O. M. G......!!!! You are such a lifesaver! I have searched KZfaq for over a month and I was even on the phone with Apple customer service at least three different times for hours on in with no results. I was on my way back to Apple to return my Book Arc today and decided to watch maybe one more video then that's when I came across your video that shows and explains how to connect the MacBook Pro to any monitor with the laptop closed in clamshell-style and TADA!!!!! The only thing that I had left to do after getting the HDMI cable and the USBC extender which I already had was to plug in the charger and keep it plugged in which I was not doing that because I didn't know I had to but thanks to you everything is working now with the laptop closed sitting docked in my Book Arc that I now can keep!!! I'm so excited!!!!! Thank You So Very Much!!!🙏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽😉

Straight, no chaser. You DO need to plug in the power cord (he told me, I skipped it, my bad). Let's hope the algorithm rewards him instead of incenting him to make a 20 minute video next time (like so many other KZfaqrs).

Caution on what adapter you are using for clamshell mode. If you are connecting to a monitor and want it to wake after the laptop has been put into sleep mode or has timed out that the monitor is in sleep mode, I've found one that doesn't work. It's the Santechi Type-C Multi-Port Adapter 4K with Ethernet V2. I ended up buying the Apple USB-C Digital Multiport Adapter. This one works fine. Jd

one note on overheating: if you feel your computer is warm to the touch, it is still well within operational temperature, which goes all the way up to 95°C (cpu & vrms) on MacBooks. Average daily activities like web browsing and reading emails barely put any load on the cpu, however if the MacBook is closed it does tend to struggle to cool off a little bit more than it does when its open. Still, before you'll reach any 'dangerous' temperature', your MacBook will throttle down its processor so to produce less heat. You really don't need to worry about it even if it gets warm to the touch, and should it ever reach very high temperatures, I'll sort itself out

If the monitor (LG for example) has a USB C port, you can connect from monitor to laptop and you don’t need the charger to enter clamshell mode (the monitor will charge via usb c connection to the monitor)

Great informative video. One main question. How do you power down and wake up the mac? If it is in clamshell mode on a vertical stand, then how do you start the computer? Just turn on the monitor or ? Similarly for shutdown? Do you switch off charging so it goes into Sleep mode? And then start the charger again to wake up the monitor?

Yes completely powering down caught me by surprise too. I just open it up, turn it on, put it to sleep, and plug Monitor back in. It’s simple, works every time, and asleep works so so well. Keep in mind when in clamshell mode it’s best to get an external mic and camera. The Mac keyboard with idea works really really well. (but will not power up in clamshell mode, sleep man, use sleep).
