There are many cheap Chinese-made variable frequency drive's (VFD's) on Amazon and eBay. Most reviews mention how intimidating or confusing programming these can be and often return them. Programming them is simple and easy once you know how to do it. In this video, I show you how to program these import VFD's and get them to work correctly. I hope you find this useful.

Thanks for posting Robert. Not many videos explaining these drives for uses other than CNC spindles. Happy milling!

You win !!! The best explanation of code issues I had programming the device. The 60 hz is key. Thank you very much...

Have this same VFD. Great video, thank you. Trying to power a General 350 3 Phase table saw, but not having any luck getting power to the motor at all. Really don't want to have to throw in the towel here as the saw is mint.

I can think of a couple things that might keep it from sending power to the motor. Maybe one of these will help. First, and I'm sure you've done this, make sure the motor is wired fro 230v and not 460v and that the T1, T2 and T3 connections are right on the VFD. Second, double check the safety switch settings for pins x1, x2 and x3. Make sure none of those are configured as a stop or safety switch. Those will keep it from sending power to the motor. Third, double check the setting for vfd control. Make sure it's set to the panel and not to remote. If that happens, it will look at pins x4 and x5 for control and disregard the panel inputs. I'm sure there are other settings that could impact it, too. Mostly, check what the programmable pins are doing, check to make sure it has panel control (and not remote) and double check the motor configuration.

Thanks for making this awesome video! I was wondering what setting needs to be changed to use a different potentiometer. I got it hooked up but I can only control the speed from the vfd. Thank you!

Thanks! This is timely. Are the parameter numbers similar for most of the Shenzhen VFDs? I bought an Automation Direct for my Wells-Index mill and the voluminous manual reads like it was written by an English teacher. About to buy another from them for the table power feed motor on the mill. I just bought a 3 horsepower 3 phase lathe that has an ENC VFD. I found a manual on their website but OMG, the translation is so bad that I'm not sure what they're describing as the parameter descriptions. The ENC is set up very nicely with a reverse switch, E-Stop and speed pot but at the first glitch it will be replaced with something that I KNOW has an intelligible manual.

I took a look at the two manuals and the P-codes are different between the two VFD's I have. The ranges are same, so the 000X codes are setup for the VFD on both machines but what the parameters configure is different. I'll take a look a the badly translated one and see if I can make heads-or-tails of it, if you'd like two brains on it.

Thank you so much for the video. After watching it, the printed manual makes a bit of sense. (I have the same VFD). I’ll probably have to watch this video a couple of times to be 100% clear. I am going to this VFD for my Delta Unisaw (table saw). It has a 3-phase motor and runs on 220 volts. (I have 220 Volt in my home garage/workshop that’s why I am using this VFD. I have two questions. 1- The table saw has its own magnetic on/off switch! Would it be ok to use this VFD, considering the magnetic switch? 2- It seems that you have hard-wired your mill directly to the VFD, but I have installed a 3-phase, 220-volt surfaced mounted plug, which I will use, like any other electrical machinery for my saw. The only difference is that the supplied power to this plug comes from the VFD. Do you think it is ok? Many thanks.

I don't think the magnetic switch would be a problem with the VFD provided it is used to power the VFD and sits on the line side. I don't think you'd have a problem using a machine plug between the VFD and the motor. It'd have to be for T1/T2/T3 and you wouldn't be able to power it without the VFD. Essentially, you'd have a movable machine but one that wouldn't function unless it were plugged back into the load side of the VFD. All should work, I think.

I have the same VFD, it looks the same and the manual looks the same. I figured out the manual and got it working for my drill press. I've got two questions - 1. Do you have low torque/power at low RPM and how did you fix that? 2. The emergency stop switch on the wall - how did you wire and program it to work? I've not been able to get mine working.

Here's a video where I show more of the installation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ocpkmcqK1bTNg4U.html I did not have problems with low speed torque but I'm using the step pulleys in conjunction with the VFD which lets me slow down the spindle while maintaining torque. I wonder if changing the VFD profile (percentages at RPM) would help? I was never able to get the safety stop switch to work. I had it wired I not pin X1 and COM and programmed correctly but it never worked. I tried several of the other programs on those pins to see if any other functions worked, but none did. I cam to the conclusion that the programmable pins don't work. I suspect there is a software issue where the pins aren't polled correctly. I ended up pulling the VFD off and swapping it for a different one, the AT1. I kept the VFD and will use it on my surface grinder which has it's own shutoff switches. So yeah, not great. Check out the video I linked above if you have time. At the end of it, I talk about the problems with the programmable pins.

@@RobertAdairWorkshop Thank you for responding! I do have exactly the same VFD you started with. I also have tried all the same things. Betting the only way to get a safety stop to work is use the full external control button setup. The manual has a lot of undocumented settings; you and I both wish we knew what they were for! If I can solve the problems I'll be sure to let you know!

Do you have any comments on how to choose which Chinese VFD to buy?
@RobertAdairWorkshop
@RobertAdairWorkshop Жыл бұрын
There's really only a couple of things you can look at. The Chinese manufacturers don't publish much in the way of specs. I've chosen them based on motor size. I usually go 3-times the motor size I'm using. So for a 1HP motor, I use the 3HP vfd. Some of the VFD's accept 120V single phase and some, 240v single phase. Keep that in mind. You'll want to choose one that aligns with your supply voltage. Most 3-phase motors are 240v or higher, though, so it'll likely be based on that. I've used two different models with good luck from both: The AT-series (AT1) and this YL600 series. You'll find many different "brand" names for these but they are typically all the same specs/manufactuers.

I have a ASY AT1 inverter and a single phase motor, and my grinder is already fabricated. Can I make these work together? I found instructions online but for this configuration it specifies “AT2”. I’m really confused at the moment 😂
@RobertAdairWorkshop
@RobertAdairWorkshop 2 ай бұрын
You'll need a 3-phase motor for the AT1. It takes in single-phase power and spits out three-phase power. The AT2 looks like it does single-phase power in, single phase power out. It also notes its for 220/240V so your 1-phase motor needs to be made for 208/220/240V. As an aside, 3-phase 240v motors are considerably cheaper and more readily available than 120v single phase. You might be able to get a 3-phase motor cheaper than that AT2 VFD.

I don’t know how. The manual doesn’t say anything about it. Mine is connected to the main switch and shuts off with the machine.

Bought 3 yrs a ago. Immediately the manual was garbage, That parameter page is completely black ( redacted) Ran it as shipped, for nearly 3 yrs, no power, motor cogs at low rpm, limited speed control. But usable Watched this a few wks ago and now just flashing numbers beginning with P or randomly push buttons and F something flashing. @ 2:25 "Select program" @ 2:25 " in the US its 60hz" IDK press a random button? My keypad layout is slightly different.
I bought the cheapest VFD on Ebay. Wire it, Program it, Test it.
