On this episode of Wired Tight, we chase our local GMRS repeater and officially reveal our GMRS call sign! After many frustrating attempts, a trip into town and a last ditch effort on CHIRP we successfully made contact to the repeater over 13 miles away with the Baofeng UV5R and an Abbree Tacticool folding antennae!

Oddly enough the zello channel gmrs nationwide is a great way to get your feet wet with gmrs. You come with your call sign and learn pretty much everything there is to know about gmrs etiquette. It's not true analog but it's connected to gmrs repeaters so gmrs etiquette is observed at all times. It's much easier than getting in the car and hunting down a repeater.

@@TRUMP_WAS_RIGHT_ABOUT_EVRYTHNG good call. I suspect real CB is probably more mature. Still some foul language but it's among truckers in close range of each other who are mostly dealing with road conditions and keeping each other awake. Anyways if you want a CB check out the quansheng uvk5 with a modded firmware and an antenna adapter. It's a ham radio but it's hackable to CB channels at least for RX

When i first started watching the first thing i said to myself about the connections to the repeater was after you release the ptt was wheres the repeaters connections tone/bleep/ or a key up sound like if you ptt hold it it and release it dose that wosh sound. I knew it wasn't setup right because every repeater responses a what i call it a ptt connectivity reply to let the user know they good. Also your chirp has pre configuration of ch/rp in the program the same way the ham dose with your local ham rp base on your location. But future reference write down the info after u use chirp to program because i notice when i did gmr then did ham it erase my gmr and replace it with the ham so i had to manually do all with the chirp instead of doin the already program in chirp so i did research and made a handy emergency/hobby radio. Got all uhf,murs,frs,gmrs,gmrs repeaters including got the 8w on the 50w max gmrs ch since you gotta watch out for those power restriction lol and then also put sum 2band 10band 60ban and local ham repeaters and sum marine and air space towers but set them to non scan including sum noaa weather. Good choice on antenna but me personally since im a bike and wear a back pack i installed/permanent a duel band car antenna shorty for better fars and then got for the house a gmrs only 6ft and works flawlessly. Did sum testing and with the shorty duel way better then the stock and with the 6ft way better then shorty and i think i hit about 20miles not sure but i do know when i was on a repeater me and this guy on Thanksgiving switch off and went on regular radio to radio and we was fine didnt notice a difference and we was about 12 miles apart untill i put the stock didnt get nothing. Anyhow great radio. Also they just came out with a only gmrs baofeng radio called the uv-5g plus check that out.

@Stingray8854
@Stingray8854 3 ай бұрын
The UV-5R has a GMRS version. From what I understand (and I’m certainly no expert) it’s repeater capable and it is both GMRS and amateur / ham. That’s why I bought the two pack. So to your question specifically, I think the original UV-5R is a ham / amateur radio that is not approved to transmit on the GMRS channels. I believe the UV-5G is the other way around. It’s a GMRS radio and either not capable or not approved for the ham frequencies. But as I mentioned, I’m no expert. Learning the ropes myself.

That's also a great point. I haven't bothered to change my transmit power or bandwidth because several old dudes in the area also use the UV5R and the UV9G and even non feng dudes have all said we have great sounding transmissions so in my area at least, nobody really cares. I can hit several GMRS repeaters around 20 miles away with an HT from inside my house. But I do have a resonant antenna for 462mhz. You will do a lot better with the correct antenna for GMRS. The ham radio license is so easy to get even 7 year old kids have taken a 1 day class and gone from no license to Extra. You don't need to know anything now, they publish the answers to the exam. Also no one wants anyone on their repeater without a license. It is not sad ham stuff, they can loose their license if they allow it.

Knowing what I know about law this is very hard for me to swallow. The 1st amendment protects us from gov over reach on this matter. The way law works is if you get a license you give up your right for the privilege. However, if one wants to participate in the gmrs or ham community they must sacrifice that right. It's very sad.

GMRS is usually dead where I'm from, I might happen to hear someone be talking for a few and that's it. I ended up talking to a couple tow truck driver's to respond back and a kid that most likely talking to his mother, my guess that they were up a few blocks away by the park. The baofeng UV-5R is a neat radio but not a whole lot of power and I learn not to expect alot from it unless using the radio with a friend who lives a mile or so down the road.
@wiredtight
@wiredtight Жыл бұрын
That's actually a very good point that I'm probably going to address in a video coming up about repeaters. I only have two GMRS repeaters in range of me and only one of them is ever active, so I'm lucky in the sense that I do have a pretty active group of GMRS people to talk to in my AO. Since I don't have my Ham license yet and GMRS repeaters are not linked like ham repeaters are, I can only talk to people in a 35 mi radius of the repeater of which I am 15 mi from already. I can't reach out and talk to anybody much further, unless I got a radio with a higher transmit power like you were saying. Hopefully then I could possibly reach Oklahoma City.
@yogidemis8513
@yogidemis8513 Жыл бұрын
The closest repeater for GMRS is about 12 miles south, way to far for the Baofeng to pick up. I might upgrade to the 50w GMRS radio and a good antenna and see if that will improve finding people to to reply back. I was thinking about going back to CB radio but the Top Dawgs out there are pushing massive wattage and overriding the smaller people's airwaves. My uncle is into Ham and he's trying to get me hooked but I'm not into it as much as GMRS or CB. Maybe down the road I'll hook up my own repeater so there's at least one in my city people can use. As always, all the best!
@wiredtight
@wiredtight Жыл бұрын
@@yogidemis8513 I view having your HAM license as a force multiplier. Get that knowledge, get the call sign and start making contacts that way in any SHTF situation you're plugged in and good to go! Other hams know you, you're not a nameless transmission in the void. If you are running a UV5R though, and you can't make contact at 12 miles, it may be obstacles or an antennae issue. I hit my repeater at 15 miles clear as day with an "8 watt" (probably closer to 5) UV5R and an Abbree folding antennae.
@bulldogbrower6732

@@yogidemis8513 12 miles is reasonable for the Baofeng to reach. That is if you are standing outside a car. If you are in a car, plug in a magnetic roof antenna. In the house use a external antenna. Radio to radio on simplex your Baofeng should reach 4-5 miles. The repeaters height makes the difference. 12-20 miles should be no problem.

Yah. But they were trying to receive, so wanted o attenuate the signal so they can kinda zoom in on it. Maybe nevermind.

Walking in circles while you transmist is bad practice. The difference between facing a repeater and turning away can cause your signal to drop out. face the repeater and keep facing (when possible).

holy $hit! you weren't kidding about the fcc gmrs licensing website LOL my god i have never seen such a bloated and terrible user interface in my life! Like everything our $hitty gvt does it's confusing and not consumer friendly. Why would they not just have a f**king clickable link that says GMRS LICENSE APPLICATION click here LOL #wtf on the uv5r and the wonky connections to repeaters , i had similar bugs with my two radios. input the correct information and it wasn't hearing / connecting to the several repeaters i have locally. come to find out the UV5R was glitching on me and would either not save the PL tone or completely change it from what i had input. i haven't heard a damn thing on my baofengs in months other than the stupid robot noaa. My sdr however is picking up tons of stuff. great video brother, thanks for showing the leg work in order to connect LOL

Baofeng UV5R is a hand held ham radio, not GMRS (GMRS needs a $35 license good for 10 years, but you don't have to take a test). You need a ham operator license for this version of Baofeng UV5R. Do NOT buy unless you have a ham operator license. The FCC does crack down on people who do not have a license with exorbitant fines.

The FCC has never, not even once, cracked down on someone using a uv5r for gmrs in the history of the world. In fact they don’t do anything unless you are causing interference to a business, jamming signals, or running pirate radio stations. Feel free to provide any facts to back up your statement.
