Does two coats on each side significantly decrease pinholes? I typically do one hit one each side.. I’ve been wanting to up it to 2 hits but I don’t want to blow through a ton of emulsion/ have to test exposure times again.

Thanks Cam, good vid. Question: How long does your emulsion last? I usually only get quarts due to the fear of it going bad, but have been thinking of going to gallons (I also use presensitized). Also, I usually only do 1 coat on back side of all my screens and that has worked fine for me. I find that doing 1:1 or 2:2 coats affects my exposure time and I’ve never seen any advantage to that. Thanks for the feedback!

That you for the kind words. I have heard pre-sensitized can go bad faster but honestly it has never been a problem here. we go through it so fast, probably because of the 2 and 2. Side note the biggest reason for the 2 on the back is truly just habit. 1 on the back is just as good and saves a bit of emulsion as well. thanks for the comment Eric.

Excellent how-to video. Great info, presented clearly and concisely and with valuable tips along the way. Thanks Cam! I see you put 2 coats one each side and you explained why. But I've seen a few videos by other screen printers who only do one coat on each side. What is the most common number of coats pros apply? Are there downsides to 2 coats on each side?

2 seems to be the standard practice. 2 coats will make a marginally thicker stencil, in some cases you may not want that like when you need the fine details in a halftone, then 1 and 1 may be better suited.

Using the thick edge left too much emulsion on my screen which led to a lot of drips.. i had to redo it with the thin edge… way better results. Your other tips are good tho

Emulsion coating depends on what you want to achieve and how many prints you want to make, there's different ways to coat a screen for example There's 1 over 1 coating 2 over 2 coating or 3 over 2 coating

Screen printing is so hard. I go to buy a screen printer,flash dryer ,screens ink, emulsion, and a $250 exposure unit. I also bought a film outlit printer that was $125 that was wide format. You think id be set right. Btw im 16 and im so limited to buying the supplies. I print out my design(have no clue if its dark enough) and i expose. Turns out i was using wrong emulsion. My screens were ruined so now i got to buy new emulsion, remover, and screens. Im like crying at this point. I get the new stuff and i make one screen that doesnt even let all the ink through. Mean while my mom is screaming at me for trying to wash out the emulsion in the dark in my shower. Now ive spent all this momey and i dont know how to get these screens done right. Its so inconsistent that j cant even get an exposure time. I just want somebody to walk it through and figure out my problems. (Oh and the emulsion expires after 3 months so i am throwinf emulsion down the drain. Is my film not dark enough, do i need a new exposure unit, do i need a power washer, do i need a washout booth, do i need ink remover for plastisol, my screens are 110 and 160, do i need a fancy darkroom, do i actually need defreaser. I cant even get to actual printing cuz my screens don't burn right and i have no clue why and i feel like I've wasted all this time, money, and i don't know what to do.

Dont get frustrated. Learning anything new always requires experimentation, and unfortunately experimentation with supplies costs money. I have been using marukami t9 emulsion with great success try that. With the film you should be able to hold it up to a light and not see through it. Get a gallon of emulsion remover I use easyway supra. That stuff rips the emulsion right off the screen. The shower is a problem becouse you are dumping emulsion down the drain and you will clog your pipes. So wash out in a Tupperware container. And filter the solids out before you dump it down the drain. Just keep pluggin away. Hit me in the comments with one question at a time and I will try to make a video about it.

There are a few technique's in coating a screen, I've found a few cross Techniques, everything has a reason? If there's no given reason, then it should not be performed. here's one; the printing side or the inner part of the screen is the most crucial side, so there for, it should be the first side to get coated. not the back side of the screen. (Reason) It's the side that gets worked the most. Think about it now??

Wrong. The squeegie side hast to be coated last, To push the Emulsion to the outside, where the colors will build up.

Man, I get that you're probably just trying to optimize your keywords and whatever but people need to seriously stop using the word "silk". Screen printing has nothing to do with silk anymore and it's an antiquated, deprecated term.
