How to connect and control a GOTO mount to MacOS computer (Windows too) feat. Sky-Watcher EQM-35 Pro

Mac OS Sky-Watcher mount control is possible with free software KStars EKOS. In this video I show how to connect mount to a computer natively in MacOS (works on Windows too) to be able to do plate solving, precise polar alignment etc.

I would literally pay to see a comprehensive set of videos like this touching base on every step of the process (setting up the Mount through post-process) using a Mac. Just bought some equipment and trying to learn how to use it while I wait for it all to show up. This has been by far the most helpful video, I just need more!! 😬

Perhaps it would be a significantly larger fraction if more people realised it was possible and straightforward without jumping through a blizzard of out-of-date information about drivers and Windows blah blah blah they haven't thought about for 20 years since they made the move to a more sensible platform. Just a thought ;)

I've been using a star adventurer exclusively, but last night I tuned up my unused Celestron AVX (that I've had for two years) to remove backlash. I was just about to look into how to connect my mount up!

Thank you so much for this video...while I typically use a scope mounted windows machine to connect to my AP setup...and remote into the windows box through my mac. I also do visual observing I was looking for an option for scope control and just a mac. (I really don't want to buy a skyfi or an ASIAir) Your video is a perfect, I was able to get everything up and running before the end of your video. Just to clarify, put the headset controller in pc direct mode before plugging into the MacBook...order of connecting things mattered for me (and it took a while to figure that out) otherwise great video, Thanks.

Do you still have to polar align using the polarscope before you can use kstars. I am a Mac user & have a HEQ5 pro but have no software or hardware (like an ASI Air) that can plate solve? How does kstars/ekos know where you are & where you pointing without any sort of alignment routine?

You can plate solve in EKOS without AsiAir. And yeah polar alignment is always a must, otherwise the mount just can’t do it’s job. But you can PA very roughly and then fine tune it in EKOS

Kamil, how long can a usb to serial cable be? The reason I ask is I'd like to be able to run one from a room in my house out to the Synscan. Could it be up to, say, 30 metres?

Good video, but does not work.I have installed the Prolific serial driver, connected a USB to serial adapter (the Mac system report says it is connected), connected the serial adapter to the multi-purpose port on the SynScan hand controller with the RJ-12 to D-Sub 9 cable (that came with the scope, and as per the scope instruction manual), set PC-direct mode on the hand controller, and selected the SkyWatcher Synscan and Canon DSLR in the device profile. It then refuses to connect. I must be doing something wrong, or missed something. Any ideas out there?!

Try as I might I am getting crashed kstars every time. After multiple attempts I still am unable to connect. Using Skywatcher 300 Dob goto. Totally stuck. When I click on the go icon in EKOS I get told Indi is running and nothing happens. In setup I select Skywatcher Synscan. I downloaded the drivers. I added a Nikon DSLR to my profile to allow me to proceed. Any advice? Thanks FYI I am using MacBook M1 Air with Sonoma 14.5

WOW!!, really useful!! If I can make a question is how can I join the dove tail to your lense ring. I’m trying to do that, indeed I’ve got that mount and my 100-400 from Sigma with my Arca Swiss lens ring. I have to be really stupid, because can’t imagine how to join to a telescope mount, even when I’ve got a green dove tail like yours... thanks in advance and waiting for the next of these video series.

Nope. When you use plate-solving you don’t need to do 2/3-star alignment

It’s a computer routine that takes an image and figures out when the scope is actually pointed by identifying unique star patterns in the image

Hi, thanks for your time and videos. Coming from star tracker to eqm35 , did you find such a big differences in term of stability ? And how do you attach your lens collar to milano, are you using some extra stuff? Regards

Yeah it’s much much beefer and more stable. A camera with a 135mm lens is almost too light for it (hard to balance with one counterweight up top). But the best thing about a mount like this is the ability to control it via computer, do plate solving, PA, dual axis guiding and dithering etc. I am using an arcaswiss clamp screwed onto the dovetail

Was going to buy a PC 😢 as I thought all Astro s/w was Windoze. I have a MacBook Pro and iMac Pro 5K from church music we are retiring from. Maybe I should keep them!

Well while it is possible to do some stuff on a Mac then in the long run Windows is a way to go indeed. I eventually got myself a mini Windows PC from aliexpress that is attqched to my telescope and it’s a dream setup

No, not electronically since it only moves on one axis.

@@ralphguppy hi, after a few weeks I downloaded the latest build and it magically started working! it has some issues and I have to restart kstars a lot just to make it see my camera or get rid of some glitches, but overall - it's working

I keep getting [ERROR] Failed to connect to port (/dev/cu.usbserial). Error: Port failure Error: No such file or directory. Check if device is connected to this port. , anyone knows how to solve this?

Make sure you have Prolific drivers installed

@@kamilkp I get the same error, and I've installed the drivers. I know you aren't here to solve my problems, just letting you know that it's a common error, even with the drivers installed and enabled (in the new security features of Apple OS 10. 4 Monterey). I'm using a MacBook that no longer has traditional USB ports, so I have to use a USB A to USB C adapter. Is there a serial to thunderbolt./USBC driver?
