If you want to connect any USB mic directly to your camera, here's the quickest and cheapest way to do it.
All you need is one simple cable and a simple trick to pass audio from your USB mic directly to your camera.
The result is amazing high-quality audio directly from your USB mic to your camera.
In this video, I'm using the Yeti USB mic with a GH5, but this works with pretty much any USB mic and camera combination.

Thanks for the video. TECH QUESTION: I bought a Sony ZV-1 last year and have been recording videos using the Rode Wireless Go without issue. I wanted to do more podcast-style videos so I bought the SHURE MV7 (using a 3.5mm jack) but it won't record quality audio without a loud buzzing sound (machine gun-like) (same with Blue Raspberry). Shure support says I need to turn off "Bias Voltage" of the jack on the Sony ZV-1 for the microphone to work properly ("turn off the supply voltage on the microphone input of 3.6V"). Just got off with Sony support and they say you can't do that on their camera. So I guess I have 2 questions: 1) Any workaround for my issue that you're aware of? 2) Do you know if I will have the same issue with the Canon M50? I really want to keep my Shure MV7. Thanks :)

Hi Andrew, My Blue Yeti has different controls knobs one for gain, headphone volume ( plain without lights ) and the pattern ( cardioid etc. ) My question is where do I set the gain control? BTW my set up using the Blue Yeti with a Canon M50 produced a background buzzing called Ground Loop Interferance. I used a Ground Loop Isolator which gives me lovely interference-free audio. Thanks for your great videos.
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Paul, You want to find the dial that adjusts the headphone output. It should be on the front just below the "Blue" logo. The dial on the back is for controlling the audio into your computer, the dial on the front of the type of Yeti you have should be on the front below the mute button. I've used a Ground Loop Isolator before and like you say they really do work and they are cheap too.

@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy Жыл бұрын
You want to make sure you have the mic doing the bulk of the amplification and not the camera as detailed in the video. I would get the mic and camera set up so it’s about -12db and then just boost it a little with your software. It’s always better to be a little on the low side coming out of the camera, if the audio signal is clean and free from hiss you can always increase it in the software. If the audio is too loud out of the camera you risk the audio peaking and then there is nothing you can do to fix that

Hi Andrew - thank you for this video about How To Connect A USB Mic Directly To A Camera. Am I right in assuming that the only mic's this will work with are ones with a headphone out jack as some budget mics only have a USB output. Or would a simple USB -> 3.5mm adapter work? Looking forward to more content and have sub'ed a dinged to😃o.
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, The mic has to be plugged into the computer via USB, so a USB to 3.5mm adaptor won't work. You may (and I've never tried this) be able to plug a 3.5mm cable into your computer and then plug that into the camera. On Macs there is an app called Loop Back that may help, like I say I've never tried this, I've only plugged the 3.5mm into the output on the mic itself.

Amazing sound quality on this video Andrew. In the description you say this is all through the Blue Yeti, when i use a USB mic in a room/studio i get a lot of echo sounds and not as professional sounding as yourself. Do you have special studio set-up to sound so clear?
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy Жыл бұрын
if you are getting a lot of echo it's likely down to the room you are in. Hard flat surfaces don't make for good recording, a room with lots of object, soft objects like sofas, curtains etc will sound better. You can also buy sound blankets from a company called Producers Choice that really do help and drape them over things or hang them up, I personally have acoustic panels that I made and there are lots of videos on KZfaq that show you how, you can also buy them ready made. Also, a mic like the Shure MV7 will sound better in a room with echo because it's got a much shorter pick up pattern - hope this helps

@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
I would try first adjusting the gain on the mic and the headphone audio level, it could be you have the Gail on the mic too high, or the gain on the camera to high. Alternatively it could be an electrical hum, if that’s the case make sure your mic cable is not near electricity cables, try running the camera on battery, if it’s an electrical hum it’s normally a grounding issue, you would need to disconnect electrical items until the hum goes away. Hope this helps.

Without a doubt get a Sony ZVE10 with either a Sigma 16 or 30mm F1.4 lens or the Viltrox 23mm F1.4 and here's why, I'm fortunate to have a couple of Canon C300 cameras and these things are amazing, but a $15k each they should be, I bought a couple of ZVE 10s to fix to my car of a shot, I figured if one falls off it's not a huge deal, fast-forward I no longer can be bothered messing about with the C300 Cine cameras because the quality from little cheap ZVE 10 is just so good and it's easy to work with. In fact the video you've just watched was shot on a $15k C300, take a look at my latest videos these are on the little ZVE10, like this one for example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJ-fq9uordvGhZ8.html . Hiya. I have a canon 2000d. How do i attach an external mix as all the tutorials on youtube say its not possible
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
I've never used a 2000d but I have a feeling that it does not have an external mic input. The only way around this is to record audio on a separate device like a Zoom H4 or H6 and then sync the audio and video when editing the video. The cheap way to sync audio is to clap your hands at the start of the recording and then sync the sound of the clap with your hands coming together. If you're using a program like Premiere Pro to edit you can sync the external audio and the video tracks automatically, providing you also have audio from your cameras internal mic on the video track, Premiere syncs the external audio to match the much poorer quality audio on the video track that is from the built in mic in the 2000d. Hope this helps.

Andrew: I have a Shure MV7, which has separate levels for both headphone and mic. Should both of these be adjusted to the same level? I’m not clear which each is doing, as your demo used a Yeti, which has both headphones/mic combined.
@CourseBuildersAcademy
@CourseBuildersAcademy Жыл бұрын
The MV7 is a great mic and if you want it to sound even better, if you want it to sound like the more expensive SM7B watch this: Shure MV7 vs Yeti USB Mic - The Yeti is Doomed! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7x6paWr17_Icps.html now to answer your question. The level of the mic is adjusting the audio going in, the level of the headphones is going out. So set the mic level as normal and then adjust the headphones level. I normall set the mic about 50 to 70 percent and then use the headphones volume to get it to the right level in the camera. You want the camera to be doing as little of the work as possible. It just a case of testing and adjusting to fine tune it.

Very helpful!. I'm hoping you can help me out. I bought a Sony ZV-1 last year and have been recording videos using the Rode Wireless Go without issue. I wanted to do more podcast-style videos so I bought the SHURE MV7 (using a 3.5mm jack) but it won't record quality audio without a loud buzzing sound (machine gun-like) (same with Blue Raspberry). I tried what you recommended in the video with the same result. Shure support says I need to turn off "Bias Voltage" of the jack on the Sony ZV-1 for the microphone to work properly ("turn off the supply voltage on the microphone input of 3.6V"). Just got off with Sony support and they say you can't do that on their camera. I also get the same machine-gun buzzing sound if I use the Blue Raspberry. Any workaround for my issue that you're aware of? Do you know if I will have the same issue with the Canon M50? I really want to keep my Shure MV7. Thanks :)

Chris, before we go down this rabbit hole, tell me are you doing recording or going live, are you on PC or Mac. There may be a better way to do this. Also, the MV7 did you get the USB or the XLR and USB model? The MV7 is a really nice mic for the money, it sounds almost identical to the more expensive SM7B

@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks for the response. I'm recording for my new YT channel (kzfaq.info). I record on my Sony ZV-1 camera. I have both PC and Mac but do all my video editing on my mac (was using iMovie but recently switched to Final Cut Pro). With the MV7 it has both USB and XLR options. And yeah, I really like the mic and want to find a way to make it work.

@Chris Friesen - sorry for the long-winded reply here, but I thought it better to go into detail... I think given the limitations of the ZV1 being able to isolate supply voltage I wouldn't try to go that route, there's a better way and one that will give you a much more flexible workflow - it's what I and a lot of others use. Rather than record to an SD card in the camera, you record directly to your Mac with both your camera and mic. Here's an high-level overview of how it works: 1. You need either ECamm which is a paid app ( but cheap ), it's easy to use, but works only on Mac, or you use OBS which is free, works on both PC and Mac - but takes a little longer to familiarise yourself with, but it's still pretty easy. 2. You connect the Camera via HDMI to your computer and you plug your mic into your computer via USB. 3. You record directly to your hard drive. I actually record to a little Solid State USB drive because it's really fast and I record in 4k and down-sample when I'm editing. This setup works great because I'm not messing about with SD cards and I can control the recording functions directly from my computer while recording. The slight issue with this setup is the audio and video are going to be slightly out of sync by about 5 frames, but in Ecamm and OBS it's easy to fix, you can offset to correct it. The reason for the sync issue is it takes your camera a fraction of a second longer because it has to encode the video in-camera whereas the audio is captured instantly - but offset works. You can actually align the video and audio in Final Cut if you wanted - this is why Clapper Boards are used, they allow the editor to visually align the snapping shut of the clapper board with the sound, but this is just adding to your workflow. As for the question on the Canon M50 which you asked earlier. I love Canon cameras, they make amazing cameras for photography and I have a few of the C series high-end cinema cameras, but their consumer-level cameras for video are lacking in a few areas, namely the 30-minute recording cutoff, but I think there is an app you can install on your SD card called Sparkocam that gets around that. You could try with your M50 if you have one, but an M50 wouldn't be my personal first choice for this kind of production.

@Chris Friesen, One thing I forgot to mention in the long reply that was in order to connect your camera to your computer via HDMI is you're going to need a converter. I created a guide that covers all the equipment that you may find useful : bit.ly/3DGNOLw

@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks again. That is very helpful. But today I think I fixed it! When I plugged the Shure USB into my Macbook Pro (as opposed to my PC which is plugged into the wall) it worked. So the issue seems to be related to my desktop computer. It works fine when it's plugged into my Macbook. Not sure if the issue will return if I plug my Macbook in but I won't need to given the good batter life. Thank goodness! Thanks for your help!

Can you explain *why* a USB mic needs to be plugged into a computer for power rather than an outlet? What does a computer provide that plain old power doesn't? Also, could I use my Android phone as a computer or do I need to bring my laptop when I record on the go? I didn't realize the mic needed a computer and as a result have zero audio from two of my group's concerts! I'm subbing for our sound guy and thought I'd level up from the built-in camera mic I used before, but if I'd left well enough alone at least I'd have *some* audio. Luckily we're doing all the songs again for future concerts, but there was one that was unique to that performance and we can't record again and I'm sad that I messed that up unknowingly. I didn't find your video until after I was able to check my files. I had the mic plugged into my computer when I first tested it, but that's only because it was the closest USB port. I wish I'd tested it in the wall or a battery pack too, because I would have caught that it was missing audio!

Since you are in effect plugging your mic in to the camera via the headphone port on the mic, it's the headphone volume that you are using to control the audio volume to the camera. The trick is to have to mic doing all the amplification and keep the levels in the camera as low as you can.

My biggest problem with this is that I can't use my pc or a laptop as a power source for the microphone because i make ASMR content and the gain on the microphone has to be higher than normal. The microphone is very sensitive therefore it picks up the awful sounds my pc makes. It's loud and it ruins the whole point of making an ASMR video. ( For context i used to plug the blue yeti on my phone with an adaptor and it worked perfectly but then my phone malfunctioned and it won't pick up the sound from the mic when i film using the phone camera ). So now i need a camera and a way to power the mic. I thought maybe there would be a videocamera with a usb mic input but i can't find any at all.

Well, it may be possible to run the mic into your computer and then plug the headphone output on the computer into your camera. In fact, as I saw your question I was just planning a video that covers the Rode Wireless Go 2 which for the money is an amazing mic ( you can do so much more than connect it to your camera or Phone). I don't, but here's what I would do to try and isolate the source of the hiss. Try a different USB cable, Try running your camera from a battery if you're currently using mains power, turn the audio levels down in the camera, make sure you've not got automatic volume control activated on the camera. I've seen this before on Sony cameras as per this thread: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4491104 which I find odd because it's not a cheap camera.
