When I was living in a married student apartment on campus at NCSTATE way back in the 70's, my wife spilled some dry beans into the sink drain. They swelled up and plugged the drain. The maintenance guys came and dumped cans of lye (NaOH) into the drain with no noticeable effect. Then they poured acid, I think sulfuric acid down the drain. The acid dissolved the beans quickly and opened up the drain. Then they poured several cans of lye down the drain to neutralize the acid...... Proceed with caution if you try it. You could get a violent chemical reaction and get acid in your face....

wow, that is crazy, I can't imagine how the pips withstood that acid attack. By the way, I also went to NC State, graduated in '85.

@@DrivingIntelligence The pipes back then probably were metal and could take the acid for a few minutes. I graduated in 73 with a BS in Chem Eng and spent my career working on nuclear power plants.

@@williamwhite9767 Interesting, I also graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree. I went into construction and ended up in the semiconductor industry, living overseas for several years. Now I do KZfaq! ;)
