This project has been one of my favorites so far. When I first saw this concept, I was a little overwhelmed. I thought it was magic, and that anyone that could convert an internal combustion engine to work on steam had to be a genius. However, by the time I had enough projects under my belt to have the confidence enough to try it I found it to be simple.
I need to say this upfront. This project used steam under pressure; therefore there is an element of danger to this. Steam engines cannot be safely run unattended. If you are going to build this or any other steam project you must use some uncommon sense and work carefully.
Now that the safety issue has been broached, I will address the question my wife, mother, and coworkers that think I am crazy have asked repeatedly. That question is "WHY".
Well, the most obvious answer is I think it is cool, but what I tell my wife is that a steam engine gives me a redundant power source that does not need oil based fuel. I can go out and cut wood and convert wood into electricity. While this is not as efficient as a purpose built steam engine and boiler or a wood gas system it is much cheaper and simpler to build.
To make this project you need three components: a boiler, an engine, and a generator. We will cover the boiler and generator in later posts.

Hey man found your channel today liked and subscribed after finding this very helpful video you made 11 years ago. I was pleased to see you still making video so writing to say thank you and that I am wanting to do this with a regular 2 stroke gas powered generator seeing as this one has finally died on me. Also wondering if you would consider making an update on this idea of using a pressure cooker and reclaimed equipment to generate some useful power? I've been searching and your clear easy to understand presentation has been best so far ❤

It seems like you might be able to tune it by changing the tension of the spring in the check valve, it would be awesome to make a solenoid version that works like fuel injection with an ecu.

They get smashed over time. Literally smashed flat. Their is a part you can buy online with a magnet sensor that will push it open when the piston is in place. You can run it off a battery or get a little alternator to power it like a car.

Great little conversion. Are you going to produce electricity? Regardless of what you power with it - you can pipe the exhaust steam through a radiator with a fan and heat your work area or home. Then it does not matter how efficient the steam engine is - you will be using 90% + of your energy. Be Careful with that BOILER. they can kill (and cook you) in an instant ! !

So how do you convert a Ford 302 to run on steam? Seems to me that you would need to change the cam timing so that the valves would open every stroke. (IE: No compression stroke.) High pressure steam in thru the intake, out the exhaust. The engine turns. But I figure I'm missing something somewhere.

@patrickbrasil7465
@patrickbrasil7465 3 жыл бұрын
The intake on this particular engine goes into the crankcase and then through the transfer ports into the cylinder and since the exhaust port is higher up than the transfer the steam won't be heading out the intake until after exhaust happens which is probably helping to relieve any left over pressure before the Piston starts going back up

Tsog Ayurzana The increased backpressure would reduce the difference between input and output pressure, which would reduce the power. Some steam engines do catch the steam coming out - but only to condense the water to be put back into the boiler to make more steam (that way you don't have to carry as much water in a tank)

@jonnyrox116
@jonnyrox116 6 жыл бұрын
Yves Baggi no npt matches the threads of a spark plug, he just threaded the nipple into the soft aluminum and cut his own threads! That's the least of his problems, lack of lubrication is the reason these conversions get put away in boxes and collect dust, that and the fact that steam is highly corrosive and plays hell with aluminum.
@ppger44
@ppger44 9 жыл бұрын
Great video, but, why are you concerned about a heavier metal flywheel on an aluminum engine? Just use a stand with half moon shaped polycarbonate plastic, like snowmobiles on the rubber drive belt to support the shaft for the extra weight. I believe the older steam engines used lead or brass to support the shaft, but, constantly needed oiled.

@amanofmanyparts9120 4 жыл бұрын
Not using this method with a single cylinder engine. The cylinder would be full of pressurised steam as it tries to come up and it will stop. It probably wouldn't work on a multi cylinder engine as the inlet valves usually open well before TDC, stalling the engine. Although giving it a good push to start it might.

I never did the math on horsepower, but steam does have a lot of torque. It was very strong as a motor, stronger than my ability to mount it securely. But like I said, these don't run more than a couple times on straight steam before it seizes up and rusts and I never figured out a good oiling system. If you do, PLEASE tell me, because I think this is an awesome idea.

You are probably right as he is using a plastic pen as a direct one-to-one mechanical link between the piston and his check valve. So he will have an alternator instead of a DC generator. He could attach an old ratchet handle to it somehow so the oscillations are converted into DC. Unless the intake valve and exhaust valve can be solidly coordinated with the check valve, he'll have to figure out how to turn those oscillations into a spinning motion through a ratcheting mechanism. I am not sure you can attach a flywheel to this configuration as it would add engine vibration without really an payback as in taking the engine past a stick point under torque. My solution would be to reroute some of the steam through the intake port and make the stem on his check valve thingy tighter so not as much steam pumps in through the spark plug port, so the engine now is slightly out of equilibrium and less likely to find an oscillation point between steam intake and steam exhaust and with that configuration, now a flywheel might be helpful.

The problem is, you have to stop the inflow of air on the upstroke. And have a serious flywheel. You need some sort of valve.
@elhigh
@elhigh 9 жыл бұрын
William Mullaney No, you don't have to stop the inflow. The engine's own inertia rolls it past TDC in spite of the incoming pressure. If you roll the engine backwards, it well work equally well backwards. This kind of air or steam motor seems a little counterintuitive but they work very well, particularly at high speeds. Google "Air Hogs," pneumatic toys from the early 90s, they used a motor like this. Its simplicity is what made it possible to make an affordable toy with a pneumatic motor. Cool stuff.
@turtlemann14
@turtlemann14 9 жыл бұрын
elhigh hate to tell you but air hogs have a valve that opens with the piston is at tdc, take a closer look. he has the same valve in his motor in the video. if you put equal amounts of force on both-sides of a wall the wall will not move.
@elhigh
@elhigh 9 жыл бұрын
jon spon I don't know which Air Hogs toy to which you refer, I can only tell you about the one I looked at. There was a little pin on top of the piston that poked the ball up. That was the entirety of the valve system. It worked great. Your wall analogy is specious. It disregards the dynamic state of the system in question.
