42:50 this lesson is worth years of understanding art. I was even telling my gf the other day that my goal isn't to draw photorealism. To me that's something you can just use a camera. Sure it's a skill that needs to be mastered, but what drives my love for art is what it means to me, what it means to whom the drawing is for. What made Rembrandt a master is the fact that you can see the psychology in the facial features, the purpose in why someone is rendered a certain way, the meaning in the apparel worn in the canvas. When you can captivate your viewer, even yourself, to focus on these particular gestures, then meaning can go from a puddle to an ocean from the impression that is has put in context.

I like the egg form for the demonstratrion figure at 27:17 for a couple reasons. First, it's a straight on shot with our eye level roughly the same as the figures, creating an overall oval shape to the head mass. The light direction produces a 3/4 Rembrandt style shadow effect, and int this case Egg lighting seems to fit the figure well. Box forms I would guess come in more handy when the shot is a 3/4 or from a higher or lower angle and one could maybe use the box to help solve perspective problems and deal with lighting when multiple planes of the head are visible? The cylinder also seems appropriate moreso for figures that are turned away from the viewer in some way, and maybe it helps capture wrapping forms like the mouth or browline.

Absolutely phenomenal lesson! I can't tell you how long I've had trouble with lighting, I thought I had all the variables and I just couldn't figure out why everything always seemed just a tad off. This is the biggest click moment I've had with art since learning about shape language and I am over the moon! Thank you so much for releasing something like this for free!

Your drawing is noticeably BETTER than the photo reference, which is often the case and the point of fine Art, the girl looks more...innocent & pure in your interpretation of her. photography tends to be TOO sharp especially nowadays there is something about drawings...simplicity that makes an image more subtle &...dreamlike giving it the advantage, not being able to precisely copy a photograph IS the advantage often.

Boris Vallejo (a suburb & original fantasy Artist) says that it's the ILLUSION of a 3d look to aim for in painting/illustrating in his Art technique book, As for hair/fur to me it's okay to take time to...describe it's texture but ONLY at the advanced stages of drawing/painting, & provided you know how, it can be done. With this CARRAVAGIO type lighting I find it best to start with the darkest value first, & keep comparing one tone with another

Butterfly lighting is front and above not directly above. You shouldn't have dark eye sockets just a small butterfly shaped shadow under the nose. It's very flattering and used a lot in fashion.

What artists tend to do when drawing faces (especially from photographs) is to separate say the eye iris from the white of the ball more than it looks in a photo, I notice you've done this here which is an enhancement all part of improving on a photo (& some say using photographs, is cheating i would disagree.
