How to Complete Your PMP Application in 2023! (Follow Along)

Follow Along description examples
One of the biggest questions students have about the PMP exam is how to complete the application form. The reason is because the form could be rather long and arduous to complete if you are not aware of what is required.
My suggestion is keeping it simple and using the recommended PMI format. Do not use an essay format as this could throw off the reviewer!
Use this
IN - initiating
PL - planning
EX - executing
MC - monitoring and controlling
CL - closing
Project Description
I - Developed the project charter with the project sponsor and identified stakeholders with the core team. Held kick-off meetings with stakeholders and presented the project charter for buy-in at higher levels. Created and maintained a stakeholder register.
PL - Developed the project management plan components with the team. Built the schedule, WBS, cost baseline, quality plans, communication plans, risk plans, procurement plans and stakeholder engagement plans.
EX - Conducted team meetings and directed the project work while managing the developers on the project. Ensured all issues were identified and tracked. Engaged risk owners and action owners to execute planned responses. Inspired, motivated and mentored team members. Maintained an impediment log and was responsible to impediment resolution with stakeholders.
MC - Created and maintained regulatory reports for the project. Created and distributed work performance reports to stakeholders on a weekly basis. Monitored the project and reviewed reports while taking corrective action, preventive action and following through with defect repair change requests and updates.
CL - Closed out each phase on the project while conducting phase-end reviews and submitted phase closeout repots to stakeholders. Also closed out the entire project by presenting a final report and transitioning the deliverable to the customer.
OUTCOME: Delivered on time, and on budget. The customer has implemented the solution and the entire project was a success.
Be sure to stay clear of any esoteric, obtuse, or hard to understand language. Also steer clear of abbreviations and acronyms as this could throw off the reviewer and you may get notice !!
Keep the application to project management and nothing else! For example I coded and tested as a description is unacceptable! The reason is this is technical work and has nothing to do with the actual management of the project. If you have any questions please! Best wishes

Thank you for your content! Im filling in my application now. Im wondering if my experience in event planning will count. It was a job i held for a university planning all aspects of a national case competition. Did all aspects of the planning myself: sponsors, marketing, budget, evaluations, etc. Do you think it will count towards experience?

Oh man, thank you for the refresh! Excellent video...this has helped my mindset immensely as I was formally trained in PMBOK 5 back in 2013 and just getting to the point of application prep (long story). My graduate university is Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC) accredited, so the experience leading projects requirement is only 2 years??? Any validity to that? Thank you.

Thanks so much for putting this together. Great stuff. I have a question I did CAPM in 2013 and it expired in 2018, can use it as my professional education even while it's expired or do I need to first renew it before it can fly for a successful registration? And how do I go about renewing it if its necessary. Thank you

That is a brilliant question! Best ask PMI directly via customer support. I am not sure. Knowing PMI....it could be either. Sometimes they are forgiving. I renewed my CAPM last year.

Great video! I have a question. Can I list just one project experience with a company I consulted for about 6 years ago and I was a project manager / Coordinator on the project? The project lasted for about 2 years. I only need 24 months of experience because I have a bachelor’s degree.

Thanks Ola. Please note, you need 3 years of experience. Only 2 years - if you went to a GLOBALLY ACREDITED COLLEGE registered with PMI as such. Other than that, the experience content sounds fine but the duration is not.

Hello, Thanks for the video! I have a question on adding Project description. If someone works till may be initiation and planning phase in one of the projects and on the other hand only contributed in Delivery phase of the project in another project. Then such experiences are also can be considered for the PMP? or PMP need project managers to be active in all phases of the project. KR, R

Hey there! You could have just initiating and planning experience in some projects and then executing, monitoring and controlling and closing in others. PROJECT A - INITIATING PROJECT B - CLOSING PROJECT C - EXECUTING & MONITORING AND CONTROLLING PROJECT D - PLANNING PROJECT E - INITIATING No problem with this! Does that help?

Hey , Thank you for posting the video. I am doubt about my fulfillment PMP application.I am working in the service industry, where I provide engineering support to a multinational manufacturing company from their location. Q1: Should I write my employer's name or the name of the company where I conducted the project? Q2: I am working on 5 to 6 programs for different vehicle launches; should I mention all or one? Q3: My projects are 2-3 years in development; is it fine to have 1-2 projects to show 3 years of project experience?

😔 sorry this is coming a little bit later than you me at needed it. Write the name of the company that hired you. Do not write the customer. 😁 PMI want you to write down all the projects that you worked on. They do not want you to group any into programs. 🤠 Projects of up to three years are fine. There is absolutely nothing wrong if that is how long the project really did take.

I have an idea of how I would phrase a project on the application. I work as an insurance adjuster and claims are the projects, but like you said I can't list 120-130 claims. I would list one claim load as a project. So 120x$25,000=$3000000 project. My question is does my experience count? How old can the experience be? Also what's the least amount of members of a team you can select on an application?

For the PMP certification, the experience you have leading and directing projects counts. If you are using the claim load as a representation of a project, then managing the process, resources, stakeholders, etc., associated with that claim load would be applicable. However, note that for the PMP, there's a requirement for a specific number of hours of project management experience, depending on your educational background. If you're counting the claim load as one project, you'll need to determine how many hours you spent managing that project. Just multiply by a factor of claims to get the hours for each load. Age of Experience: For the PMP certification, your project management experience must have been gained within the last 8 years prior to your application submission. Team Members: The PMP doesn't specify a minimum number of team members for a project to qualify. What's essential is that you were leading and directing the project. Even if you managed a small team (or even if you were the only person on the "team" but were managing various aspects of the project), it could potentially qualify. However, the size and complexity of the project, and your role in it, would likely be factors in how an application reviewer might assess the experience. Does that help?

hi as you entered acadmic education years 2014 to 2018 & project experience 2016 to 2019. so experience here is countable as it overlapping with acadmic duration .....i am also having same doubt for my exp

Good point. Overlapping education and work experience? It is not unrealistic! That's not a problem. If it is what it is, it is what it is. I hope your application sails through!

I spent 6 hours on my application, followed this advice to a T, got "randomly" selected for an audit, and my application was rejected.

I am sorry to hear that but something must have been off. What did they tell you the reason was? Audits are usually for PROOF of what you documented. You really do not need to include that but for Outcome if you do put one, say: OUTCOME: Left company before project completion

You have 365 days remaining to submit payment, pass the panel review, and schedule and take your exam. Eligibility Start Date : September 2022 - Eligibility Expiration Date : September 2023 .
