@@jackspade2576 If somebody was to use a rotary tool or metal snake on this afterwards, and it pierces the rubber boot connection, this all has to be ripped back out. Get the ARC band or "hard inner sheath" coupler like you say. They should have used a powered auger to loosen up the debris. As others have said, it could have been done from the beginning of the video. Replacing intact metal pipe with a rubber boot is asking for disaster.

Great work. I am trying to connect a 2" OD iron drain pipe to the p-trap pipe that will attach to a garbage disposal. My question is, if I buy a coupling tube, how much play can there be when the coupler attaches to the pipe? I am see ing about an 1/8" on either side of the couplers? Is that too much? Will the coupler squeeze enough so there won't be a leak? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

when you buy a coupling you need to be able to attach it to your iron pipe. The better is to have them tight so you can tighten the ring to avoid any leaks in the future. I hope it will help

Use the tools you have, but snaking that drain with a rotary tool would have been a better choice for cleaning it out. Some places have code that says the primer has to stick out at least an inch along the exposed sections of pipes (more in some jurisdictions). That flexible nut driver was really cool to see in action though! Nice job showing enough of the project to make the whole thing approachable while staying focused on what I came here for. Thanks

Since comment is two years old, I’m assuming problem solved. For anyone searching for an answer, here’s what I learned. First, double check your pipe diameter calculation. I thought I needed 4.5 inch CI. Realized my circumference measurement was off causing overstated diameter. While my pipes were slightly larger than 4”, it was a nominal amount and the rubber sleeve fit fine. Other tip is to make sure to clean the outside of CI pipe. Sand away/remove any rust or grime from the coupler seating areas. Lastly make sure you use plenty support straps to keep your pipes in place. When you make your first cut through, any existing torque will be released. You don’t want your piping system bouncing around causing further cracking or torquing.

Hmmmm....I have done exactly that twice to replace a 4" iron elbow. Both times the soil chemistry makes the flexible coupling extremely stiff so the stainless steel ring clamps are not applying friction. Then natural soil movements pull the repair apart.
@bigtridentguy
@bigtridentguy Ай бұрын
The shielded version of couplers solve for that. Instead of a rubber sleeve and two hose clamps alone, they also come with stainless steel “shields” that cover the rubber sleeve making it rigid. The added strength keeps your pipes aligned and doesn’t require a soil backfill. It also deters rodents from chewing up the rubber.

I'm an old man with old man hands, arthritis, etc. I use a nut driver, not a wrench, and tighten it up as snug as I can get it, then wait and do it again in 20 or so minutes after the rubber and the drive band get "cozy". For stuff that gets buried I prefer the couplings with the stainless steel shields, e.g. a Fernco Proflex. There is an 8mm t-handle torque wrench, or 5/16" depending on the brand of coupler, to use with these fittings, I just use a nut driver. If the fittings are hard to get on you can wet them or use a non-petroleum lube, O-ring lube for example. I am not a pro but have never had a fitting leak and have been doing my own DIY repairs 50 years.

Yes it is possible. And once you have over tightened it, such as with a power tool, it will strip and never tighten properly again and must be replaced. Otherwise IT WILL leak. It is best to hand tighten as demonstrated in the video. And, as the author advised above, stop tightening when you feel it is enough, because even then some of us can over tightened it. GOOD PLUMBING!

@@LoneTinaja It has a complete stainless sheet /cylinder jacket around the rubber. The two stainless ring clamps are typically riveted to the stainless sheet / jacket. Underground at my house a licensed plumber used Fernco rubber couplers 4 inches in diameter with stainless steel clamps but the rubber is not surrounded by a stainless steel jacket. Do you know how long the rubber will last before it deteriorates to the point that it fails? Are there chemicals in soil that eat away at the rubber? Is it also an issue of soil shifting because of rain that makes soil expand, then soil shrinks during periods of drought? Do those processes cause the soil to abrade the rubber or tear the rubber?

The fastest I've found is to use a grinder w/a continuous rim diamond blade. No shaking of the pipes upstream that might initiate a leak at the next hub, and..... it cuts fast! Also, less chance of unwanted shattering/breaking of the cast iron you are trying to keep. Absolute control with the diamond blade for a clean, straight, end-cut; if it's not perfect, the diamond blade can trim/grind the merest amount off to make it right. If necessary, and if you are unable to get to the backside of a pipe to make the cut, cut a section out on the front side big enough to get the grinder inside the pipe to continue cutting. Absolutely wear gloves, hearing and eye protection, and a respirator. I showed this trick to my plumber years ago- he'd never heard/seen it done this way; went out immediately afterwards to get some diamond blades...... lol. YMMV

U can tell he’s a total noob, Ryobi tools, purple primer and buried ferncos lol the path to disaster, this would fail inspection, no worries more work for real plumbers. On to the next job to tie in some slinky drains and shark bites! Big box stores sell all type of crap doesn’t mean u should use it.

@@CreativeProcessDIY sorry friend don’t know what country your in but comment is correct the coupling you used has to be protected from rocks debris. There are ones made here in America that have metal sleeves over both ends . It is torqued down with specific lbs on the brackets. Let say a person backfills your hole with fill that has a rock of small foreign object of if it’s filled with draining gravel. Your rubber unprotected fitting can easily be torn or pierced. The metal clad hubs are made specifically to protect the connection…..it’s ok you tried to do better….be open to crisis by professional plummers. It’s not good to pass wrong info that can cause complex trouble. Don’t mind what’s on a little label. Look at the building/ plumbing code that’s shat guides us her in YSA…
