring cleaning and inspection.

Thank you for this video! 🙏🏽 Warm water + Dawn is what I use. If Dawn is gentle enough to clean oil off baby ducks, it’s gentle enough to clean my diamond jewelry.

I am already using the dish soap warm water method for years. It really works. I use a baby toothbrush to scrub. I dry with a paper towel. I do this once a week.

Got my engagement & wedding band from you guys 2 years ago and It's still so beautiful. Glad I stumbled across this video for cleaning. Since I'm in MA I can't make it into your store ( I wish. ) I had a question about the metal part on the backside of my band. Any suggestions on buffing cloths to bring back the shine and not dullness from wear & tear? Thanks again.

I found this while considering what cleaning solution(s) to get to clean a variety of jewelry that I'm getting in lots to resell. It varies from vintage with older stones, to modern, and some nicer stuff (in one of the lots, that was supposed to be all rhinestone, I pulled out a sterling tennis bracelet that appears to be rose gold plated, with some pretty beautiful and uniform stones - I'd be stunned sideways if they were diamonds. Considering the bracelet composition, I'd think CZ. That tipped me that this was a nicer piece: The clasp was like one I have on a emerald and diamond bracelet). ANYWAY, I'm gonna hold off on buying commercially made jewelry cleaners to use what you suggest, especially with vintage pieces. Thanks for your guidance!

I use a soft toothbrush and baking soda. Sometimes, I use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. Both work well.

I don’t ever take off my ring. I think taking it on and off makes it likely to lose or have it stolen.

It does - but can also get a bit dirtier over time. Some people get a small chain to wear around their neck to reduce the chances of that happening

As a jeweler, first-I always tell people pick ONE safe location to put your ring in no matter how inconvenient it is for you rather you have to run up the stairs or not to go put your ring in that same spot every time it will lessen the chance of it getting lost off your finger (ie: forgetting where you put it for a couple years, your husband throwing it away in a bunch of junk mail, your cat pawing into the garbage- all of these things have happened to customers of mine and more) - second- don’t take it off your finger unless it is for an event like something that will harm it such as moving something heavy (ie going to the gym, moving your house, etc) or going to any water events such the beach or lake - I can’t tell you how many clients have lost their rings boating, or playing in the water some way as your finger contracts then the water pulls it off- or you take it off as to not lose it in the water and it gets lost in the sand- just don’t take it on vacations- or harsh chemicals- like if you’re working with something that you know will legit harm your ring such as cleaning solutions above windex - I find that most people are smart enough to wear gloves which covers the ring. I’m saying all this because every time you take your ring off your increasing the risk to lose it- just like you said. It absolutely is the case, and although hairspray may make your ring dirty and some of these daily chemicals we are around may microscopically damage the gold, it certainly doesn’t compare to the tears of a stolen ring because you took it off at work, or a lost ring because you can’t find it in your own house (and that has happened so many times to clients). So, lessen your chances- wear your ring. Only take it off when necessary and have that one place to put it- then just clean it. And she’s not saying in this video but it’s dawn dish soap that cuts the grease as all diamonds are made of coal and have a layer of oil (grease) on them that attracts dirt and or just buy jewelry cleaner as they are using in their machine. PS don’t ever use an ultra sonic machine on your jewelry it will loosen the stones more than anything else they are talking about and should only be used by the actual jeweler themselves as when the stones start falling out then they can replace or tighten them. Don’t let people do that with your jewelry. I never use them on my jewelry- especially estate pieces- ever.

@@silvergirl7810 You are absolutely right. One place where the ring(s) goes. The only time I've ever "lost" my rings/important bracelet is when I've had my attention divided and put them in an odd place. Also, I do have cats and you have to put them where the cats can't get them. You can't think "Oh, they aren't interested." They can decide they are and who knows where you'll find your engagement ring (if you ever do...). Years ago, I had a few things disappear and actually considered calling the police, as we rented in a building with tenants AND LANDLORDS that changed often. All my pretty semi-precious stuff was disappearing, mostly bracelet and necklaces, things with chains and links. We went to move, and I picked up our cat's little basket with a pillow: And there were all my MIA jewelry items, stashed under his pillow. I guess he liked the slinky feel of them, and the sparkle. He wouldn't give me any details. :) I forgave him and reclaimed my stuff.
