Well this has been a learning experience! Turns out if you neglect to check/replace the desiccant packs in the AMS and then don't use the printer for a month that can be a problem. Two rolls of filament became brittle and snapped off inside the AMS. Thanks for the great video, my AMS is back in action! Subscribed!

I found that when inserting a new filament form a spool that has not been used for a while, the 1st few centimeters of the filament is brittle and breaks off in the AMS when feeding. I plan to cut off a chunk from the tip to prevent that from happening.
@3DPrintStuff
@3DPrintStuff Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting observation. Maybe that first few centimeters get exposed to enough heat during the previous print that it become more brittle than the rest of the spool. Or else you'd think the entire spool would age at the same rate or age more rapidly at the outer layer and slower at it's core. Cutting off the tip when loading into the AMS seems like a good idea to avoid some of these failures.

Its happening to all of my old filaments, and I usually try to bend it hard and if it breaks I continue with the process until I get to filament section that is not brittle anymore. Im not sure why this is happening but only first 30-50 cms are super brittle. I printed with P1S with all my 4-5 year old filaments without any issues or blobs. These machines are impressive.

Thanks! They did make it pretty easy. I'd love for it to not be screws but some sort of quick connect fastener to separate the main AMS components from the outer shell. And some longer connection cables would make reconnecting that pcb at the back much easier. But those are small complaints. Overall it's an easy maintenance task.

I think that is we need to be doing this sort of maintenance on the regular, they REAAALLLYYYY need to make it EASIER & SAFER to get to those tubes in the bottom. Those little fine filament wires can't take too much handling and will eventually break. We should be able to just turn it upside down, remove a bottom-panel with just a few "pinch clips" holding it in place - (like the kind on the back of most remotes)... pop the tubes out - clear the jam - then pop the plate back on and keep rockin in only 2 or 3 minutes!! This of course means you could just leave the plate OFF if you wanted as well. That would be SOOOOOO much more convenient! 😮‍💨
@vinnyvdvici

For real! Definitely doesn’t need to be something that has to be taken apart this way. Your design sounds like a brilliant fix for this problem!
@petaldrop256
@petaldrop256 4 ай бұрын
The problem is they were trying to keep it as airtight as they could to keep out moisture from the air. Hence the dessicant but I do agree it would be more convenient to make it easier to get into. But most design points are done for a reason. It is to keep wires from being caught as filament can snake all over at times. But Regular maintenance of AMS will help with many issues. The filament breaking is a common PLA issue. It is not dry it is wet. I run it through a filament dryer for a few hours and it’s better to go. No longer brittle. Do watch out for when the PTFE tubes in the AMS wear out from rubbing filament. It happens most at the entry point to each filament compartment.

After 6 months of printing I got my 3rd filament breakage in the AMS. Usually is because I'm loading a spool with little filament left (-50g) and seems to rip it apart, I've been able to push it with a piece of filament like you did before. My 3rd jam seems to be more serious probably have to take it apart as you did and your video is very helpful, thanks.

If this is happening to you often you might want to consider leaving the 2 screws out of the sub-assembly when you reassemble the AMS. It hasn't had any negative effects on my printing and it means I can tilt the inner subassembly forward without disconnecting the cables to access the tubes whenever I need to.

This is exactly what happened and I can say using the set of printed Bamby tools they have the small wire end remover so you can unplug without yanking on the connector and that helped. Getting them plugged back in.. thats another story. It would be great if Bambu made them more user friendly or perhaps more slack so you can leave then plugged in when doing maintenance..

Can't remember where I saw it but there's a much simpler way. Although it will only work if the filament is stuck in the AMS. Anywhere else you'd need to do the regular checks. Cut off around 60cm of any filament and disconnect the tube attached to the AMS. I found its easier to remove directly from the AMS and insert another one. Now feed in the 60cm filament you have. And continue the unload the filament you inserted will push out any filament stuck in the AMS. I reckon filament shorter than 60cm should work but that was what was recommended in the post.

Thank you. I tried feeding in some old white PLA today and it broke off just like this. Seems that there is a gap between extruder gears and if it breaks just right a piece can get stuck between them in that PTFE tube. It would be nice if they put isomething in the software to clear a break like this where you could just feed a long piece of filament into the back of the AMS without having to take it apart. Should be simple to just reverse all the gears for 20 seconds or so to make sure it all comes out. Hopefully they implement a firmware/software update for this.

Het thanks, I just had this error after only four days of owning the X1C and AMS and I was shocked at first. But then I checked what the error message means and knew it was broken filament somewhere inside. Indeed they could've done a better job at making it accessible. I'm thinking to simply cut a hole in the bottom and print a lid for it because I'd rather not mess with the cables all the time. Those plugs are not meant to go in and out often.
@3DPrintStuff
@3DPrintStuff Жыл бұрын
I had the exact same idea of cutting a hole in the bottom and printing a cover. But since filming this video I found out you don’t actually need to disconnect the cables. You can remove the screws and tilt the inside portion towards you and you can access all the tubes without messing with the tiny electrical connectors.
@MarinusMakesStuff
@MarinusMakesStuff Жыл бұрын
@@3DPrintStuff Ah yeah that's another way. Thanks for mentioning. That should at least give the cables and connectors a longer lifespan. Also, maybe the screws can be replaced with magnets so the solution doesn't require screws anymore. But I think a hole in the bottom would make it even easier because then you don't even have to remove the rolls of filament.

I really wish they made extensions for the connectors at the bottom. PIA to reconnect with large hands. Had to use pliers to put it back.

Yeah me too. I have relatively small hands and it was still a pain. They should just be longer straight from the factory. Maybe a third party needs to sell extension cables to make reassembly way easier.

great video, helped me clear my clog. For those that have wide hands and fingers, those wires are way easier to handle with bend nose tweezers.
@3DPrintStuff
@3DPrintStuff Жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! Tweezers are definitely a good recommendation. I've also found out that you don't actually need to disconnect the cables and can just tilt the internals toward you and clear the jam.

@@3DPrintStuff im too fumbly to manage that. I do wish they had an access panel on the bottom. Might be worth a mod design/challenge.

Yeah it can be pretty annoying to troubleshoot and fix issues that come up. But it’s pretty satisfying when you get it back up and running.

Ditto, very good. I also realized the two screws really are not needed to hold the chassis in place in that tight fitting enclosure. I had issues with the two plugs having ~4" too short of wire due to my big hands/forearms and an enclosure top that cannot be removed. All this could be easily fixed if Bambu moved the LAN cable PCA to the top above the PTFE tube near the cover hinge. de Sr EM Test/MFG Engineer, MS-EET
@3DPrintStuff

Yeah the screws are mostly unnecessary, I've started just leaving them out and have been fine so far. I also found out that the connectors don't need to be disconnected, you can just tilt the inner assembly towards yourself and access all the tubes underneath.

@@3DPrintStuff It was clear filament and I noticed at the end of it, I could see what looked like 1 or 2 small internal "cracks". It prints fine, but the end just easily snapped off when I lifted the roll to insert the desiccants holders I printed off of Printables.

You're welcome. I kinda wish there was a door on the underside that gave you quick access to the tubes so that you didn't have to unscrew anything to clear filament jams... but it really is a fantastic printer and this is a minor complaint.

Thank you for this video. I however have a similar but different issue. The filament is stuck while the spool is in tact. I checked the whole filament path as you showed and it’s empty. However the spool is stuck I cannot pull the filament out of the AMS from the top losing position. The gears have it locked in and I don’t want to keep tugging on it because I am worried I am going to break something. Any ideas?
