The technique I use for CPD's, in a community tank, is to have java moss on a piece of wood or stone. I remove the moss after a day or two and place it in a container where any eggs and hatchlings will be safe. I've never had a single CPD survive to adulthood within the community tank but I've successfully raised 100+ fry by removing the spawning moss to a separate container.

I place mop in small container 4-5 inches wide with beads and marbles or small pebbles with mops anchoring. Place in tank overnight. Remove container to grow out container. Babies hatch in about 36 hour and i Remove the mops and container back into parents tank. There are eggs every day. I have hundreds of babies 👶 . I'm filling outdoor ponds with danios and minnows once fry are half adult size.

My son (19) started with one 20g community tank, I just set up a 10g for a pair of Bamboo shrimp and CPD's, and my son already added another 20g, deciding on set up and stocking, and we're thinking of adding another 20g to try some beginner breeding!! I usually put the parents in a tank for a couple of weeks, then take them out to raise the fly. I've never actually colony bread but it does sound like it's worth a try.

I find my own rocks and crystals! Granite, feldspars, greenrocks, dolomite. I make sure the minerals don't leach. Mass rockhounding ! Got a lapadary wet saw for my birthday ! Can't wait to get it fired up 🔥 ! Thanks Alex ! Your the best!

Mass? I was up there one winter. Went walking on the cape cod canal. Picked up a bunch or rocks. Nothing large enough to contribute to erosion. I was looking for ram slates. The rocks there are different than in the south. Lots of granite, but also other types I couldn't identify. I have a tank that's about to be black Rams and 4th generation feeder guppies. I'm going to divide the tank to save the ones I like(long slender black tails) and cull the rest to the Rams. If anyone thinks this is a disaster, let me know. Like... Tank divider bad idea, or too much protein for the Rams, or guppies will over breed even if being culled, or any other bad experiences.

@@-8_8- I've done the same using a Jack Dempse as the disposal source of culled guppies. But Jack is a lot bigger than rams! And the guppies see this happening, and stress dramatically changes their instincts and collors! They might become less attractive, at lest for the rams. Use a divider they can't see through, even then, they can sense things through the water.

I used a small plastic dish with spikey moss in my cpd tank. Pulled dish daily and separated the eggs into my 10 gal shrimp tank. This worked really well

My emerald dwarfs started breeding recently- ive caught 5 babies so far to raise in a separate tank. Rly excited and surprised that they bred successfully in my tank without any intervention

Warning: don't rinse sub-strait in your sink. The sand and clay can clog your pipes. Do it with a hose outside.

Really interested to see how this is going to work. Hope you get a ton of babies. Colony breeding would be so much easier than switching parents or fry out or spawning mops to other tanks. Plus, I really want to see the tank when the plants start growing and filling in. 👍❤👍

I've done this a few times, but never with 9 adults to start...usually a trio and more plants to start, so I already found some babies yesterday, but the adults were really disturbingly good at hunting them down....some more moss or hornwart will likely be needed

I have a bunch of those sponges, the ones NOT in use are always in a jar or tank waiting until I need them...NEVER had a problem without air running, water still circulates until you get ready to hook them up

I have been wanting to breed galaxy since day 1 that I got them. The only thing missing is space (pun intended). I have a bunch of tanks and fluvials rotting somewhere in a corner. Hopefully this summer I will have managed a room in the basement, it will be my work place and a fish room at the same time. My galaxys will have a special plaxe in there

Those little nets are great. My CPD tank is packed with plants but fry don't make it to adults it seems they all get eaten. I think I will need to try to feed a little more when I have fry.

I love those nets...I was skeptical at first, but I use it more than any other net in the fishroom. Also, it may be that you need more coverage from tank bottom to top with vegetation. It's not the sexiest looking thing to scape, but it gives those 2 week to 6 week old fry a chance.

What about taking a piece of plastic canvas and laying it over a portion of the rocks or something like that and making a protected area that eggs can fall through or fry could swim through and not be eaten, but not cover the entire bottom of the tank?

Hey Alex is there a way we can test these inactive sponge filters with out a airline. Because I’ve heard that they could cause spikes left in unfiltering. I still think the sponge 🧽 filter works just maybe at a reduced way. Or maybe it becomes a super filter from aging and just saturating the water 💦 be interesting to see.

just make sure you rinse them before you take them OFF the air supply and and place them in the container, they will be fine...if they are full of mulm

I keep them in a plastic box with the bottom cut out and steel mesh ziptied to replace it. That way eggs fall through and then every couple of days I move them and collect eggs. About 50 growing in a 5gal after a few days of this

I actually did one on ph meter calibration and tds meter calibration :) however I don't know "the best" or even really the top few brands...cheap ones seem to work okay within .25 or so of a point

3 to 6 months depending on food and temp, also room to move and need to swim around help speed up the growth. 78 degree water being ideal

Just flake usually... then 2 weeks prior to spawning I feed live baby brine...babies can eat it also after 2 or 3 weeks...and will eat microorganisms in the tank, the first few weeks

Haha thank you kindly. So it's not so much leaving the plastic core...as it is stealing each sponge ($2.50 total...so divide that by 2) and put an air stone in each little sponge...and they're perfect for a 2.5 or 5 gallon tank sponge filter... I'm just cheap lol and let the plastic run as a bubbler for the old tank

What do you feed the babies ? I tried raising them on vinegar eels and micro worms on a bare tank with sponge filter and they always die really young for me

I take a cup of tank water, and a piece of broccoli. Then leave it in my window for 3 to 6 days...until the water is milky and or starting to look greenish. This is "Infusoria"... the smallest size critters fish will eat, including single cell organisms. That and the fact that the moss I added is from a tank 5 years old- means it will have lots of mysterious critters in it if you just let it sit and no fish are eating the Industrial or tiny critters. Usually the tank can feed the fry for the first 4 or 5 days, then I use vinegar eels, or microworms / baby Brine Shrimp

@@BrolyRucci no, it's not the bare bottom if they are separated from parents. At least not for me. I do lose some of mine, but I think I'm losing them to runners, no bodies. I use a combination of green water and powdered staple. Powdered staple must be crushed by hand. Nothing magic really. I have mung problems. Mung builds up, remove it to specimen container, specimen container now full of fry. Tried three methods to remove it, but I always end up with fry where I don't want them. Kind of like my guppies...

Do you get much stratification of temperatures in your filterless tanks with fish? I have a shrimp only tank without air or filters and I've just measured the surface temperature at 79F/26C and the temperature on the gravel at 71F/21C. It still seems strange to put my hand in the tank and feel it getting colder as it gets deeper, this difference occurs in only 12 inches depth. The temperature gradient makes no difference to the shrimps behavior and my plants have leaves at the surface 5C warmer than their roots. Nice video.

What is the temperature of the room the tank is in? I would guess that the gradient temperature is due to the lighting above being warmer than the room but the heat doesn't transfer to the bottom of the tank.

@@jordanbabcock9349The room is about 20C/68F. The lighting does not have much affect, it is above a lid I have on the tank. I have a heater vertically in the corner of the tank and because there is practically no flow the water stratifies. I have vallisinarea growing up and halfway across the surface and it is totally still. It's not a tank full of action, if I sit the other side of the room I can't see the shrimp and it looks more like a picture than a fish tank.

Yes that will occur unless enough heat difference occurs that it convection stirs it up...or swimming fish do. But just like a small lake...the top of the water column can be 10bor 20 degrees warmer than a meter or two down

The bigger rocks does seem like a good idea. Perhaps I'm not overfeeding my cpds enough though. Idk. I have a tempered hand because it seems like m praecox respond poorly to overfeeding. Not water conditions, like too much protein I think. Anyone else notice praecox catch things like dropsy pretty easily?

@@Fishtory didn't see that one, I'll look. I love these fish, though I hard a hard time acclimating to their needs. Sometimes it's the hobbyist that needs acclimation. I mean I thought I knew my shit, thought I did my research. Still lost them. And once one of them got it... It was bad. Ended with two babies, now saleable, and one male. A lot like failure. He was alone for a few months, babies in a different tank with some platies. All three survived. So I bought two more females. I don't know if I've ever seen a fish look that happy as when he was guarding the bags the females were in during acclimation. Hard to quantify why it looked like happiness. Something in the swimming, and then swimming up to the front of the tank and then back to the bags repeatedly.

Live and learn...or sometimes we just scratch our heads and say "WTF?!" When fish do odd things. I think as long as you feed live food you can avoid overfeeding generally (blood worms, will cause some fish to die from eating too many ...but other than that). But it's hard to have live food ready all the time

My cpds are in a no filter tank with tons of plants. No heater. I wouldn't introduce scuds into any tank that you want to breed egglayers in. I have found that scuds will eat eggs. Ostracods are my go-to.

Just noticed this In the spam bin for some ridiculous reason lol (stupid google).... but that observation of the scuds is a really interesting one! Thank you. I see them eating their own cocoon and exoskeleton sheds (which I always thought resembled eggs of other fish)... but now I'm wondering if what I saw was them eating eggs also? Now I'll have to look into scud diets and species ( there are several kinds in the hobby for sure) haha

@@Fishtory They sure are fickle aren't they...the things they let go through & the things they list as spam? The scuds I have can literally erase green hair algae & plants in a couple days. Mine eat everything & I mean truly anything edible. From plants & algae to veggies and fish food, eggs, & dead fish. It is amazing to watch the process. I also have saltwater amphipods that eat not only algae but also zoanthids, saltwater mushrooms and various other sessile iinvertebrates. I keep them on purpose to study and they act like an urban family. Each has their own residence and common places they travel & interact. Quite interesting & entertaining.
