Hello and welcome to another episode of Kelvin's Garage! In this episode, we dig deep (LITERALLY!) and show you how to restore throttle response, horsepower (HP) and fuel efficiency (MPG) by cleaning your throttle body! However, this job is not for the feint of heart and you need to remove a lot of parts to gain access to it. Also, we encounter a few hazards like the initial startup after cleaning and the change in idle speed! Did the throttle body cleaning help to reduce hesitation? Or did it make the Civic run funny? This is a medium-sized job so let's dig in!

DO NOT DO NOT SPRAY DIRECTLY INTO THE THROTTLE BODY‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ this caused the my idle speed sensor to break (attached to throttle body) and i had to replace my whole throttle body. what caused this is the cleaner leaking into the butterfly valve’s horizontal axis destroying the sensor. spray the cleaner onto a rag and wipe away and visible carbon AND AVOID WIPING THE ENDS OF THE BUTTER FLY VALVE’S PIVOTING AXIS (the two ends of the black line with screws in it. obvious signs of you breaking this sensor is: hard shifting in the automatic trim of civic, check engine light stating (idle control system RPM higher than expected), and terrible gas mileage.

My idle states at 800 - 1.000 since my mechanic cleaning the throttle body by fully uninstalled 2 months a go. Before he cleaned the throttle body, the idle state at 600 - 700 Rpms. Now, Even he did already the relearn procedure, the idle keep staying at 800 - 1,000. The gas getting terrible, only 7 - 8 kms per litre. Before was 9 - 10 kms per litre. Any sugestions about this situation? Thank you

@@kharismahepy8136 i’m currently in the process of trying to fix this issue as well. so far i’ve cleaned my map sensor, mass air flow sensor, and replace my whole throttle body. my car runs better, but it’s still idling at 900 rpm and getting 19mpg. however i have not calibrated my tps yet so maybe that will fix it. i will definitely update this thread

@@kharismahepy8136 did he calibrate it with an obd tool? or just the standard unplug the battery procedure. because the honda dealer actually uses a very special obd tool to recalibrate your systems

@@kharismahepy8136 i’ve done the “unplug battery and hold idle at 3000 rpm” 2 times now but it has done nothing

@@kooppoopmax5812 he did it with OBD2 scanner thing. After it didn't work, he following the relearn procedure from this channel and still unsolved. Next time i will try to open and clean my PCV valve, hopefully this will work.

You can use a ratcheting clamp bar (under $10 from harbor freight) that you can change into a spreader bar, to keep the pedal depressed (must safer than a brick). Just wedge it between the pedal and edge of the car seat.

BEFORE disturbing any sensor connectors within the engine bay , please DISconnect first the Negative cable of the battery !

You can't disconnect the negative terminal of the battery because then the Electronic actuator for the throttle body would not be operational , and the throttle body would not open at all

Now I know why I bought a Toyota Corolla! 😂 If you see how easy it is to clean or even remove the throttle body on a Corolla you will want to trade your civic for one! ❤

The Honda service manual very specifically says not to put your fingers in the throttle valve with the ignition turned on as that could result in serious injury...aka losing your fingers.

I will do this and the MAF and hopefully replace the Cat soon. We replaced the valve cover gasket almost 2 weeks ago and should have diminished the oil leak. Was thinking of a CNG version of the Civic with gas prices, etc.

With all the codes and everything and the possibility you might break something, cleaning the throttle body is more trouble than it's worth. The computer compensates for the buildup anyway. I probably won't try this again

I tried to take my airbox off and it ripped. Lol. Once you get this far to where the throttle body is exposed, you're very close to getting it removed. I would recommend trying this. It will let you also clean out a good amount of the intake manifold.

UPDATE!!! I forgot to hit "Clear Trouble Codes" in the video. Even though the check engine light turns off, the computer still stores the codes which is why it was viewable on the app. To clear the trouble codes, you need to connect the OBD reader with the car in the ON position but with the engine OFF then scroll down the page and hit "Clear Trouble Codes". (Debunked false) I believe you can put your Civic in Accessory mode, press the throttle and take the key out while continuing to press down. It'll leave the plate open until you put it back into accessory, where it'll close if the pedal isn't pressed.

I tried that on my 2013 Civic today, and unfortunately it didn't work. The throttle body automatically closes as soon as you take it out of accessory mode. I had to keep the pedal depressed in accessory to keep the valve open. Maybe it stayed open on older models that didn't use drive by wire, I dunno.

@@mikeburston7013 aw, shiet, sorry I didn't correct myself sooner. I cleaned my own throttle body just about a week ago and I realized I had to use a brick 🥴

@@TGerhardt No worries. What you said seems like something that should work, but unfortunately doesn't for whatever reason. I didn't have a brick, and just ended up using an ice brush to depress the pedal (and crossed all my fingers that it didn't slip off, because that would not be good if I got a cleaning rag sandwiched in there). Up here in Canada we don't always have bricks, but we always have ice brushes haha.

The throttle body stepper motor need to be energised to hold the butterfly valve open. If you take off the key, meaning in off position, spring inside the throttle body will close the butterfly valve without counter by the energized motor.

Hey does ur civic idle high when u put it in reverse in the morning? My gfs idles abnormally high in reverse and then the other day she basically described that her throttle stuck in the morning and she had to put it in neutral at an intersection to not keep accellerating. Then it went away. So im gonna clean the throttle body. It has about 110k on it. 06 civic. I was thinking TPS too but I'll clean the TB first and see.. since it isn't throwing codes and only did it in the morning.

No mine does not do that. It could be a lot of things affecting the idle. Try the throttle cleaning and also cleaning the MAP sensor then doing an idle re-learn.

That noise is from the throttle body motor being energised. Turn key to accesories position (II), no engine running. That will allow the butterfly valve open when the gas paddle is depressed & hold.

I noticed you didn't wipe down the inside of the air box or the two other tubes where the air is flowing in. Why not? I could see dirt all inside them as well. I would have wiped everything down inside and out.

As long as it's before the air filter then it doesn't matter much.

Just wondering what is causing my Civic to be an oil burner. Do you think adjusting the valves may help? Scotty talks about adjusting the valves on Hondas. I do notice rattling at low speed and I think it's a valve issue.

I would say try the compression test, at 400k miles your rings may be worn and getting blow by and oil consumption
