I have received the crank shaft back from www.southsideen... STD/0.040 its time to put it back in the engine and connect the connecting rods to the crank.
The parts from www.rockauto.co... and www.autoone.co... have arrived in record time and on budget progress is going well.
This is real back yard mechanics.
All the mechanical repairs and services I do are done in our back yard.
So join me on my mechanical adventures so you have the confidence to have your own.

i always use stp mixed with 30 weight oil for my assembly lube! i have done that for nearly 40 years of auto and small engines repair/rebuild! without the locking tab the bearings will spin freely and cease a bearing like a spun bearing in a blown motor!

STP is what? I have heard of it but its mostly unknown here in Australia. I have used a product called motor honey all my life this is the first time I have not used it as its in available now. I presume since this product is made for the sole purpose of assembly it will do the job. I always prime the system with oil before cranking it the first time. I have done some research on the tab less bearings and found my concerns unfounded. Apparently in the future all bearings will be without tabs. The bearing shells I have removed from the engine had spun quite severely and they had tabs? So it seems it does not stop the problem. Apparently the alloy the bearings are made from is so soft that as soon as they get hot and stick to the crank due to lack of oil the tabs shear off. They now make the bearing shells a touch longer so that they get crushed against the outer wall. This also improves temperature transfer and keeps the bearing cooler I hope they are right :-) Regards Rik

stp is a american oil burning additive that is thick and sticky much like the motor honey you use.

Ahhh ok. Apparently I have been told the stuff I'm using out performs the motor honey especially if your not working on the engine for a long time.

Non locking tab bearings are 'A Series' (Aluminum) Clevite CB-1854A . The bearings with tabs are 'P Series' (Tri-Metal) Clevite CB-1784P. My research hasn't shown why one would be preferred over the other, but if you are like me and doing a bearing swap in a hurry, order one of each. Return the one you don't use. I used the Clevite part numbers to provide something for others to search by. On a side note: Caterpillar LEC (3500 / 3600) engines are assembled at the factory with STP oil treatment used as an assembly lube. I worked there.

Can you re use the main bearing cap bolts

Yes you can if they have not been stretched as per factory manual. The way it tells you to check is with a straight edge. You line up the straight edge along the thread's and if there is no space in the middle between the thread's and the straight edge they can be re used. If there is space between the two they need to be replaced. So if the threaded section is thinner in the middle they need to be replaced. The same goes for the head bolts. They can be used a second time but not recommended to use a third time. Ideally replacing them always but the budget does not always allow you to replace them. Regards Rik
