I used to dye my fabrics with soy sauce. Its works really great. I discovered it when i was cooking and accidentally i poured the soy sauce on my white clothes. It was very hard to remove the stain 'til i put some stain remover. From that time on if I have some project then I used soy sauce😁

Re: coffee dyed cottons...does the item end up smelling like coffee? Does the coffee dye need a fixative of some sort? Will the dried item leave a stain if it gets wet? And is this coffee dye fairly long lasting? I remember salt being used years ago..yes/no/

There is a slight coffee smell and, if you don't set the fabric, it might a bit when its washed.

Yes, you can wash your clothes the same way. You will find that some of the coffee may wash out so the item might be lighter in colour after washing it.

if I wanted to use coffee to dye wool, would I need to add vinegar or use some other mordant?
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chara: I haven't tried this on wool (not sure if you mean wool fibre or wool fabric), so I can't say for sure. I do know that you should be sure that your wool is completely saturated all the way through with warm water before you try to dye it with the coffee. I don't usually have to do anything else to prepare my fabrics for dyeing or to retain the colour, some of which rinses out when you rinse out the fabric.

This method will only work on 100% natural fibers such as cotton, wool, linen or silk. I don't think it would work on a poly/cotton blend.

I don't think you would see much difference. Coffee or tea dyeing works best on light coloured fabrics like white or cream.

HI Gitanjali: Some of the colour may wash out when you wash the fabric. I haven't tried it on silk, but as it is a natural fibre, it should work. I would suggest that you try it on a small piece to see. Let me know if you do experiment with this. :)

@Chatterboxquilts

It's difficult to get a really dark colour with either coffee or tea dyeing. The more coffee or tea you put in the water and the longer you leave your fabric in the water, the darker will be the fabric afterwards.

@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 6 жыл бұрын
I thought that was a bonus! ;) I haven't quite figured that one out yet, although I don't find that it is that strong and I'm not a coffee drinker. I don't notice that there is as much of a smell if you tea dye instead. have you tried that?
@DollyG15
@DollyG15 6 жыл бұрын
John Carlo, in my experience to remove just about any smell or "neutralize" the smell, I use a spray bottle and mix a 1/2 cup of vinegar and one cup of warm water. Then use the mist setting on the spray bottle and lightly spray the fabric. Let it dry, the vinegar smell will dissipate on its own. I do not use it in the same room that I will be spending my day. Sometime I add 4 drops of vanilla to the mix. I use this on my couches, mattress, pillows(the ones you sleep on), and carpets. Repeat again, and if needed. Once I spray my bed pillows, I sometimes put them on the tumble/low heat setting in the dryer. This dryer method works great on cotton & polyester, but check the labels on your fabric. Vinegar can do many things and it is a natural product. Hope this helps Maitel Mattie Johnson
