Please help, i have a scarlett 2i2 and apple lightning to USB 3 adapter connected to a powerbrick and the iPad (5th generation, iOS 13.2.3 ) still says “Cannot use accessory: Scarlett 2i2 USB: this accessory requires too much power”. The setup works on my iPhone 7 iOS 13.2.3 so i know that i am not doing anything wrong. I just want to use the iPad cause it has a larger screen. Thank you so much.

Hey there. I would highly recommend a powered USB hub in this situation as it will provide much more reliable power and work with any iOS device, as it won’t drain any of the power from your iPhone or iPad.

SOLVED: Just use a powerbrick strong enough to power the iPad such as the iPad’s original powerbrick. (When I had the problem, turns out I was still using the iPhone’s powerbrick for the iPad, my bad)

Hi Pete. Great video. A good audio interface to consider if you want to avoid the lightning connection issues is the Focusrite iTrack Solo. It comes with a lightning cable, so you can just plug and play. I picked mine up 2nd hand, boxed and barely used for about the same price as the usb to lightning adapter you’re using in the vid. It doesn’t draw power from the iPad, so you do need to connect it to a usb power source.
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Nice one! Thanks for the recommendation. I have seen the iTrack Solo around the place and often wondered if it was a good option since it supports iOS out of the box. So it has two separate connections, one for power and one for data?
@SMBorthwick
@SMBorthwick 4 жыл бұрын
@@PeteJohnsMusic Yes. It has a usb power supply which I just plug in to an Apple charger. The Lightning cable has a proprietary connector to the device which probably won’t work with anything else. The interface can apparently work with Mac or PC if you download the appropriate driver, although I’ve never tried it. Other than that, it’s pretty standard. Two inputs with separate gain stages (mic and jack), phantom power, direct headphone monitor and two line outs for monitors. I’ve never used anything else, so I don’t know how it compares to other devices, but it’s working fine for me.

Beautiful! Thanks for the extra info. Looks like a really solid option for those wanting an "out of the box" solution but wanting something more solid than the iRig range.

I would love to see a comparison between the iTrack Solo and the Scarlet Solo as those are the two I’ve narrowed my search to. I asked a KZfaq reviewer if the iTrack and she said Scarlet will produce a bit better sound.
@SMBorthwick
@SMBorthwick 4 жыл бұрын
@@PeteJake100 I’m not sure anyone could say that unequivocally unless they had tried both or studied the components list. For me, the iTrack Solo was an easy choice because I didn’t need an extra camera kit to get connected. I tend to think along the lines of the fewer additional connections in the signal path the better.

You don’t need a hub. You can just use your charger that comes with your iPad. If you’re recording acoustic guitars with CONDENDER mics the FOCUSRITE has 48 volt phantom power. Your acoustic guitar ,and vocals will sound ten times better using a condenser mics. Why does EVERYONE say to use a hub. Use your regular iPad charger.
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there. It depends on the audio interface generally. Some will work fine with just the charger plugged in however some tend to use an inconsistent amount of power and need the powered hub. If you have an interface that gets enough power form the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter then you’re good to go. But folks who get the “this device uses too much power” message will need to simply add a hub to their setup. studiolivetoday.com/usb

Hi! I have a new iPad7 purchased a month ago, on which I use GarageBand connecting my electric guitar to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen. audio interface, and this one to the iPad. I can hear myself while playing and/or recording if I use my headphones on the interface or/on the iPad. But I can't hear my guitar without headphones, as the iPad's internal speakers stop working. Even if I activate the “monitor” icon in GarageBand, the iPad doesn't sound. I have tried the two solutions that Apple offers on its website, in the troubleshooting section, in the section "GarageBand for IOS: Audio is not heard when monitoring an external device" I have tried both solutions and the problem remains unsolved. Thanks beforehand

Quick question: what’s the difference in quality between using any of these interfaces vs using the iRig? Are interfaces a better translation of the sound than the iRig?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there. So the iRig is pretty good these days. Probably not quite up to the quality of a dedicated USB interface. The difference is usually the quality of the preamp (less noise) and the converters (again, cleaner conversion).

Does connecting a usb interface to the iphone/ipad, affect its battery life as in long term? Bcz i was totally suspecting that could happen and i went for an interface that could run on battery power too without drawing any energy from the mobile device. Nonetheless i love using these interfaces with my ipad!
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. So yes, interfaces that are designed to use the iPad or iPhone power (like the iRig series) will drain the battery a lot more, and therefore impact short and long term battery life. Using a powered hub or portable battery instead means the iPad/iPhone only needs to power itself which helps the battery life. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍

Hey Pete, loving the content on this channel, thanks! I’m considering between getting the 2020 base model vs 2020 iPad Air. Regarding the lightning connection situation on base model, is the only drawback just the inconvenience of having to use the additional lightning to usb converter? or does it have any other effects on playback sound quality or production performance in general, compared to having a direct usb c connection on the iPad?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Great question my friend. In my experience the only real difference is that you definitely need a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter as opposed to USB-C where you can use pretty much any generic adapters. Once you have the connections converted to USB-A there is no difference in the reliability of the connection or quality of sound through any devices. Hope this helps your decision. studiolivetoday.com/ipad

I have an old version Presonus AudioBox I use. I've never had to use a powered usb hub to power the interface...it's powered on when I provide AC power from the wall, via lightning cable, to the usb 3 camera adapter that's plugged into the ipad...does this not work for the interfaces you've shown here?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Most smaller USB audio interfaces don’t have a separate power socket for A/C power. They are “bus powered” so get both their power and data via USB. You’re correct that if an interface or mixer is separately powered it doesn’t need additional power like this. Probably something I should have mentioned!
@jphb7730
@jphb7730 4 жыл бұрын
Pete Johns my description is a little confusing after I reread it..I'm saying I don't have separate power for the audio interface. I just use the usb camera adapter like the one you show, (I have a cheap version) plugged into the ipad,and plug the interface into it using usb cable, and once I plug a regular lighting cable powered from the wall into the lightning port on the adapter, the interface and my Samson Mic light up and have power.. I was going to buy a powered usb hub but mine works the way I mentioned...am I missing something? I'm not saying you are wrong but wondering why you need a powered usb hub if you are bringing power in to the adapter?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Got it! Yes, there are some interfaces that will work with just the additional power being supplied to the iPad or iPhone via the lightning power input. Another thing I may need to cover in a “part 2”. 👍 It’s always more reliable to use a hub or Powerbank though, as there’s no guarantee which interface will work with which iPad/iPhone.

@PeteJohnsMusic

Hi there. You will need to make sure your interface/mixer is class compliant and you have the genuine Apple Lightning to USB adapter. It can also be difficult to record calls and get just one copy of both sides of the conversation. This is called a “mix minus” if you want t research it more.

Hey so I did everything you recommended using the Focusrite interface but now for some reason when I play my tracks - the beats I’ll be singing to - they sound all distorted. Usually I play them in the background from my iTunes and I also tried importing them to see if that would fix the issue but they sound terrible. When I disconnect everything they sound normal again so I know it’s not the tracks themselves. Any suggestions?? 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Howdy. I’ve replied to this on your other comment asking for a little more information. Where are the sounds you are importing being sourced from? And if you import them and play back are they still sounding distorted by themselves?

@sammodog
@sammodog 3 жыл бұрын
Just started using Scarlett 2i4 yesterday and ran into a similar issue. The order in which you hook up the Scarlett is important. Make sure nothing is plugged into the Scarlett or iPhone. First plug in the iPhone/iPad camera adapter 3 into device and make sure power is connected to it. Then connect the Scarlett to the camera adapter USB port. Make sure phantom power is not on when you connect or you will get a not enough power message. Once connected and powered you can then connect your inputs and use phantom power if needed. These steps need to repeated any time the Scarlett or iPhone/iPad is disconnected. Also, in my case no matter what order I tried (and I’m ocd when it comes to troubleshooting) the Scarlett would not power up properly when connected to a powered usb hub. I’m using a usb 2 Scarlett btw. I’ve read that the 3rd generation may not have drivers installed on the device as 1st and 2nd gen do as well just fyi.

Hi there. You either need to connect a USB mic or an interface and use a standard XLR mic. Unfortunately there is no way to use both in iOS.

Hey there. Not in my experience. It records at 24-bit, 44.1kHz quality with about the same latency as a PC/Mac. All modern (last 5 years) iPad and iPhones have enough processing and memory to handle high resolution audio without any problems at all.

I have an iPhone X. Tried to connect my Behringer UM-2 interface (love it!) to GarageBand. I used a powered USB 4-port USB 3 hub, an Apple Lightning to USB cable (not the wide one). GarageBand let me pick the channel on the interface, and I could see it was getting a signal, but with no headphone out on the phone I couldn't hear it. I tried USB earbuds but as soon as they connected, the UM-2 disconnected. Something I haven't found in the phone only allows one or the other, not both, to be active. So I guess I need to stick with my iRig interface until I get a different phone. Very good video, I like how you showed several interfaces and options. I got very close to making it work!
@mrdave740a
@mrdave740a 4 жыл бұрын
Update: tried again today, it all works now. No bluetooth needed; sound plays from the audio interface into my headphones. Not sure what changed since yesterday, maybe a monitor setting, but sound is very good. Nice to be able to start a GarageBand drummer and play along, using amps and effects in the phone. Also tried connecting an XLR mic and my keyboard (via USB hub) and it worked seamlessly, all at the same time. It's easy to capture ideas now from any source and build into different tracks. So thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Apple took away the headphone jack and been trying to get people to switch to mostly bluetooth devices for audio input on iphone 12. It’s like they don’t want us using wired headsets or soundcards anymore. It’s just the built in mic on the iphone or a bluetooth device.
