This is part 11 in a series of videos where I show you how to harvest your own annual and perennial flower seeds. I love Annual Vinca (also known as Madagascar Periwinkle or Catharanthus roseus) because they are so pretty and are very easy to start from seed. This winter, I will show you how I plant these seeds indoors under my grow lights. Collecting flower seeds and propagating plants is easy and fun!

I live in Central Florida . The vinca grow wild in my yard. I do collect seed so i can plant more. I buy a few other colors so i can mix the colors. The hummingbird moth like them. We do not have many bugs here or butterfly to enjoy them. Thank you for sharing this ❤

I think I asked on a different video but not sure. Sorry if I did lol. The ones harvested too soon - do we just throw those away or will they dry and be viable once cut?

Thanks for the seed saving videos. I’m a relatively new gardener and have found that I really have a special interest in seed saving. I planted a bunch of vinca this year and was shocked at how many seed pods they form, I’m totally set for next year

I had planted 12 vinca plants along the 1 edge of my concrete driveway. Today 11/9/23 I was harvesting some Vinca Seed Pods. I look and see there are at least a thousand vinca seeds on top of my Concrete Driveway. I used a whisk broom and dust pan and swept most of the Vinca Seeds into the dust pan. I’m sure these seeds are mature,as I always do. I will do a test germination. Where I’ll place at least 25 seeds in a moist paper towel and into a Ziplock Bag. I’m lucky that I’ve a bedroom window that faces direct south that has a large area at the bottom of this window. That makes a perfect place to germinate seeds. Now since my wife wants me to grow a lot of different genus’s of flowers some are the same genus but a different variety. I shouldn’t ever have to purchase any more seeds of all my vegetable and flower plants. Unless my wife sees something I don’t have. I’ll definitely have plenty of extra Vinca Seeds to give away to friends,neighbors and friends on our town’s social app. I always grow a lot more plants than I’ll use. I have sold the Plants or Traded for used 2&1/4 or 4 inch plastic pots. Many friends insist on contributing to help pay the cost of materials used. I place that money aside strictly for the cost of growing plants. The purpose of the money I spend on making my own seed starting and potting mixes. I’ve looked at Home Depot and Lowe’s to see what they are selling plants in 4 inch plastic pots. I couldn’t believe many plants in the 4 inch plastic pots. Cost $4.50 or more and most plants were not nearly as nice and established. Gebera Daisy plants in 1 gallon pots go for $15.00 or more. I already gave away 20 well established Gerbera Daisy plants. I sold them for $2.50 each. If they gave me 4 inch plastic pots. It was a $1.00 for each plant. A few of the Gerbera Daisy Plants were already flowering. I purchased 100 Gerbera Seeds off eBay for $13.32 free shipping plus tax . I sowed 50 Gerbera Seeds In Five 4 inch pots. 49 of the seeds germinated. Once these seedlings developed their second set of true leaves. I transplanted the seedlings into individual 4 inch plastic growing pots. I only lost 1 plant. Gerbera Daisies produce flowers up to and beyond 8 months of the year. They are supposedly long lived perennials. That must be divided every other year or so. Where I live in East Central Florida where a frost generally only happens 1 or 2 times in the winter. I cover all frost intolerant perennials with old bed sheets. That I dampen with warm water right before placing on top of these plants. I do this a half hour before the sun rises and remove the bed sheets as soon as the danger of frost passes. Frosts have occurred where I live at 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Where I live in Florida. If a frost is most likely going to happen. It occurs just when the sun comes up and lasts for around 15 to 30 minutes. I keep an eye on the roof of neighbor behind my house In my vegetable garden. I use drip irrigation. If a frost is most likely to occur. I set up 2 oscillating sprinklers and turn them on right before the sun rises. This prevents frost from damaging or killing any of the frost intolerant plants in my vegetable garden. Please excuse the extra long comment. I’m caught up on everything and had thought about your video when I was sweeping up all the Vinca Seeds. I don’t go on Facebook often, I’ll try to make it a point to look up your facebook name. I will happily send you some seeds if you are interested. Something you may not have. You would be under no obligation to send me seeds. I will be looking for nothing in return. I love giving seeds away. Gardening is one my biggest passion. Thanks again for your video on how to harvest Vinca Seeds. I don’t watch much TV. When I do I generally binge watch one of my favorite KZfaq channels. I’ve subscribed and will end up binge watching a lot of your videos.

I collect the tubers up each fall. But sometimes I forget to get all of the tubers up and they usually start coming up in early spring. So I could probably just leave all of them in the ground but I’m afraid a hard frost will take them.

Hi there. What USDA gardening zone are you in? I believe Vinca are hardy in zones 9-11. I live in zone 5b so unfortunately they would not survive here where I live. ♥🌺

I was really stressing out trying to save seeds from my vinca plants. I would see the seed pods, still green. I can see the seed pods had black seeds in them. The next couple days when I checked the seed pods. They had opened and the seeds fell out. There had to be literally thousands of seeds that fell to the ground. I’m glad I finally watched this video. The seed packet said height 10 inches width 24 to 36 inches. My vinca plants are huge. At least 18” tall by 24“” wide. This year was the first year I grew vincas. Some plants have Pink flowers,some plants have white flowers some plants have a pink with a dark pink center flowers.Do the seeds from the white flowered plants grow white flowered plants ? Or will I get plants that each plant has flowers colored just white,or just pink or pink with a dark pink center? I hope you understand what I mean. I’ve never been into growing flowers except for golden guardian marigolds. That their roots kill root knot nematodes. Where I live in Florida root knot nematodes are prevalent. I surround my tomato.eggplant and pepper plants with these marigolds. Otherwise these vegetable/fruiting plants roots get infested with root knot nematodes. Drastically reducing the harvests. The root knot nematodes don’t bother root crops anx most other crops.

I am so happy to hear that you got so many vinca seeds. How exciting! From my experience, the seeds from the white vinca plants just produce white vinca plants, so hopefully yours should as well. It'll be a fun experiment nonetheless Were you able to collect seeds from your marigolds as well? Collecting flower seeds is such a great hobby of mine! ♥🌷

@@budgetgardeningvita I collected at least a pound of the Golden Guardian Marigold Seeds. I gave a lot of them away to friends and my town’s social media app friends. I would happily send you some of these marigold seeds. I don’t know how to securely give you my email addresses. So I can give you my home address and if you want give me your home address. If you know how to do this securely and want some marigold seeds. Let me know. I’m 68 years old and not the best when it comes to electronic devices. I grew for my wife a lot of different genus’s and different varieties of the same genus of flowers this year. I can also send you a lot of different flower seeds and some vegetable seeds that I saved from this year’s late winter planting. Everything I grow are non hybrid plants. That allows me to save their seeds.

But where do you get the seed pod from the plant???
@budgetgardeningvita
@budgetgardeningvita 14 күн бұрын
Great question! After the flowers fade, at the base of where the flower was a seedpod will form. So right now, my Vinca have not formed the seedpods yet, but later this Summer they will. 🏵️☺️
