@@mjanjo.com254 I skipped throught the video again. There is absolutely no information that would help a new user of Handbrake to find the best speed/quality setting. The video just goes throught the UI and reads out loud the tooltips. To summarize the 10 minute video: use default settings, read tooltips, if you want to tune the conversion: have fun to figure it out yourself. He didn't even say basics like how much do different presets impact speed & quality. In contrary, about resolution he says: lower = less space. Like it would not impact quality at all. Or that increasing resolution does not improve quality. I think the only time when he talks about image quality is when he says: 'the slider controls quality, left lower quality, right higher quality'

I needed to take a 230 MB (2 minute) video and shrink it down to be able to send it to an insurance company BECAUSE they (Allstate) would accept the video from "Google drive"; they claimed it was third party. This software allowed me to bring it down to 14 MB and therefore accepted. I used the presets you suggested and increase the setting "slower" under the video tab. Worked great!!

It might be worth noting that if you want to speed up the encoding process you'll want a beefy GPU, especially if you really want a great compression with high quality fast, such as slowest encoder preset with 25 constant quality. Consider sending large video files to someone you can trust who has a stronger GPU for the compression. of course Video Encoder play's a huge roll in speed and precision but I'd recommend H.264 NVEnc as its fastest out of all H.264s and universally most supported unlike it's cousin H.265. As an almost daily user of this powerful software I am happy it reduced my 120GB footage into 15Gbs

It also depends on what the video style is whether you choose x264 or x265. x265 is great for higher definition video files like 1080p or above. If it's a smaller file, grainy or high motion - x264 might be a better option as x265 uses bigger blocks of compression so may look more pixelated than x264 on smaller resolutions. One thing you have to watch with Handbrake is that you add all available audio tracks as it doesn't always do that - Especially for music orientated videos (like concerts). There's so many settings in handbrake I always forget about the preview option!

True, x265 is more intended for 4k resolulution. For lower resolutions, the quality may vastly vary and sometimes be really not that great, though the file size is usually way smaller. And, as mentionned in the video, compatibility can with devices/services can also be an issue.
@peterschmidt9942
@peterschmidt9942 Жыл бұрын
@@jeromemorin9352 X265 isn't intended for lower than 4K, but generally works just as well. It's better if you're starting from a higher res format to begin with. For example your converting from 4K to 1080p x265 or lower. The file sizes can be smaller than something converted from 1080p to 720p x265 because of the efficiency. As for compatibility, lots of devices have the ability to play x265 these days. If you have an older TV it might be an issue.
@AbsurdScandal
@AbsurdScandal Жыл бұрын
@@peterschmidt9942 Wait, so if the source file is 720p and I want to keep the quality at 720p, would the compressed file preserve the 720p quality if I use x265? Or would x264 be better for preserving it?
@peterschmidt9942
@peterschmidt9942 Жыл бұрын
@@AbsurdScandal Regardless of what compression you use, you're still going to have 720p resolution. However the resultant video file may look better depending which one you use and what the source is. You need to try both and decide for yourself which looks better. You tend to find if you use a higher quality source like 1080p or 4K to 720p using x265 will give better compression than if you just used 720p source and used x265.

I've used handbrake for many years now. I'm glad to see they've finally updated the interface to make it easier to use without so much need to keep going into settings. Great video. However, I do feel more acknowledgement that most setting that result in smaller file sizes will typically also reduce the video quality (although these days perhaps not as dramatically as in the past) would be helpful. Also that video encoding is a resource intensive task... and large files can take quite a bit of time. And, running HB may impact performance of the machine and it's availability for other tasks while encoding is occurring, especially if using CPU encoding.

so with the main difference on the software and Graphics Card Encoding - Software uses you're CPU and takes longer to compress your videos, but it can get smaller and better video quality, but keeping track of all the settings is the most important part - Graphics Card Compression is fast and does a good job, but it can be iffy due to how fast everything compresses. My usual settings is on Software and I can get videos about half the size of the Graphics settings, sometimes 1/3 the size, usually it depends. I hope this helps.

I could not believe my eyes but when I done a side by side comparison, I was beyond impressed of how much quality the 9MB version still retained. I mean, 90MB vs 9MB...come on!..... The only one flaw, I found was the audio was around the 50ms mark ahead of the video when played on Win Media Player & Win Movies & TV player, everywhere else plays perfect. Thanks again Kevin.

I did a lot of testing and the encoder is very weird. Slower settings take longer, but interestingly, they have more detail and larger filesize (it really depends, fast and faster are basically the same but superslow is around 10% bigger than slow). It is a triangle: quality, time, size, but every setting changes everything a bit. I found that for 1080p i cannot differentiate between CQ around 24 and 20, the best sw encoder is fast (AMD VCE for some reason generates really big file sizes for me, it is some bug probably).

you set your CQ to 20-23 IF YOUR "SOURCE" VIDEO IS IN HD AND 18-20 IF IT IS IN SD.. to achieve a good quality (almost same as source video} conversion. IT'S NOT BECAUSE YOU WANT YOUR CONVERT TO BE IN HD. if your "SOURCE" is in HD it means you have a good quality source and since its in good quality already you can just set it to 20-23. for an SD source, which has a fair quality, you realy need to go to 18-20 to achieve good quality. the smaller CQ, the better quality you get but bigger file size.

Another great video Kevin without the bla, bla, bla. Everyone (including myself) has moved along to the latest tech (we can currently afford) when dealing with video but I also have many requests from friends and family to capture and archive standard home video such as VHS, 8mm, and even DV tape in some cases and I'd like to know what the best ways are to get the best results form these limited sources. Any ideas?
