Learning how to write vocal melody can be a tough part of the songwriting process. Not only do we want to learn how to come up with an original melody, but also how to write GOOD vocal melodies. I have a method to share today, that just might be the ultimate vocal melody hack. I call the technique, "Melody Maximizer." This is something I started doing to come up with melodies for songs a while, and I'm pumped to share this workflow with you in this vocal melody tutorial. As I say in the video, I'm convinced this method will turn you into a human vocal melody generator!
To make a vocal melody for a song, I think it's easiest to write vocal melody over chords. Sometimes melody ideas can just come to you on their own, but often it's easiest to "draw them out" with some music already going. So to find vocal melodies quickly, spend your time dialing in an "initial vibe." This is that first piece of music you make, with your instrument or inside a DAW. For the melody maximizer to work its magic, I suggest you really spend time getting some music going that you REALLY dig. Don't rush through this. If the music you have going doesn't really inspire you to write anything... then how are you supposed to make good vocal melodies? It's way easier to write singing melody if what you have to write TO is super dope to you.
I hope this songwriter / producer tutorial is helpful, I tried to pack it full with some of my best vocal melody tips!
- Nathan

You’re not alone! This “resistance” comes with creating things. What’s cool is YOU have control over both voices… it’ll take some practice, but over time you can turn down the volume on your inner critic the more you play, have fun and just get back to just plain enjoying this music thing that has always had a special place in your heart 👊🏻⚔️🛡️

I'm a music teacher, and I'm always encouraging my students (and myself) to make music and write songs for nobody but themselves. My classical training has given me so many wonderful aspects of my identity as a singer, composer, and arranger, but I've struggled to translate some of those theoretical bits and bobs into a song-writing process that's accessible for everyone. You are my new favourite resource for songwriting. Love the clear explanations, the natural process that unfolds, and the vulnerability you encourage in just messing around and embracing the content. Honestly, cannot wait to explore your channel more. You're on to something, man. Thanks for sharing! X

Question for the music teacher in you, 7:20 he talks about categories of melodies, or shapes and pathways of melodies. Which part of learning music theory would help with creating and arranging these melodies? Is it called arrangement? Total newbie question 😅

You are great at explaining things man. I've been making beats and samples as a hobby for almost a decade now, watching beat tutorials since guys with white boards were explaining what leases were. Which part in your honest opinion tells a story verse or chorus and also according to what sky jordxn said about his jack on song structure why the chorus gives you the story or why does the hook aka the chorus gives you the story according to his KZfaq video on vocal melody hack how to structure a song 🎵 song structure formula and also according to what 12tone said about the anatomy of a song for his song structure video why the chorus it often tells a short, abstract version of the story, but the verse they tell the actual story?

Yes, I'd agree that generally the verses contain more detail and the chorus is more of that broad "sum-up." They both further and tell the story in different ways, just like a bridge or pre chorus. All these parts help convey the story lyrically and musically. Fun stuff! What does sum up mean for music Nathan?
@NathanEswine
@NathanEswine Жыл бұрын
For me, I'll use the phrase "sum-up" when referring to one of the jobs the chorus has. Generally, the chorus quite literally "sums up" the feeling, concept and point of the whole song.
@PullbacktheCurtain
@PullbacktheCurtain Жыл бұрын
@@NathanEswine what Jonathan Byrd said about sum up was that Sum up means when you say everything again in a short way. Like at the end of Star Wars, you could sum up by saying, “it was a struggle but the Jedi won.”

What's the software you are using?

EASY WAY FOR ME-- step one- read some fiction that has a character who writes songs in it OR search up the lyrics to a song that you haven't heard before step two- read the lyrics included. your brain will often come up with a melody to fit it step three- use the melody and change the lyrics, because technically it came from your head so its an original melody edit- obviously use a different format for the lyrics or it will seem as though you copied

Hey man! Appreciate that. It'll come out early 2023, I'm going to turn it into a finished song and make videos through that process teaching how I do each step. Stay tuned and have a great new year!

When you were recording gibberish, were you saying real words? It was really good
@NathanEswine
@NathanEswine Жыл бұрын
Awesome question Keana! So, yes and no 🤣. No- because I'm not actively thinking about singing real words and forming sentences... but yes- because I'm singing things that SOUND like they could be words, through phonetics, syllables, tonality, etc. So during the process, sometimes a concrete word or phrase will in fact slip out! Best 👊🏻

Could you recommend the autotune that you use? is it free? and can it wrok in reaper DAW?
@NathanEswine
@NathanEswine Жыл бұрын
In this tutorial I used "Antares Auto-Tune." It WILL work in Reaper, but it is not free. I believe Reaper comes with its own Auto-Tune plugin though... called ReaTune? Have you messed with that? 👊🏻

7:29 regarding the timestamp portion of video, you're singing gibberish and labeling them in your head as different patterns. Does anybody know what part of music theory this actually is? And which part of learning music theory will help with finding, labeling and arranging vocal melodies?

Like in the video, I'm not deep in music theory - but curious if anyone does know though! 👊🏻
